Name:
Yoshua So'nyo
Race:
Human
Age:
24
Height:
5'8''
Weight:
140 lbs
Birth place:
Cilpar
Appearance:
Yoshua is slightly on the shorter side for human males and he is of average weight. He wears simple robes on most occasions, smart but nothing flashy. His face is angular, with high cheekbones, and thin lips. His eyes are light blue. His curly hair is a deep black that he wears at medium length. He has worn a beard in the past, but currently keeps his face clean shaven. He often has bags under his eyes due to working long into the night.
Personality:
Yoshua is an intelligent, well educated and driven man who is a first term Senator representing his small planet home. He enjoys reading and learning and he has a wide breadth of knowledge. Particularly in the fields of politics and economics; which were the subject of his degrees. After his postgraduate work he intended to pursue a career in academia, before heading into Politics. Yoshua loves democracy, but has come to see that it is under attack from all directions. Many of his colleagues entered Politics for the power and prestige that being a Senator grants them, and that truly sickens Yoshua. Unlike many of his colleagues he has no personal fortune, though the salary of a Senator gives him more than he needs to live comfortably, and he refuses any donations from big business. He is an exceptionally hard working man and takes his duties very seriously. There is a lot of stress involved in his new role and he often lies awake into the early hours. Luckily he does not require much sleep, four hours is usually enough to keep him going through the day, though not without a seemingly endless stream of tea.
He is not rash to act, patient and considerate. He has been critisiced by some as being too slow, but he believes it is always better to think things through. He has a very strong morale compass that he stands by. Although he has not had much direct contact with the Order he is a firm supporter of the Jedi. He also believes it is better that they are independent of the Senate to a great degree so as to avoid the corruption that many of it's leading members have fallen prey to.
Yoshua is a kind man who will lend a hand to nigh on anyone. He enjoys helping others and does not expect or ask for anything in return. Politically he is supports the need for a strong military. He is a social liberal and progressive. He believes the Senate should take a more direct role in the lives of the citizens to help the poorest and worst off, and that those with the widest shoulders should bear the biggest burden. Although his first thought is his own world, for he has to represent those who elected him, he is very passionate about the well being of the worst off across the Galaxy. Having volunteered/worked, and made friends, with a number of the worst off in the Galaxy l he has first hand knowledge of the problems they need addressed.
Homelessness is a personal cause to him. He has worked with the homeless for years and believes the Republic should do everything it can to help.
Politics truly fascinated Yoshua, and working in the Senate has become a dream job. He enjoys pitting his wits against others and has already became a talented political mover. He is able to plan his moves carefully and is good at guessing what moves his opponents will make. He is popular with the people due to his honest, down to earth and caring persona. Yoshua loves nature. Fields, trees, streams and the sea. Being from a small agri-planet he grew up exploring the endless green of Cilpar. The only thing he misses more is his family.
He makes friends easily due to his friendly and outgoing nature.
Yoshua was taught that a man should always be honourable, and he strives to do this in all things. He is also brave, and would never go against his convictions.
He is able to make people feel at ease and is a skilled orator. Getting people to see things from his point of view is easier for him than most which helps immensely on the Senate floor.

Bio:
Yoshua So'nyo was born on the Republic world of Cilpar. His parents were farmers and were relatively well off. They owned a large farm in the south of Cilpar that Yoshua would endlessly explore as a young boy. A year after he was born his mother Yarra gave birth to his sister Ela. The two were always close, running through the fields or climbing trees. It wasn't for 8 years after that the final addition to their family arrived, Loa. Loa was a tiny baby girl and Yoshua was too busy to notice her at first, but the two would grow close. By the time Loa arrived it was clear Yoshua was smarter than the average boy. He was years ahead at school and spent hours reading anything he could get his hands upon. He would read as he walked over the hills and streams that surrounded their small village for hours.
Compared to many in the Galaxy Yoshua had a cherished childhood. At the time he thought it was rather boring, but he was blessed to grow up on a world that had a strong sense of law and order. His family lived a simple but happy life. When Yoshua was 13 a man by the name of Ral Harash moved into the village. He was a retired pilot who had spent much of his life in Hutt space. He had a large family and Yoshua befriended his son. He would often play at Ral's home and his thirst for knowledge meant he would badger him for hours about tales of Hutt space. Once Yoshua found out he could speak Huttese he asked him to teach him. His parents agreed, and once a week he would go to Ral's for tutoring.
Ral told him stories about all the places he had been. Including Coruscant. That inflamed his imagination and Yoshua began to read about the capital, and then the Senate. That spurred his interest in Politics, and later Economics.
He excelled in school, and was encouraged to apply to University at the tender age of 16. There was only one place he wanted to go. Coruscant, the greatest and most important planet in the Galaxy. That was what the young 16 year old believed. His mother was against the whole idea, it took his father months to convince her. They laid out dozens of rules. Never leave the accommodation at night, contact them every day and don't do anything stupid to name a few, all of which he broke. The University of Coruscant accepted his application to study Politics.
When he arrived it was like entering another dimension. It could not have been more different. Part of him wanted to turn back straight away and wait a few more years. Luckily his roomate was a great guy named Arca, originally from Naboo. The two were both studying Politics and despite being two years younger they hit it off straight away. However, he did not feel truly happy on the planet for the first year. It was so different and alien, and a huge lack of green. He did not leave the University campus too often in the first year. He performed excellently, finishing top of his class. He was also made aware of how corrupt the politicians of Coruscant were. Countless examples were discussed in their classes and everyone sickened him.
