As the purpose of the ship is not to be seen, very few resources were wasted on aesthetic considerations, resulting in a fairly utilitarian design. Function Mirage I - class is the newest line of stealth cruisers designed by the Tapani Royal Navy and comes in two variants; commerce raider and capital ship hunter. The former variant is less heavily armored and armed and often operates alone or in small groups of three or four. The latter model on the other hand possesses a slightly more robust defenses and considerably heavier armament designed to punch through the shields and armor of a military grade ship. They also operate in larger wolfpacks of five to ten ships. As their primary defense is their ability to remain undetected, the Mirage's defenses have been a secondary concern. To this end both variants sport an impressive array of stealth suites, sensor jammers, heat sinks and other devices designed to render them to invisible to enemy sensors. Of course, this still leaves visual detection as an issue but the Tapani Royal Navy Advanced R&D have developed a fairly ingenious way to combat this. Rather than trying to develop an expensive cloaking technology, they decided to coat the ships in a special material that is extremely light absorbing. Thus, against the starry backdrop of the space the Mirage class cruisers appear as nothing more than a black hole which can be quite challenging to see with naked eye. Thanks to it's stealth capabilities, Mirage ships are a purely offensive weapon. Both ship variants do posses deflector shields and point defense systems but compared to other cruisers of similar size they are quite subpar and the shields cannot be activated without revealing the ships location. This renders the Mirage class quite vulnerable against fighters and other ships that have managed to zero in on it. If detected the Mirage I class' defense is not to engage and to flee as quickly as possible. However, few are ships that can withstand a surprise attack by a pack of Miarge class ships. |
