Karath Gaath
Full Name • Karath Gaath Race • Zabrak Birthplace • Coruscant Age • 27 Gender • Male Sexuality • Hetero Faction • Jedi Concept • Jedi Knight; Jedi Artisan, lifelong techhead Languages • Basic, Zabraki, Twi’leki (conversational), Binary (understands) Assets •
- Lightsaber: Karath built this dual-phase lightsaber for himself, with its vibrant blue and gold plating, upon his elevation to Jedi Knight, as an expression of his artistic drive and a symbol of his first step on the path of the Artisan. It houses a Dragite crystal producing an equally vibrant blue blade.
Appearance Height & Weight • 6'1" - 160lbs Overall Looks • Tall and lean, with a figure of wiry muscle, Karath is a man in fine physical condition. He is naturally bald, sporting a crown of curving cranial horns; these are kept filed to blunt points, so as not to snag or tear the hoods of his robes. He wears the elaborate facial tattoos of all Zabrak of age, and the shadowing of the desaturated blue ink around his amber eyes makes them all the more striking to look at. There are a number of superficial burn scars around his body, mostly from blaster grazes, with one on his right forearm caused by the precise shiim cut of a lightsaber.
Personality Profile Compassionate and personable, Karath is never without a kind word to spare, and endeavours to seek out and support the best in the people around him. Equally content to follow as to lead, he will find his part to play in whatever task needs doing and see it done to distinction. Above all, he loves to teach, and can always be relied on for information and insightful opinions on matters both practical and spiritual. He has a particular affinity for droids and technology, with a broad base of knowledge that allows him to maintain most ordinary machines, and a love of art.
He carries a strong sense of justice and principle, and although this means he can always be relied on to do the right thing, it can just as easily spark righteous anger when provoked by displays of injustice, especially those he is not in a position to oppose however much he might wish to. Learning to rein in this anger - not to smother it impassively, but to allow it to smoulder in a manner he can control, lest it take control of him instead - has been the most difficult journey of his Jedi career so far.
Background Father • Tanud Gaath, 52, speeder mechanic Mother • Aunir Gaath, 49, interior designer Siblings • None Other Important Connections • Shirro Pharani, 54, Karath's Jedi Master Overall History •
Upbringing and Youngling Years
The story of Karath Gaath began the same way as many other Jedi; in the sprawling cityscapes of Coruscant. Born in the relatively well-to-do household of Tanud and Aunir, a driven and hardworking couple, Karath would likely have had a career in one of his parents' fields in his future if destiny had not had other plans. Like so many of his future peers, Karath's sensitivity to the Force was discovered quite by chance by a passing Jedi. A lengthy conversation was had with the young boy's parents; though they would sorely miss their son, they were firm believers in the power of the Jedi to change lives for the better, and could hold fast to the idea that Karath would grow up to do just that.
As Karath grew up into the training regimen of a Jedi Youngling, it became clear to his teachers and carers that he had inherited two great things - his parents' affinity for mechanics and art, and a strong connection to the Force. When he was not training, he was either reading, drawing, or tinkering; he found that he could rely on these hobbies to calm and focus his mind no matter how tired or troubled he felt. The first person to approach him with the notion that these had become his own methods of meditating in the Force would soon enough take him on as her Padawan.
Shirro Pharani was a slight, elegant Mirialan woman of pale green skin, who wore the traditional racial tattoos upon her face as a living tapestry of the things she had learned and accomplished through her life. She had observed Karath for some time, seeing in him the promise of an eager learner; they conversed frequently over a period of weeks, beginning to get to know each other, as the end of Karath's initial training drew closer. When Shirro was satisfied that this was the decision to which the Force was guiding her, she made the offer for Karath to enter the next stage of his Jedi life at her side as her Padawan. Karath accepted gleefully, hesitating only so that he could have time to meditate on the decision himself and be certain it was right.
Jedi Padawan
Karath and Shirro turned out to be kindred spirits in many ways. Each was possessed of a keen connection to the Force, and placed great value on the time they spent in meditative study of its mysteries. Shirro was an archaeologist by profession, and instilled in Karath an appreciation for academics that was built on his natural aptitude for the practical problem-solving of droid mechanics. In their years together, Karath accompanied Shirro on expeditions all over Republic space; they explored timeless ruins, delved into research of obscure planetary histories, and assisted many academic institutions in the collection and preservation of their artifacts.
Despite their galaxy-hopping adventures, Shirro made very sure not to stint in the rest of Karath's training. He demonstrated a particular talent for telekinesis, which suited Shirro's teaching very well, and they practiced the art of telepathy together, gradually broadening the distance at which they could project their mental messages to each other, among many other studies. When wielding her lightsaber, Shirro was a deft practitioner of Form Six, Niman; the ideal fit for her preference to wield the Force on the rare occasions she needed to do battle. In training Karath in this form, she often repeated to him a mantra that outlined her martial philosophy: "a user of Niman is a user of all, but a master of none, yet a master of Niman is a master of all." She believed that the perceived weakness of Niman's jack-of-all-trades techniques, borrowing just a little from the tactics of all the preceding forms, could be turned into an all-encompassing strength by a practitioner who could achieve real mastery.
Shirro's mastery, and Karath's growing skills, would eventually be put to the test when the call came for the Jedi Order to join in earnest the war against the encroaching Sith Empire. Learned though she was, Shirro had no head for military strategy and she knew it; she volunteered immediately that she and her Padawan would be best utilised in logistical support and rear-guard capacities. Karath found many opportunities to put his mechanical knowledge to use in helping to repair damaged vehicles, droids and equipment, while Shirro largely assisted medical staff in moving and triaging patients.
