Species Name:Faeith
Species Type: Humanoid-insectiod
Planet of Origin: Kroma
Average Maximum age: 65
Age of Maturation: 13
Average Height: 5'0
Average Weight: 95-100lbs
Notable biological features:
An example of a more primitive Faeith in the rural regions of Kroma
The Faeith, being an insectiod species go through four main stages of life which their appearances and abilities drastically change.
These stages are stated simply as Egg or Wy; one of many laid in cycles of 2 or 3 years by the Queen or progenitor of a particular colony, Skin or Croen; growth after hatching marked by the regular shedding of their exoskeletons; Change or Newid; a crysallis stage lasting only a few weeks in which the Faeith develops into the final stage of maturity; One or Yn, reached around 13 years of age the Faeith is now considered fully mature, has now gained its wings and is ready to join the colony as an equal member.
All eggs laid within a colony are laid by the Queen, the only fertile female and the matriarch of their village or city (depending on the population and size of a colony's territory their power can vary drastically). Eggs come in a variety of colors and are all roughly the size of a palm fruit when laid. Over the 6 months of gestation the wy will enlarge until nearly the size a large melon. Patterns and colors are usually painted across their surfaces by the creche-workers, usually playful guesses to the gender or personality of the children inside.
After hatching from the wy the young are small and covered in a soft, though quickly hardening exoskeleton. At this stage all children look virtually identical. Opalescent exoskeletons cover their small, wispy bodies with large compound eyes ranging between various shades of grey to black. In croen a Faeith grows rapidly, shedding their skin frequently to accommodate this. This, culturally is also linked with certain amounts of experience. A child in his 'first skin' is essentially a toddler, while a child suspected to be in their 'penultimate skin' is on the cusp of adulthood. No hair or any real distinguishing marks appear on the child until after this stage though their individual personalities are formed and children in their last few 'skins' will start to paint their bodies in a show of expression as well as beginning schooling or training for their adult occupations.
Sometime in their 12th or 13th year a Faeith in croen will begin to exhibit moodswings, changes in appetite and cravings as well as not shedding despite their exoskeletons becoming ill-fitting to the point of discomfort. These are all classic signs that they are about to transition to the shortest, but most life stage; Newid.
The transition into Newid is marked classically by an intense appetite for protein. If a creche worker believes a child is close to starting the transition they will feed them a variety of protein enriched potions to aid in the development of their crysallis. The child, driven by instinct will seek out a small, safe place generally up on the side of a tree and begin to spin its cocoon, secreting the thick protein rich silk from glands around their mouth.
Inside the crysallis the Faeith go through a brilliant metamorphis, completely liquifying within the cocoon before re-ordering into their adult selves. This stage last approximately 8 weeks.
