Overall Looks • Quintilian is a tall-ish, angular man with brown skin and dark flyaway hair. His eyes are dark brown and shadowed with heavy, expressive eyebrows. He keeps his beard and moustache neatly shaped but is rarely if ever clean shaven. If left to his own devices, Quinn dresses primarily in autumn tones, choosing clothes that are hard-wearing and a season or two out of style. Quinn's left leg is a cybernetic replacement and he walks with a slight limp, tending to drag his left foot. Faint surgical scars run up and down both sides of his spine, the inside of his limbs, and under his hairline. He speaks with a pronounced Imperial accent that inexplicably fades out in times of stress and other guarded moments, instead mimicking local accents. Quinn takes care to present himself with unobtrusive ease, to rather mixed results in civilian life. His body language is unconsciously wary. Personality Profile Above all else, Quintilian values control. The man he presents to the world is composed and slightly aloof, social pretenses something of a ritual – valuable and oft practiced, but insincere. He feels everything strongly and struggles to keep his responses carefully measured. When that control finally snaps, his anger (or exultation) is intense and sudden. With his memory shot full of frighteningly long gaps, Quinn has spent the better part of the last decade trying to convince himself -- and everyone around him -- that he has it together. He knows that's not true and the moment where it became apparent enough to destroy his career was mortifying. And freeing. While far from reckless, he enjoys taking small, acceptable risks. Quinn is deeply suspicious of anything that feels familiar and, at the same time, desperate for human understanding and contact. No longer able to work in his chosen field with Imperial Intelligence, he feels untethered and at a loss for what to do with the rest of his life. Humans on a predominantly Muun world, he and his siblings received the bulk of their early education at home before moving on to distant private schools. Admiring his father's Imperial posting from a young age, Quintilian was destined for the Harnaidan Senior Military College on Muunilinst. He attended for four years, majoring in Linguistics and minoring in International & Military Affairs. After graduation, he enrolled in the Ministry of Intelligence's cadet-agent track -- an intense 28 week period with little free time and virtually no outside contact. What little social life Quinn had curled up and died as he fell exhausted into his cot each night. It was all inconsequential compared to the fierce pride he felt on completing the program. After a short home leave, he took to his first assignment -- working and observing as part of a more experienced cipher agent's support team. This involved mainly boring or tedious tasks, tempering his expectations somewhat. Yet there was some delight in it too, traveling to far corners of the empire in relative comfort with other eminently talented individuals. By contrast, Quinn's first mission on his own began as something of a disappointment. The cast of Stars Between Us were filming scenes for the following year's 260 episode run on beautiful, recently acquired Dantooine. With a wide following across Imperial space -- and notorious rebels giving Sith civil vehicles so much trouble on Dantooine's verdant plains -- someone had to ensure the safety of the cast and recording crew. It was not the showcasing of his counterintelligence training that Quinn might have hoped for. But it was undeniable that even that silly holodrama meant something to a lot of people. And Quintilian was beginning to see the appeal too, at least after meeting Rinkah Styles. She was scarcely younger than him but sharp and world-weary in a way that arrested his attention. After recording wrapped up, they stayed in touch. They married several months later in an uncharacteristic rush of impulsivity. With both their careers, they were so rarely even on the same planet ... Quinn purchased a small apartment on Dromund Kaas that remained empty. His family took the news in turns, star stuck or disapproving based on Rinkah's immediate proximity. The reintegration of the Sith Order affected all of the Empire's citizens, and the Ministry of Intelligence more than most. Quinn was swiftly promoted to cipher agent to fill demand, and, he suspected, to keep more valuable personnel firmly in the Ministry's hands. He joined the retinue of an Arkanian Sith -- Darth Novus -- without knowing much about his new master either way. At first, he walked on eggshells before realizing she had little interest in seeing him personally, preferring that he advanced her goals discreetly and with plausible deniability. Dead drops and encrypted holo messages were not much different than the usual procedures. The Dark Lady did have one unusual request, however. With a vested