SWU Moving Forward...

Not sure if the staff has been discussing this yet or not, but I thought I'd bring this up.

In the wake of the recent announcements regarding the Expanded Universe being renamed Legends and no longer being considered canon, I was wondering how this will affect our story and canon.

At first, I figured it wouldn't be a big deal, since it seems to be having more of an effect on things post-Return of the Jedi, since that is where the new films are taking place. And since there isn't a lot of (former) EU stuff in the Old Republic era, having only the films, Clone Wars, and the upcoming Rebels show as true canon should allow us to continue as usual.

But then I was thinking... if all the EU stuff is no longer canon, that would include any species and planets that only exist in those realms, like Chiss and such... with the possibility that they wouldn't exist in our era either.


So will we just say we're AU/Legends completely now (instead of being canon, and then AU after TOR)?

Just wondering how all these changes will affect us, if at all. Or if they're being discussed.

We have a process for making up our own species and planets anyway, so why would it matter if the species and planets introduced in EU are declared non-canon? I doubt Disney cares enough to go back and contradict millenia's worth of universe building anyway - so while they may not talk about some of the species/planets mentioned in the EU, that doesn't mean they don't still exist. Besides, what they're talking about mostly has to do with plotlines/major characters introduced in the EU post ROTJ.

What they will and will not change is pure speculation at this point anyway; it's not like any of us are intimately connected with the production and can tell you exactly HOW they've changed Star Wars. So there's really no point in even talking about it until the movies come out and we know exactly what's been changed.

I'd say nothing will change on SWU. This change in lore has less impact on us than when The Old Republic came out if you think about it.

Not like anything will change in the already recorded lore yes? So SWU can just keep chugging on as it always has.

Anyone who ever believed the EU was "official" canon, i.e. canon as it compared to the movies, was absolutely friggin' delusional. George Lucas is even quoted as saying that this movies are "his universe" and everything else (the EU) is "some other universe". Even when with the canon stages, anything that conflicted with the movies was considered non-canon. It's been this way for years. So it's actually silly to believe that this announcement changes anything. The EU was always a separate entity, even if the EU incorporated aspects of the movies into them. The belief that anything tangible has truly changed is wrought from ignorance from how SW canon has always been. The movies have always been the one true "official" canon, while the EU being a separate universe and entity has always been of it's own "canon". Again, that's how it's always been.
