Planet Name: Sola Ventus
Planet Type: Tidally locked, terrestrial
Habitable: Yes
System: Located in the Solitarius System (near the middle of E6 on the map)
Terrain Overview: Thanks to a tidally locked status, one side of Sola Ventus is perpetually facing the sun, where as the other side is always facing empty space. The sun-side isn't really much to look at, having long ago been reduced to a an arid desert, almost completely devoid of any life. The night-side, in stark contrast, is a rather privy to an explosive array of rivers, glaciers, and canyons. Thanks to the unique climate, air from the hot side is constantly blowing over to the cold side, creating near constant storms. Wherever the rain falls long enough, glaciers build up, only to melt again from the desert winds from the other side of the planet.
Notable Geographic Features:
The Sunset Ocean - One of the only constant bodies of water on the entire planet, the aptly named Sunset Ocean is, well, an ocean. Specifically, its an ocean that rings around the narrow band in which the sun would always on the horizon. Once you get past the near constant hurricanes, the weather's actually pretty consistently temperate. The sunset's pretty lovely too. Oh, and it should be noted that most of the planet's life originated from here. To the current date, it continues to explode with native life.
Pluvia Glacier - This monolithic glacier is more or less the closest thing Sola Ventus will ever get a Mount Everest. As a large chunk of ice located at the very furthest point from the Sola's sun, the Pluvia Glacier is the coldest and wettest spot on the planet, subject to almost literally an endless torrent of rain. Because rain tends to erode ice, the nearby land is always inn a flux of ever changing rivers, lakes, and sometimes even oceans. Eventually, through an elaborate series of changes, the water is inevitably cycled back to the base of the glacier, where it freezes. This keeps the entire thing about the same height, though it is theorized to eventually melt. It'll take a while, though.
Capital City: Castilli - This city is built to last. Unlike so many of the cities that have proceeded it, Castilli was built to withstand. Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing is dedicated to architectural beauty, nor was it intended to be. All the designs of all the building were only to withstand the constant storms of the space-side. And yet, almost ironically, the city does achieve a sort of alien landscape that isn't altogether harsh on the eyes. The buildings look almost crystalline, and every large building looks like some variation of a pyramid. Culturally, the city is the seat of the government and a mecca of philosophy the world over. All the greatest native thinkers of the day, as well as the great scientists and inventors. In fact, the crime rate isn't even really that high. All the police really has to deal with is the cult of phosphorescence.
Location wise, the city sits located in a rather large canyon, to help minimize the effects of the wind. To prevent floods, the entire area is lined with a plethora of rather complex sewers and aqueducts running throughout the entirety of it all. For good measure, both ends of the canyon have a series of dams and levees that some might considered paranoid. Earthquakes have even been taken into account, seeing as how the walls of the canyon have actually been braced up beyond necessary. Nothing short of an orbital death raining from above would dislodge the city. Heck, even that would take a while.
In addition, a great deal of the city actually lies underground. Well, the expansions do anyways. See, because it was in a canyon, and because the only thing up were storms and more storms, the architects ran into a bit of a problem. They couldn't build out, and they couldn't build up, sooooo, well, they built down of course! Actually, a great deal of the factories of the city, such as space fleet production and the ilk, lie in this region, with plenty of tunnels large enough to support the taking off and landings of said ships
Major cities: Unfortunately, Castilli is the only city that actually qualifies as a city. Every other organization of the natives is strictly in nomadic tribes. That being said, the culture has not suffered from this. Although, there was an older city, one built to challenge nature itself. Referred to as Tenebris, it eventually collapsed and was lost to history. Rumors exist abound that it was a city of sin, with leaders strongly linked to the dark side of the force.
Sentient species: Caerellions
Non-Sentient species of note:
The Ultrices - A species of vast, flying jellyfish like creatures. A full grown Ultrice is roughly comparable in size to an average house, though they tend to be built like a dinner plate - wide but flat and thin. Curiously enough, they seem to subsist entirely on electricity given off by the lightning storms on the space-side. They tend to be carefree and docile, and thanks to asexual reproduction, they reproduce faster than they're killed, meaning they have no need for methods of self-defense. The natives tend to use them as domestic herds.
Tapisteshar - This rather exotically named being is perhaps one of the biggest threats on the space-side of Sola Ventus. In regards to appearance, it looks vaguely like a manta ray with legs like a mantis. In regards to behavior, they're an apex predator, fearing nothing and hunting everything. A full grown Tapisteshar can grow up to a square meter in dimensions. Not terribly threatening on their own, they tend to hunt in pack of 11-43, making a swarm a very dangerous thing. Thanks to their thin build, they can glide on storm winds, and their teeth are sharp enough to gnaw through stone, if they wanted to. Many a nomad tribe have found their end as Tapis-food.
Brulunt - The sole species of creature living on the sun-side of the planet, Brulunts look somethinglike a enormous snake with three tails. Oddly enough, they seem to be able to thrive solely off photo-synthesis, and almost rarely move. Well, until something gets close to them. According to local legend, there was once a thriving eco-system on the sun-side, only to have it be completely devoured by the Brulents once they were able to grow large. The myth is probably based off the fact that they attack anything that moves. Even each other. No one is quite sure what mating season looks like, but quite frankly, no one would probably survive it either.
History: The history of Sola Ventus in galactic affairs started off as more or less an accident. Despite the native's rather intellectual pursuits, they never really gave thought to any form of space travel. So, their first encounter was with a crashed space ship that had tried exploring the edges of space before getting destroyed. A tragedy, except it gave the recluses a wake-up call that they weren't alone.
Now, it would be an insult to consider the natives primitive in any way - In fact, they were a rather advanced race, capable of a great many marvels, so it didn't take long for them to realize that opportunity had come knocking, and he brought his friend, revelation, and a six pack of refreshing beverages. Meaning, of course, the Caerellions were able to reverse engineer their own breed of spacecraft.
Now, it should be mentioned that up until this point, the vast majority of Caerellions were nomadic. In fact, all of them were, due to planetary conditions. That's just how they rolled. Well, until they realized that if any contact was to be made with this strange new world, they'd need a common point of intrest - a constant on an otherwise shifting world with which to anchor a stream of predicted trade and communication. So, some of the larger tribes got together and reviewed notes. The one thing that piqued their thoughts was the old legend of Tenebris, and its supposedly cursed ruler. Which gave them an idea: build a capital city! Obvious to an outside observer perhaps, but you have to remember that the only city the Caerellions remember failed catastrophically and was probably pretty tyrannical. Not to mention, barely anything on Sola Ventus tends to stay the same.
Nonetheless, the natives got started. It took years to finish, and several of the tribes involved ended up leaving mid-project, considering the idea heretical and doomed. But, for every large tribe that left, three smaller tribes joined, hoping to gain temporary sanctuary from the unceasing storms and predators. Eventually, the city was complete, and Castilli began defying the planetary norm. It didn't take long before the spaceship yards to be finished, and the first ships to be finished after that (funny bit of trivia - the ships looked kind of like manta rays, which gave the first ships bad PR, cause, ya know, Tapisteshar).
And so the galactic history of Sola Ventus began. Well, sort of. Cultural differences and isolation (both geographically and technologically) took their toll on the first encounter, and a sour meeting for the second encounter ended in tragedy, with several deaths for the Caerellions. Specifically, the second encounter was with a Hutt crime lord, who wound up taking several of the Caerellions as slaves. Although as of the current date they remain fairly unknown (at best) or estranged (at worst) in the the galaxy, the inhabitants of the tidally locked planet remain optimistic and continue to try and make their presence known. After all, when you show up fashionably late to a party, you better hope you can make up for it.