interest in both extreme secrecy and cutting edge biotech, she ordered Cipher Twenty-Six to be fitted with an experimental cybernetic implant, the Mnemosyne Device. He consented, of course. By then, there were plenty of rumors of what could happen if you chose to be difficult with the Sith and dismissal was the very least of it. The Mnemosyne Device was designed to inhibit the formation of new long term memories while on information-sensitive jobs. The trigger was simple -- a high dose of B vitamins, commonly added to the supplement drink powders of military rations -- and the effect would last 10 to 12 hours before requiring another dose to be taken. Long term effects were not yet understood though it has shown promise in previous human trials. It worked, as far as Cipher Twenty-Six or any of his handlers could tell. He worked for Darth Novus for several years, specializing in infiltration and high-profile corporate defections. Most notably in 3600, Quinn smuggled one of Hadrassi Emergency Medical System's employees out of Republic space with her work: samples of a new Rakghoul vaccine. He was proud of that one before he forgot it. When the Sith would take Taris, his unseen work would save the lives of many Imperial soldiers. Unfortunately, the Taris invasion remained ridiculously costly for the Empire, considered a mistake by many among the aristocracy. Darth Renata supported this opinion as she concurrently built support for herself in all quarters. A few short months later, Darth Novus was arrested and publically executed. Suddenly, as the Empire celebrated its new Empress, Cipher Twenty-Six was without a patron. Like many of the Dark Lady's other servants, he was reassigned. Back with the Ministry of Intelligence, he continued his work under a heavy cloud of suspicion. The Ministry did not trust the Sith, and he had been their creature too long. After a series of slightly demeaning missions more befitting a less experienced agent, Cipher Twenty-Six's next task of note was in 3596. Embedded in the elite Fobosi sector of Coruscant as a language teacher at the University, Quinn was meant to report back on likely targets for kidnapping or defection. He fell out of the habit of using his implant -- with no knowledge of how long it would be until extraction, the device would have done more harm than good. The Invasion of Coruscant came first and without new orders. As orbital fire devastated the district, Quinn was desperate to escape. In this state of panic, he patched into Imperial communications and hastily planned to secure a berth offworld by any means. Unfortunately, he cut the time much too short. Falling debris pinned him on his way out of his quarters and he lost consciousness in the dark. Sometime later, Quinn was dug out by emergency personnel -- and was immediately implicated as an enemy spy by his possessions, including the commlink. In a Republic holding facility, he received due medical care for his injuries, including the amputation of his ruined left leg. He languished in that prison for 11 months, muddled and vague as the supplement laced food, Republic military surplus, constantly triggered the Mnemosyne Device. After the Peace of Prazhi, a chilly prisoner exchange sent Cipher Twenty-Six home to Kaas City. Back on a proper diet and with a new cybernetic prosthetic for his missing limb, Quinn gradually resurfaced. His wife Rinkah took a very controversial year away from filming and they enjoyed a renewal of their relationship. Their daughter Yuliya was born 10 months later. Quinn returned to work with a new designation -- Fixer Twenty-Six -- though it grated on him to be restricted to support and analysis. It gave him much more time close to home, however, which was very much needed as Rinkah returned to filming. All seemed well for a time, until the organic components of the Mnemosyne Device began to show wear and tear. Quintilian began forgetting things and seizing on any likely narrative to fill the gaps. While living it, it took an embarrassingly long time to draw the connection. Fighting against the effects came with a new side effect: migraine headaches that left him all but confined to his bed. Gradually, everything broke down. He confused details about his marriage with the life of Rinkah's holodrama personality. He screwed up at work. He mistook the live-in babysitter for a home intruder and broke her arm. This last proved too terrifying to conceal though the Ministry secured an out of court settlement. Quinn's dismissal from the Ministry of Intelligence was accompanied by the removal of the Mnemosyne Device -- it remained government property even after so many years. With professional and home life still in tatters, Quintilian returned to his parents' home on Mygeeto for a stifling 6 weeks. When he was able to bear that no more, he decided to travel lightly and look for other work, leaving most of his assets to his wife. |
