Prisons. The republic had thousands of them, but mostly left the detention and management of undesirables to the local planets and their security forces. However, a select few criminal's crimes are so heinous and detestable that the republic can not allow them to remain on the planet of their conviction. These criminals are sent to the most secure prison in all of the Republic, 'The Vault'.
These men and women are often convicted of multiple homicides, rapes, assaults, and robberies and must be sentenced to life in prison to even be considered for placement in The Vault. But once they are placed there, they never leave. Security is tight, and every minute of every inmate's day should be accounted for. The current population of The Vault is 4,500 not including staff and officers.
This facility is widely considered to be one of the most secure in all the Republic, that was until the most recent riot. According to the final distress beacon sent out by the facility, a group of inmates managed to get their hands on a key and freed themselves. Normally security protocols would have locked down the area, but the prisoners seemed to be ahead of the guards every step of the way. They cut power to locked areas, despite none having knowledge of how to do so. The fashion in which they overcame the defenses of the station was curious at best, and downright mysterious at worst.
In response to the distress signal, the Republic dispatched two squads of marines to retake the facility by any means necessary. Once of these squads was lead by none other than Demyan Mikhail, one of the largest marines to ever serve. This was Demyan's first taste of combat for quite some time, and he was not excited for it. The call had interrupted his reading of "Literature in the Modern Era" novel he was particularly interested in. Despite this, Demyan was ready to serve the Republic in whatever way he could, including retaking a prison facility.
The mission did not go as planned however, as the prisoners seemed to be ready for the marines. The moment the first squad docked, explosive charged around the docking port exploded, destroying the entire vessel in an instant. The remaining squad was forced to get the Marines into the station by alternate means. The squad quickly disembarked in space and grappled onto the station from their craft, hopefully catching the prisoners off guard. This however did not go well either, as the Marines found themselves outgunned the moment they entered the station.
Rather than being in disarray or disorganized, the prisoners were armed and cohesive, pushing the trained marines back until they were forced to outright retreat. The squad was forced to send out it's own distress beacon in addition to the one the station was sending out. ~This is Sergeant Mikhail of the Republic Navy, The Vault has been overrun, and the Prisoners are armed and dangerous. Please send aid~ It repeated.
After the initial disaster of their first contact, only three marines remained, one private, one heavily wounded corporal, and Demyan. The squad now holds up in one of the maintenance rooms, trying to stay hidden until back up can arrive, but god knows when that will be...
