New Beginnings

[Ross Astar]

Ross walked into a small and isolated room on one of the upper levels of the temple, quickly gazing down at the lower levels. The other Jedi at the bottom seemed to flicker as their brown robes rushed past. He assumed that there would be many different types of race down there, although the forms below just seemed to all look the same. That was the one thing he found most interesting about the Jedi order. The fact that there were so many different types of people, and that the way they looked was only the beginning. It was amazing how many different lightsabers there were, and the techniques that each individual Jedi specialized in. Even the colour of the elegant weapon was a mark of individuality. Even what seemed like the most superficial aspect of the weapon, was significant in its own way.

His Master had not been contacting him as of late, he quickly thought to himself as he turned the handle. He supposed it was because she was busy, being as she had her new padawan now. A brief bit of jealous came up in him again, although he quickly discarded it. He wasn't as jealous as he was before, but he still had his brief feelings of envy. Still, he knew that he wouldn't let that alter his views in a way that some of the darker Jedi did. He would make sure of it.

Glancing around, he noticed another person had come to the same room as him. Ross uneasily shifted his feet on the spot, hoping that he wouldn't notice him straight away. He really did need to work on his confidence around other people.

Mevan strode into the room with an eerie silence, but the knight in front of him had noticed him anyway. Mevan cleared his throught and tried to think of somthing to say, this was going to be a very important moment in his life, after all.

Behind Ross the flitting of space craft constantly played in the window, the lights of The City-Planet glowing in the darkness outside. Mevan moved forward closer and brushed his messily uncombed hair to one side, he stood upright and begane to talk.
'I belive that you have expressed intrest in becoming my master, Astar.'

Just like Mevan, to start a relationship on informal terms. Since his first master died Mevan had been cooped up in the temple, if he'd gone any longer without training the council may have denied him further apprenticeship as a padawan. That wouldn't have been what Mevan wanted, so he was greatful for the gesture. Now though, he was warey of the relationship but relationships grow and hopefully Ross would last longer then his previous master.

'I'm Mevan Maire, I hope that this apprenticship will go well.' He continued, correcting his stance and almost smileing despite himself.

''Yes, I did express an interest'' Ross said, smiling uneasily at the padawan. He was still a bit shy around him, despite the fact that he had probably been already told things of his new master's skills and capabilities. Never the less, he could still decide that he did not like his new master, which Ross had heard was a very common case, especially with padawans who had had a previous master. Luckily he had only ever had one master, but he could emphasize why someone would feel that way.

He looked over the boy, or rather looked up. The first thing he noticed was just how tall he was. He was guessing that he was around 6 foot, or perhaps taller which was obviously going to make him appear larger than Ross who was only 5 foot and 8 inches. Still, he wasn't ashamed of his height so he didn't dwell for too long on it. The next thing he noticed was that he seemed capable looking. He had large muscles and generally looked like he could do fine in a fight. Perhaps his unarmed abilities wouldn't match his as of yet, but that could change.

''I hope that it goes well too Mevan'' he said warmly. ''So tell me, what exactly have you already learned form your previous mater?'' he asked with interest. There would be very little point in going over things which he already had experience of. Judging solely on his age however, he decided that it would more than likely be time that he started traveling to other worlds again.

Mevan had noticed Ross sizeing him up, and let him. No doubt he'd been told much about Mevan, much more then Mevan knew of Ross. He looked lightly at Ross trying not to look like he was scowling, he diddn't intend to convey negative emotions. After all, negative emotions weren't very good platforms for the jedi.

'My origional master was a consular, I've been taught to rely on my will in the force and abide by a code of pacifism to acheive my goals.' Mevan spoke as though he'd prepared it as a speech, he was really looking forward to speaking on a more personal level with Ross though. He'd gone too long without smileing.

'I have heard that you are a guardian, Ross. I look forward to learning some new... 'tricks' you may have to teach me.' Mevan said, showing his studious nature.

“A consular is a very different form of Jedi than am I, as you obviously now being as you know I am a guardian.’’ Ross said simply. He was still a bit apprehensive around Mevan, but he was getting slightly better. His confidence would more than likely hold him back on some things, but he wouldn’t let it affect his Palawan’s teaching too much.

‘’I will teach you a variety of tricks as you call them then, being as you are looking forward to it. I use quite an impressive way of attacking, or so I am told, so you may not be able to do some things I can, but we will work on them. I wouldn’t let it worry you in the training’’ Ross said, smiling slightly at him.

‘’So, I take it that you have had quite a bit of experience then? I see that you are more than likely ready to go on different planets to train as well as this one which is very helpful. The skills you can learn vary greatly from place to place’’ he informed him.

[Croaky]

'Well.' Mevan started, easing and leaning against a wall in the room. 'As long as we don't get into too many fight, then I'm fine. But I guess you can't help that.'
Mevan was, of course refeing to the fact he was a guardian, and not suggesting he was a brute but secretly Mevan was hoping to wind him up. It would lighten the mood.

'I have noticed you are a practiser of Jar'kai.' Mevan noted. 'I must express a personal distaste but hopefully I'll be allowed to stick to using my current form of combat.'

Ross wasn’t quite sure what Mevan had implied by his last sentence. He had a good guess that it would probably be some kind of joke, however, considering he preferred to use the mind and he preferred to use more physical methods. “I’m sure that any skills I have are nowhere near as skilled as the simplest of things you have picked up from your previous master. In fact, I think you should be the one teaching me rather than the other way round’’ he stated back sarcastically.