All the same, combat often found the pair - but it did not find them wanting. They acquitted themselves admirably in their relatively few engagements, using their versatile, Force-augmented tactics and the strategic philosophy of Sokan to outmanoeuvre and overcome their Imperial foes. On a few occasions, they did battle not with Imperial soldiers, but Sith Knights; these battles were ferocious on a whole other level, pushing Master and Padawan to the limits of their martial prowess, but by the strength of their tactics and their trust in the Force, they were able to overcome.
Karath's most grueling moment saw him battle alone against a Sith Knight and her violent apprentice, who had succeeded in injuring and neutralising Shirro in a brutal ambush on a detachment of Republic medics attempting to evacuate wounded from a combat zone. At first, his fear threatened to swallow him up - his Master could offer him no help, and he was effectively alone, the only thing that stood between these two Sith and his wounded comrades - but when the realisation struck him that there was too much at stake for him to countenance failure, he was able to find his focus again.
He knew that he could not back down, lest he give the fiends a chance to attack the evacuating troops again, but he could not give them a chance to press their numbers advantage either. A two-on-one fight would probably be the end of him - but two one-on-one fights would be much more winnable. The instant an opportunity presented itself, then, he wielded the Force to collapse a hastily assembled warehouse on top of the Knight, isolating the Acolyte long enough to strike him down with a ferocious offensive. The Sith Knight extricated herself from the wreckage of the warehouse too late to intervene, and Karath was quick to turn upon her. In an astounding display of his telekinetic powers, he called his Master's discarded lightsaber into his free hand, and set about the Knight from afar with a barrage of strikes from both sabers, floating disembodied in the air. When he closed the distance, he took his own saber in hand, struck through his opponent's beleaguered defences, and plunged his blade into her chest.
With the brief and fierce battle won, he helped the wounded Shirro along to rejoin the evacuating medics. By the time their ship launched off the planet's surface, the story of Karath's mighty lone stand against the Sith had spread through the patients and crew, lighting a fire of fresh excitement and morale. They had been saved, they knew, by this courageous Padawan! Shirro swelled with pride to have witnessed her apprentice rise to this unexpected challenge, and sang his praises to their commanders at the first opportunity. For a mercy, the war continued for only a few more months before the signing of the armistice on Prazhi. Karath and Shirro welcomed the news of peace gladly, and parted ways with their commanders to return to Coruscant. Believing that little remained for her to teach him, Shirro began immediate preparations to subject Karath to the Trials of Knighthood.
Armed with her commander's report of the fateful battle, she first submitted to the Council that his victory against the Sith duo constituted his Trials of Skill and Courage. He had overcome his fear of what he perceived to be a superior foe, devised a cunning strategy that both played to his strengths and robbed his enemies of their main advantage over him, and executed it flawlessly to defeat them one at a time. The Council gladly accepted this reasoning, and joined their voices to Shirro's in praising Karath's ingenuity and bravery.
Buoyed by the Council's approval of these first two Trials, Karath faced the remaining three with excited zeal. What perhaps struck him the hardest was his Trial of the Flesh - which was simply Shirro's goodbye. They spoke at length over an afternoon, sharing bittersweet reminiscence on their adventurers and everything they had learned from each other. Shirro reassured her Padawan that although their paths would now diverge, he was more than prepared to face whatever the galaxy could throw at him, and would become a splendid Jedi in his own right. Teary-eyed but gladdened to have had the opportunity to share these memories once more, Karath bade his Master farewell. In a traditional ceremony within the Temple, he was shorn of his Padawan braid and elevated to the rank of Jedi Knight. Shirro, at a later time and in recognition of having fully trained a Padawan and served with distinction in the war, was granted the rank of Jedi Master.
Jedi Knight
Karath fully intended to take advantage of the newly won peace to begin pursuing the path he had decided upon for himself as a full-fledged Jedi - that of the Artisan. This rarely followed calling had called strongly to him, appealing to his love for art and technology. His first act was to make for himself a symbol of this new vocation; an artistic new dual-phase lightsaber, with plates of a vibrant blue metal etched with golden ink. Thus equipped with a sign of his station, he dove into deeper research of more advanced electronics and metalworking techniques, the better to teach himself and his fellows how to truly perfect their lightsabers.
Alas, he did not have much opportunity to do more than begin establishing his reputation before the Archeri Crisis once more drew the Jedi Order onto the battlefield. This time, however, they would march upon a mutual enemy with the Sith by their side. Karath had his share of reservations over the idea, but bit his tongue, even as he shipped out to serve the Republic counteroffensive as a quartermaster of a sort; his new responsibility over a workshop in the Temple had taught him the ins and outs of logistical organisation, which he put to good use in making sure the troops' supply lines kept flowing. Perhaps to Karath's surprise, the alliance between the Republic and the Sith Empire bore fruit, and the Archeri Chorus was broken and repelled in a dramatic offensive.
Karath seized the first opportunity to return home once the fighting was over, though even he heard news of the unprovoked surprise attack of a Republic battlegroup against Sith vessels shortly after victory over the Chorus had been declared. He was ill-suited for the battlefield, he felt, and would be better served remaining home, sharing his knowledge with his fellow Jedi and further honing his skills.
