Species Name: Radelesser (raid-lesser)
Species Type: Humanoid
Planet of Origin: Gartum
Average Maximum age: 350-400 years in home habitat.
Age of Maturation: 50 years.
Average Height: 5'6 when standing upright, often appear shorter due to hunched posture.
Average Weight: 112-133lbs
Notable biological features:
- Herbivores.
- Poor eyesight (near blind).
- Superior olfactory sense and echolocation developed through clicking the tongue (developed to find their way in low light conditions).
- Lean bodied and slow moving, but deceptively capable of being strong and fast, thanks to the evolution of whipcord muscles developed in response to the predators on their homeworld. They only use such strength and speed in times of danger, however, as such high energy activities can strain their bodies and shorten their lifespan. After periods of intense energy consumption (fighting, fleeing and so on), Radelesser often consume large amounts of food and hibernate for a few days.
- Hunched posture (from enclosed spaces).
- Scaly hardened skin along their backs and the back of their appendages (as way to help protect against rubbing dirt and stone) with softer pale skin around the face and 'underbelly'. - Fingers end in sharp talon like nails (to aid digging and burrowing).
- Slow metabolism.
- Only mate every five decades.
- Remarkably human in facial appearance and proportion with the exception of the nostrils; ends in slots rather than open holes (to prevent dust and dirt getting into them).
- Mostly hairless but possess short, prickly whisker like hairs around underbelly to preserve heat.
Biological Maturity:
- 1-15 is a youth, equal to 0-7 in human terms.
- 16-25 is a pre-teen.
- 25-35 is a teen proper.
- 36-44 is a young adult, between 19-25 in human terms.
- 45-54 is final stage in biological maturity, when they can take a mate and have offspring.
Number of limbs and Type: Four; two arms, two legs.
Culture:
Radelesser are a peaceful people, although culturally insular; they have their own way of doing things in their own time and do not like others forcing their views upon them. As a result, they rarely leave their homeworld and like to ignore (and be ignored) by the universe as a whole. They live in large underground cavern-cities, centered around the roots of the great Fructiele trees which grow various edible vegetables and plants along its roots.
Often considered a low-intellect species when in reality they just think very long and slowly and rarely share their thoughts with outsiders. Natural horders, Radelesser rarely throw anything away, especially foodstuffs, which has made them especially good at preserving green food.
A handful of the population of Radelesser from each cavern-city live closer to the surface, living under hills (natural ones are preferred, but they'll make them if they must) near the base of the Fructiele, and tend to the great trees health. The inhabitants of these small towns are called 'Sky-Wards', and have grown adept at gardening and cultivating foodstuffs on the surface and often considered as odd by the majority of the species due to having to learn to fight with predatory beasts that roam the surface, as well as any hostile off-worlders that came later. This lead the few that visited the world to grow wary of the seemingly frail and slow moving natives. Sky-Wards often trade precious stones with off-worlders for items in need at the time, such as tools and other technology that their kind are unable or yet to produce themselves.
Radelesser have no government or hierarchy structure, each member of each individual stronghold doing the job they are good at in an almost instinctive fashion. Most generally lack any form of ambition, but they are an industrious (if unimaginative) people and excellent at construction.
History:
The history of the Radelesser is, by comparison to other species, rather dull. However, since that has been in large the aim of the population, most of them would consider this a compliment. There have been no wars among the Radelesser; space has always been plenty and food abundant. Culture was mostly uniform and religious practices have never risen beyond the respect of the great Fructiele trees and nature in general. There is no art; paintings, sculptures and music never developed, most of the people content in the beauty of their world's landscape and the symphony of the creatures and weather.
Originally only living in shallow burrows on the surface, the primitive Radelesser eventually started to dig deeper until, millenia later, they constructed the large strongholds under the earth that they live in today.
As time marched on, eventually technology became more advanced but with the single minded purpose of their current needs; the continued structural integrity of the cavern-cities, the development of renewable energy, the defense of their natural habitat. Small surface towns, populated by more adventurous Radelesser, were set up to help cultivate the giant Fructiele trees and protect them from outside forces. These people were to become the 'Sky-Wards' and, while not shunned or cast out from their culture, were considered strange due to being more social and passionate than their brothers and sisters who lived deeper underground (although what passes as 'social' and 'passionate' for Radelesser is far different than that of, for example, humans. A social Radelesser is just less likely to ignore you, a passionate one more likely to speak their minds than stay silent).
Since the planet Gartum was in an out-of-the-way part of the galaxy, far from most hyperspace routes and mapped, perhaps, only by some bored astro-cartographer, the Radelesser nevertheless were eventually visited by people not native to their planet. This proved to be a nasty shock to their society, especially since their first contact with outworlders involved a small space vessel crashing into one of the Fructiele trees.
It takes a lot to rise the ire of one of the Radelesser people; if one is dedicated, it may take some months of protracted effort to get more than a scowl and maybe a baring of the teeth. Smashing into and nearly destroying one of the trees that have sustained a cavern-city for centuries with a large chunk of metal is one of the few sure-fire ways to put them in a murderous mood.
The handful that survived the crash did not survive long once they were located by the Sky-Wards.
The next off-world visit was a lot less unpleasant, the ship landing rather more traditionally outside of the town. Talks were had and some small trade was made, which set the tone for most of the future events that involved those not native to Gartum. Over time, trade like this become somewhat more common, with the Sky-Wards dealing with them often despite the cavern-city dwellers approving of such contact.
While galactic wars have been waged, Gartum remained mostly untouched thanks to its lack of strategic value, advanced resources, combat facilities or allegiance to either the Sith or the Republic.
