”This is Cherise Ztaarling reporting live from RNN’s state-of-the-art broadcast station to talk to you about the rash of illnesses coming from Hutt Space. With the reveal of an extra-galactic presence conquering Teth I’m here here with Dr. Sigg Udfal to see how those of us in Republic, and perhaps even Imperial, space might be effected. Dr. Sigg, what exactly is this so called ‘Plague’?”
-----------------
The Archeri Plague is the primary way in which the Archeri Chorus propagates itself. It is also how, and why, they wage war.
The Archeri Plague affects its victims on a cellular level, multiplying the midichlorians found in the cells of all life and attuning them to the Chorus. It does this by microscopic spores burrowing into cells straight through the cell membrane. This causes massive tissue damage, leading to internal bleeding on a grand scale.
Transmission: Infection usually occurs after the victim breathes in some of the Archeri spores, released like so much microscopic dandelion fluff from broken ‘seed’ crystals or from the payload of various Archeri biomechanical weapons.
The plague is bloodborne after the initial onset of symptoms. The blood of the Archeri species or any infected individuals should be considered highly contagious.
Onset: Symptoms may appear anywhere between two and twenty days of transmission with an average of eight to ten days. Severity of symptoms correlate directly with level of attunement with the chorus.
Symptoms include but are not limited to:
Death: Those who die from the plague break apart into a mess of swarming biomass. When grouped together by the Chorus, they form into large fleshy pods. Within these pods grow new spore trees. If the full germination process is allowed, small seed crystals are borne on their boughs. Perfectly Attuned victims of the plague will become overgrown with fungus, fulfilling the Archeri lifecycle.
--
Partial attunement. Victims in this category are especially vulnerable to the Archeri Plague. They are drawn into the Chorus in intense physical and mental distress, often catatonic and unresponsive to the uninfected. The hivemind draws these victims together for cultivation into biomass, letting them expire in mass graves to grow more of their crystalline trees. 50% of Galactic Population
Perfect attunement: Victims in this category enjoy no physical symptoms and slightly increased Force sensitivity. [+1 Force Affinity for the duration of the event – this grants no specialties and should never be marked on your character application.] Victims in this category are peacefully integrated into the Chorus when in proximity of the Singing Spire. They become the first eyes and hands of the Archeri within an otherwise hostile population. Perfectly attuned characters will eventually transform into full Archeri after the activation of the Singing Spire unless removed from their sphere of influence. 20% of Galactic Population
Resistant: Victims in this category become sick but are neither killed by the disease nor fully integrated into the Chorus. The imperfect physical symptoms are matched with an equally unbalanced Force sensitivity. [+1 Force Affinity and +2 Sense for the duration of the event – this grants no specialties and should never be marked on your character application.] Partially drawn into the Chorus, they become hypersensitive to the Force, hearing and feeling all life around them and unable to shut it out. 20% of Galactic Population
Immune: For whatever reason, be it outstanding medical care or a miracle of genetics, part of the galactic population remains entirely unaffected by the Plague. They suffer no negative or beneficial effects. Considered especially abhorrent to the Archeri Chorus. 10% of Galactic Population
Special Notes
The Archeri Plague only has its full effect on sapient, biological lifeforms. Non-sapient organic creatures experience only physical symptoms and have been observed to (rarely) recover on their own.
Droids and other sapient constructs are entirely unaffected by the plague.
At this point in time, there is no cure for the Archeri Plague. Bacta injections show some promise in treating the symptoms temporarily. Fungistatic and fungicidal drugs may have some effect -- further testing is required.
Force Sensitive characters are more vulnerable to the Archeri Plague than most. They can never get the Immune result -- though they can, of course, avoid infection by taking proper safety precautions.
What are proper safety precautions? At this stage, void suits are highly recommended. More common breath masks are sufficient for short term passive exposure, though the spores tend to clog filters with unprecedented alacrity.
A character wearing a Force collar, or operating under a similar effect, is deaf and blind to the Force and thus immune to the plague’s indoctrination effects. Obviously, they can’t use any of their own Force related gifts while wearing a collar.
The hivemind sees all stages of infection as something deeply sacred, a gift. These creatures are to be watched over and protected as they make the transition from discordant oneness into the perfect harmony of the great chorus.
Archeri Plague survivors experience permanent after effects. First, a build-up of crystalline minerals in the body shows up as a colorful violet ring around the iris of one or both eyes. Second, they share essentially a very weak Force Bond with other survivors, though characters that were not Force-sensitive are unlikely to be aware of this.
