I understand that force sensitive - master is how strong one is in the force (correct me if i am wrong even if this isn't the topic) but i don't understand what you mean by "Previous rank", i do however have 2 theories:
1) If i played a character that reached say Acolyte then i would have unlocked that rank for future characters
2) If i don't want to spend years on each rank i better choose a higher rank, thus making it easier (or quicker) to "rank up"
If i am totally wrong please elaborate

I'm assuming you're asking about the Sith template, since if I recall correctly, that's the only one that has previous rank on it.
In our site timeline, the Sith Order has only been around for about 2 years. This means that unlike, say, Jedi, there's no character who has trained to be a Sith since childhood. So any character in the Sith Order has to have come from somewhere else, and probably received some kind of training elsewhere. Or they could have come to the Sith Order completely untrained, but that's another story.
So previous rank refers to what they were before they joined the Sith. For example, my own Sith character was original part of the Jedi Order, but she left while still a padawan. So her previous faction and rank are Jedi and padawan.