His second and third years were far more interesting. He was more confident. He joined the debating society which he soon loved. He helped them finish the Inter-galactic University Debating Challenge. He also went to parties, got drunk and got a girlfriend for the first time. He had been interested in girls for years, but none had ever caught his eye like Aya. She was in the year below him, and therefore a year older than him, studying Economics. They met at a party where they ended up sharing contact details. They bumped into one another at the University a few times. A few weeks later they met at another party and they went back to her place. After that they began to date. She wasn't the most beautiful woman, but to Yoshua she was perfect. He thought she looked amazing, and they would talk for hours about everything. His grades suffered in his second year, he did not finish at the top of his class, but he easily passed.
They dated throughout their third year and Yoshua was in love. They volunteered together working with the homeless and poor in the worst areas of the planet. It was Aya's idea and Yoshua originally said yes just to please her. But he was genuinely moved to tears when he saw how some people lived. He loved helping them, and he worked very hard at it. He was punched by a drunken homeless man one night, but he was there again the next evening to help out.
In his final year Yoshua applied to study Economics at Corulag University. He had finished second in his class at University and was accepted into a one year Masters programme at Corulag. Aya was continuing her studies at Coruscant, and the two decided to try long distance. Yoshua loved Corulag, for one it had fields! He also enjoyed the deeper postgraduate study. He continued volunteering, and although the poor were less numerous there, he still had plenty of work to do. And he thought things were going well with Aya. He missed her so much, but they spoke daily. He decided to pay a surprise visit one day, and arrived at the flat she shared with her best friend. The door was unlocked so he went in, flowers in hand, and found her with another man. He didn't say anything. He dropped the flowers and walked away. Aya ran after him, apologising, saying it was a mistake and she was just lonely. He never saw her again.
She absolutely broke his heart that day, and he has still not had a girlfriend since. He finished his studies at Corulag and, now 21, returned home. His sister was pregnant, and he was looking forward to meeting his niece. Once he returned home he started to think about what he would do. His initial thoughts were academia, and he applied to study for a PhD in Galactic Economics at Cilpar University. He was accepted onto the programme, but as a part-time student. He decided he had to start working too, and with his excellent degrees he was offered a number of lucrative roles in the planets small finance sector. But he turned them all down graciously, he was genuinely flattered, and applied to work as an accounting officer for a small charity that dealt with the homeless in three nearby sectors. He was over qualified but his boss, Ms. Annei Yarbo didn't care about fancy degrees from elite schools, she hired him because she saw he genuinely wanted to make a difference.
The job was incredibly rewarding, but it also brought political corruption to his attention once again. The planet's Senator was celebrated when he gained Republic funding for that would subsidies a number of industries on the planet. The funding was substantial, and could have helped hundreds of thousands of families if it was focused on the poor. Instead, during the draft stage of the bill, the Senator had the bill amended so the majority of the money would go to a handful of super wealth CEOs and bankers in the finance industry. Men who had funded his campaign. The news was leaked just before his re-election campaign, and the four term Senator was done. He decided not to stand again and dozens of candidates put their name forward. Most were similar to the previous incumbent. Minor career politicians, and the others were bankers or friends of bankers. Yoshua did not dream of throwing his hat into the ring. Not until his boss suggested it. She had discussed it with a number of her friends across Cilpra, and they wanted him. The people she talked to were not CEOs or rich doners, but heads of Charities.
He announced he was standing. He refused donations from the finance industry, he ran his campaign on a shoe string budget from donations from private citizens, but the support of the planet's charities was invaluable. They did not donate fortunes, but it swayed a lot of people when the major charities backed the same candidate. He ran on a platform of change. He would not be bought and paid for by big business, but would serve the people who elected him, and the poor and voiceless of the Galaxy.
He was elected to the Galactic Senate. A very young Senator he was dumbstruck, and his acceptance speech was not the best start. He packed his bags and headed for the capital. It brought back painful memories, but once he got inside the Senate he forgot all about that. He bought a small, but comfortable, two bed apartment. He made his first speech in the Senate on the subject of funding to the outer rims where the poor suffered disproportionately. His second on the need for agri-worlds like his to be given the support needed to ensure the young had the same chances as those born in the core. He soon became a talented speaker, and a man who genuinely believed in what he was saying.
He gained seats on the Senate Budgetary Committee and the Security Council.

A grey pod detached from the main wall of the Galactic Senate chamber and floated to the centre of the floor. The noise was deafening in the Senate that evening, a heated debate about the role of the Jedi was being had, and both sides were deeply passionate about the issue. Both believed they were honestly in the right, and that was always dangerous.
Yoshua stood in the small grey pod that was moving towards the centre. On his left stood his aide, Mara Dren, and a first year student from Coruscant University who had asked to shadow him for a week. He waited patiently for the shouting to abate.
"ORDER! ORDER!" The Speaker cried. Slowly the Senate quietened.
"Thank you Madam Speaker. Madam Speaker, this Republic has only stood because of the blood, sweat, toil and tears of the Jedi Order." There was an uproar in the Senate, cheers of support mixed with jeers of anger. "I do not mean to lessen the sacrifice of our servicemen and women by saying this, but it is a fact. The Jedi and the Republic stand side by side as a bulwark for freedom and democracy. As the bastion of liberty and the rule of law in a brutal and dark Galaxy. Some of my Honourable colleagues have argued that the Order should be subject to greater scrutiny from this chamber, but I say those who argue for this want only to increase their power and THEIR control." Yoshua raised his voice as he continued, a current of anger clearly audible. He moved his hands as he spoke. "I say, Madam Speaker, that this argument is at worst an attempt, by corrupt and greedy Senators, to weaken any potential opposition, and at best, a witchunt born of fear and misunderstanding, against the very people who defend their right to stand here and spread lies and fear."
