Description/role:
If one wishes to see the might of the Empire, then they have clearly never trembled at the sight of the Imperator.
The dreadnought was built from the ground up to be imposing, and more importantly to rip through any and all capital ships that dare to oppose it. Between terrifying broadsides of turbolaser batteries and the tremendous ion cannons on either side, there are few ships that can match the Imperator bolt-for-bolt with firepower. Even if one of the few could, the flagship’s armor is equally tremendous, able to endure concentrated punishment from dozens of its smaller kin long enough for help to arrive. Those who seek to tackle it with bombers and other fighters are usually met with fierce resistance, and the large droid interceptor fleet harbored within the dreadnought’s automated hangar bay can mount an impressive defense, the point-defense turret system providing ample support.
The main fears the ship brings to bear are twofold. The mysteriously dubbed “anti-capital missiles” promise to be larger than any other torpedo or missile in any given battlescape. Classified as weapons of mass destruction according to galactic law, the warheads act as the pinnacle of ballistic warfare; any enemy ship that fails to uphold its particle shields (or worse yet, fails to bring any) is assured a violent, explosive death. Large land targets share the fear, as the missiles are also designed to penetrate all but the thickest of atmospheres.
The other points of fear are the ship’s mammoth ion cannons. Regarded as somewhat of a security weapon more than a military device by most shipwrights, the Imperial designers have elected to prove that even if a weapon doesn’t destroy a ship, you may wish that it had. Built on a scope yet to be matched, the two massive cannons actually have their own shared powerplant, which allows for a shocking recharge rate of one minute. The emitted ion beam is not the small, incapacitating reaction known to most ships, but rather a raging beam that absolutely engulfs crafts of small size. Enemy electrical systems aren’t just shorted out; they are more or less destroyed, melted, or even prone to explode depending on the technology in question. Such is the power of the cannons that they can even be aimed at targets on worlds without atmosphere; entire armies can be betrayed by their weapons, arms, and armor in one terrifying blast.
Behind these sharp fangs are the rest of the dreadnought. Designed with little care for luxury, the entire interior is minimalist and spartan, saving room for a small detachment of troop carriers and landing craft harbored in two large hangars along its bottom. The command systems of the leviathan also serve as a tactical headquarters for both fleet operations and planetary operations; where the Imperator goes, its forces follow and obey.
At its core, the Imperator is a just as much a statement as a ship. That statement is simple: “Long live the Empire!”
