Description/role: The Type-96 Cadet Training Ship is what the title says it is. Approximately 700~ years ago, it was decided that it would be much more prudent to train navy cadets to operate a ship using special training ships instead of training them on regular front line ships and having them break something. Instead of reactivating mothballed ships however, it was deemed prudent to show them the ropes on a ship class designed for training and able to be cheaply repaired instead of dealing with the possibly elevated repair costs on a reactivated mothball. Thus far, the class has not changed much in the seven hundred years since it's introduction and with the exception of modernized systems, essentially the same design still remains in production to this day. Although it is used mainly by the republic, the Sith Empire uses it as well, though not in as large numbers and the navies of most independent planets have at least one. This is because the vessel's design is almost universally recognized as a competent and capable trainer. It is cheaply built, cheaply repaired, extremely reliable, and extremely flexible.
In fact, the only major faction that does not posses any of these ships is the Mandelorians. The shipyard at Duxn actually bought the blueprints and constructed four of them in a sort of trial run but production was ceased in favor of a domestic design. The domestic design was chosen due to being more adapted to Mandelorian culture and combat doctrines. The elevation in repair costs was deemed an acceptable tradeoff, but it didn't stop the Mandelorians from using the Type-96 they had already built until they were finally phased out of service.
