Hello there, this is a little primer on the Staff here on SWU. Many of us have been on the site for years, and some made a member of the Staff after only a few months of continuous, beneficial activity. This guide will lay out each tier of staff member, with an explanation describing the responsibilities and way to achieve said rank.
The top tier for staff, Administrators are always veterans of the site. The truly hardcore and utterly devoted, admins are the heads of SWU. Coming in threes, admins are as responsible for the maintenance of the site as they are the story. Admins’ main responsibilities include but are not limited to rule enforcement, creative direction, leading story events and site coding.
Administrators rarely do character reviews, only ever being brought in when a moderator isn’t sure of a subject or if a member isn’t listening to their requests. In terms of reviews, the admins are wholly responsible for the custom element sections. This is to ensure the new species/planet/faction fits just right into the original setting we have here on SWU. Anyone can review in that section, but only admins can approve in it.
As said before, Admins come in threes. This is done to avoid deadlock when voting on ideas or decisions. A 2/3 majority is needed for something to pass. This also ensures that an admin can be reached daily at least. When selecting a new admin, they are always chosen from the moderator ranks to ascend.
Second only to the admins, moderators are the backbone of the site. Most are veteran members, but it isn’t uncommon for newer members to get their green if they’re particularly helpful and friendly. Once upon a time SWU had a mod for each creation board, but these days we tend to have a dedicated team of anywhere from 2-5 mods. Responsible for approving new characters and technology, moderators are our primary reviewers.
Moderators also work with admins in the training and selecting of NGT’s, NG’s and RPM’s. They assist with creative direction for SWU as well as managing story events with the admins. This includes missions and story threads.
Every mod has spent time as at least an NGT, though it isn’t uncommon for an Honored Veteran to return from retirement to take up the green once more. Once an NGT has spent time working with mods and admins to learn the workings of SWU, if there is still an open moderator slot they will be promoted
The boys (and girls) in blue. The NGT’s aren’t technically a true staff member. They are not responsible for accepting anything on the site, and though they are welcome to give input on the story decisions ultimately lay with the mods and admins. The “Next Generation Team” is named for exactly what they are: The potential next gen of staffers on SWU.
Given a sky blue name to be easily noted, a majority of first reviews on the site are done by the NGT. Welcome to go anywhere and make a review, NGT’s are also often assigned a mix of different characters to sharpen their reviewing claws in preparation for becoming a mod. NGT’s are chosen from the more active, friendly members of SWU. Admins and mods alike watch the character creation boards for regular members who make insightful and helpful comments in other member’s applications. This is how new NGT’s are chosen.
If a member has a complaint about anything on the site, an NGT can be contacted but will not be responsible for resolving anything. They will pass word up the chain as needed. There is no real limit on the number of NGT’s for SWU, it could be as little as one and as many as several.
Given the name honestly, vets are always former moderators and administrators. Having stepped down from staff, they are given the purple for distinguished service to SWU. Whether it be from life catching up with them, emergency or just plain deciding to be done with staffing a vet is crowned by a majority decision from the entire staff. So long as the majority think they’ve earned it a member will become a vet after stepping down.
Vets have no responsibilities towards the site, but given their standing membership and knowledge of SWU in general often have their brains picked by staff and members alike. Full of SWU related wisdom and advice, it is almost never a bad idea to listen to a vet when they comment on something being created. HV’s also will help with story missions and events, given their characters rooted stances in their factions.
It is very rare for a former staff member to not become a vet. The only times being when a former staffer chooses to leave in an ugly manner. Be it through unnecessary drama, member harassment or other poor actions. A staffer can also request not to be made a veteran after stepping down.
Though not all vets are active, they are always welcome on SWU.
Like the NGT, RPM’s aren’t technically staff. Noted by their shiny orange stars and group name, the list of current RPM’s can be found in the staff section of our sidebar. Their sole responsibilities lay in the offering to help other members learn the nuances of roleplaying on SWU. There is no limit on activity for being an RPM, one must simply have at least one active character.
In order to be considered for RPM, a member only needs to simply contact a staff member with their request and a small resume of five threads with different members of the site. Group or one on one, this is merely for staff to see if they person does roleplay well with others.
Patience is a must for the RPM, as they are often the first to write with newer and less experienced members. If a member files a complaint against an RPM, an admin or mod will read the thread to see if the complaint is founded or the result of frustration.
Any member, staff or not can be an RPM.
Just like the NGT and RPM groups the News Group is not considered staff, notable by their group name and yellow stars.NG can be comprised of staffers and normal members alike, tasked with the creating of NPC anchormen/women and reporters for the galaxy’s most popular news channels. This is where they create blurbs based on current galactic events told from the perspective of said network.
A member must be active and knowledgeable of SWU’s story and events in order to be considered for the News Group. They are limited to three NPC’s, one for each network. See the current news teams within the Galactic News Networks to see what’s already taken and what is needed.
