The Thermal Whip-staff A Monk Displaying the ise of an older Thermal Whip-staff model to a student on a low development world Name • Thermal Whip-staff Classification • Weapon Origin • Bialis Vynn, the Vynn Family; Vynn Industries (the remaining non-Mandalorian branches) (please don’t use without my permission) Specifications Size • - Height: 2 to 5 inches - Width: 2 to 5 inches as whip, 2 to 5 as staff (heftier versions may exist, tho) - Length: 0.3 to 1.75 meter staff | 4 to 6 meters in whip form (dependent on rank of user) Appearance • Though the picture does it some justice, Briefly describe what this tech looks like Composition • Usually composed of Vardium Steel Grip/Frasium/Mulline/Cortosis weave | Those with Mandalorian heritage, may exchange the Frasium - and the composition of the spiked tip, if any - for Mandalorian iron, while others - often those on the wealthier side - may replace the Frasium and the composition of the spiked tip, if any, with phrik or a similar material Function The thermal whip-staff is a unique weapon designed by a member of the Vynn family after encountering blueprints of whip-staffs on one of their raids. It and its variants were an achievement of Bialis Vynn, a renowned member of the Fett clan whose eldest son and heir, Beyaris Vynn, would, like his siblings, produce children with a noble Umbaranproducing a family line that for decades hid their Force-sensitivity. Modified, each of the segments that the whip-staff can form in staff form are embedded with a heating technology can make them as dangerous as vibroweapons. The power is focused along these segments, but the power couplings connecting them are not necessarily any less durable - just not as damaging. Most thermal whip-staffs use a single-grip activation system. The textured, ergonomic grip - often custom-made by each user to fit themselves - is often composed of vardium steel to prevent slipping as well as reduce sweat on hands. On that grip there is an assortment of buttons and knobs. On full models, three of these buttons on similar concepts. The first of them makes use of automated telescoping that can allow one to switch between a standard, one meter staff and a longer 1.75 meter staff, while holding down that button will reduce it into an 0.3 meter long handle meant for somewhat easier concealment and storage, while pressing it while it is in its ‘stowed-away’ mode will allow the thermal whip-staff to prop back up. The second allows one to reduce your whip-staff to the length of a shoto saber quite rapidly. The third, restricted to higher-ranked or more accomplished warruors, allows you to separate segments even further and reach 6 meters of whip instead of 4, while pushing it again will reduce it back to the 4 meters. Another set of buttons allows the whip-staffs to rapidly retract back to 1 meter form, or, if held, into 0.3 meter form. Lightsaber resistant to the point that engaging enemies wielding them for extended periods of time is feasible and even capable of deflecting blaster bolts thank to the cortosis weave - even to the point of wrapping around a lightsaber - it is an extremely versatile, but also quite dangerous weapon that can be used lethal or not depending on whether or not the thermal function is often, or whether or not one wants to kill an enemy with the thermal aspect off. The interlocking power joints of the whip-staffs are, by themselves, lightsaber resistant. Some modify the power joints with things such as kyber crystals, or other things to increase their connection to the Force. Many feature a point at the tip of the whip-staffs meant to serve as a lethal penetrating point for striking more heavily armored foes when wanted. Yet others still may feature a tip that has an energy weapon or projectile launcher of some sort, with these thermal whip-staff variants being referred to as Stingers. Some stingers have a point at the tip, a lethal penetrating point, that can - at the push of a button - reveal a built-in particle beam blaster or some other device. Others have other modifications to increase or decrease lethality. They are often keyed to the biometrics of their wielders, making fencing one a more expensive ordeal as a slicer is often needed to bypass the biometrics and replace them. Recent innovations have made the hilt modular so that it or the non-grip portions can swapped out for ease of repairs, while the detachment also can be used in combat to detach the thermal whip-staff from its grip and maintain its heat for 30 seconds so that it can be used in telekinetic combat for a short time before being telekinetically returned to its grip - or if, not a Force-sensitive, through an electromagnetic or gravitic control system. Most, if not all of the innovations and variants of the thermal whip-staff were created either by Bialis Vynn, his descendants, or researchers at Vynn industries, the most immediate of whom - Cyr of Vynn - owns the patent to the design in both Republic and Imperial space. Some rarer variants are known to have a focused thermal cell that allows it to achieve more damage against heavier armors, while those same variants might have a tertiary mode that allows an electroshock stun mode of varying levels of power that can be accessed, as well as the capacity for the Force-sensitive to activate and deactivate each segment’s thermal and/or electroshock capacity individually while in the midst of combat. Others still have interlocking hilts to allow for polearm/staff combat, and, for, say, one part to be a staff while the other is a whip to create a polearm weapon with a long grip. This is totally restricted to experienced Mandalorians, who earn the honor to use the weapon in this way. Until they do, however, they are expected to train in bo staffs, as well as certain types of flails to emulate the use of their goal weapon. Aside from being more complex to use than even a standard whip-staff thanks to the often pointed tips and the length adjusting, Vynn thermal whip-staffs also use Vynn Industry’s thermal cell. It is used most heavily by Force-sensitives due to their ability to use it with less technical skill required than a non-Force-sensitive. Thanks to their modularity, some thermal whip-staffs are heavily modified with modules, which can be apped for. Please note that some can also operate underwater, and all can operate in moist environments (even heavy rains do little to impact the whip’s efficacy), desert environments, and other difficult environments. They were designed to be the primary weapon of a Mandalorian warrior, originally, and as such are hardy and not easily made inoperable. Like lightsabers, thermal whip-staffs - and other variants of the same weapon - are extremely refined, and best used by force-sensitives, with many force-sensitives applying the tradition of building lightsabers to their whip-staffs. Non-force sensitives, however, can learn how to use them as well, just with some more difficulty or more expense for features. Highly customizable and existing in a variety of forms, thermal whip-staffs and their variants can be apped for. However, the weapons are quite technical. An experienced warrior will always be better using thermal whip-staffs if they are force-sensitive. Indeed, the Vynn are well-known for their prowess in the use of these weapons for this reason. |