“I will try my best to teach you the form you are most comfortable with, including Shii-Cho obviously being as you need to learn that. Which form are you the most competent at anyway?’’ Ross asked, not too sure.

Mevan smiled finally, he noticed the sarcasm but he tended to it as a real statement, just to further the annoyance.
'I am pretty good, you flatter me.' He returned, laughing a little.
Mevan scratched his chin, contemplating how he would phrase his tutoring.
'I have learnt well the style of Djem so, with applied shien. If your going to fight your going to have to finish it quickly eh?' He stated.

Mevan moved matters forward.
'It will be interesiting to be taught by you Master, it leaves me to wonder what the first order of buisness is because i can't stand to stay in this temple much longer.' He said.

Ross was pleased that Mevan had cracked a smile. He was still a bit nervous as to whether they would get along, as he seemed to have irritated people in the past, but so far the signs were good that they would get along. This would of course be beneficial in the long run also for he was sure that padawans learnt more when they actually liked their masters. ‘’Well, I am pleased that you are flattered then. Although, don’t let your arrogance turn you to the dark side... or something similar’’. Ross listened carefully to the form he had been practising. ‘’Well, I have little experience personally in that form, but I will do my best to make sure you can still learn it’’.

‘’I am sure that we will receive something to do soon. In the meantime, however, we could always go off world if you would like’’ he offered, sensing that he was getting a bit restless here. The choice of words he used gave it away slightly as well.

Mevan leaned off the wal and paced the room for one second, wrinkling his nose at the word arrogant.
'I appreciate your efforts, Master. I'll be sure to make the most of them.' He said, taking Ross's statement in humility.
Meven walked to the window and looked out of it onto the night cityscape.
'There isn't much point going offworld if there isn't anything to do.' Meven said. 'Do you have any sort of craft yourself?'
Mevan asked, eager to find out wheather his new master had any form of personal transport. Mevan was fascinated by spacecraft.

''That would be advisable. I am your master after all and as a result I do have more experience than you'' Ross replied, a little seriously. It had been a prime worry of his that if he should have a padawan, then they would be the type who would not listen. Mevan did not give that impression, however he still considered it something to be wary of.

''Back on Naboo, I know that I have a ship there. I was only a child when I left, but one was bought for me all the same. It was a christening gift I think'' Ross replied. ''I could go back there if I really needed to get it.'' He didn't find ships at all interesting though. They just seemed to be big pieces of metal that could fly. However, he could tell that Mevan found them interesting. He wouldn't have asked that question otherwise. ''So, do you have a ship then?''

Mevan listened intentley to what Ross was saying, nodding his head every now and then. He noticed that Ross didn't give any specifics on the ship, he either had no specific interest in them or hadn't really flown it, or both.
'I see...' He commented, uselessly.
'I'm fixing somthing up, nothing too fancy.' Mevan said. 'It's a DELAYA-class courier that I managed to buy as a heap of junk for dirt cheap.' he explained.
'It's a pretty rare model, produced by horsche kessle drive and designed to be as fast as a starfighter.'
Maven tried to hold himself back on the details, but he was pretty proud of it.
'I'm designing it as nothing more then a personalised freighter, but i've fitted it with some standerd armnents and heavy armour, as well as a nifty stealth system.' He continued. 'I'm just working on the budget and overseeing the fitting of it'
'I don't mean to sound arrogant... but i think it's very good.' He Finished, flicking hair out of his eye.

''It soudns rather excellant. I don't know much about ships, but I am sure something like that could come in handy. I presume you know how to fly it as well, so it would appear that you will be our pilot should we ever need to go off world. I think that is pretty much a given that we will anyway'' Ross said, impressed at the sound of Mevan's ship. He was pleased that they had a ship between them, for it always was something that a Jedi required. ''I'm not too sure on the details of my ship. All I know is that it is a H type Nubian yacht.''

[Croaky]

'Yes it is indeed a beauty, and pretty much complete by time we need to go offworld I expect.' Mevan said, finishing the topic on his ship.
'A Nubian then, eh?' Mevan said in interest. 'Good shape, no weapons, very good hyperdrive.' Mevan recounted, stroking his chin. Mevan looked at Ross. 'You have to have a hobby when your not allowed off the planet, you see.'
'Useually reserved for royalty, I take it you were from a noble houshold?' Mevan inquired. Narrowing his eyes in interest.

‘’Well, if you ever need any help completing the ship then just let me know. I may be able to be of some sort of help’’ Ross offered. He had little knowledge of ships but he was sure that if they was any heavy things needed lifting then he could do that.

‘’I know that it is a good shape, but I did not know about the hyperdrive. I suppose it is always good to know that the insides of a ship are admirable as well’’ he said, interested about the details of his ship. ‘’I was indeed of noble household. My family were related to the Queen in power around the time I was born so wealth wouldn’t have been an issue should I not have become a Jedi’’ he informed Mevan.

[Croaky]

'That must've been nice.' Mevan responded, contemplating what Ross said. 'All of that wealth.'
Mevan paused for a minute, staring of into space.
'Alas, I suppose you do not remember much about about it, since you must be under six in order to join the order.' Mevan said. He walked over to one of the chairs that lingered next to the lone table in the side of the room.
'I didn't have any luxeries as a child, The first things I really remember are becoming a fugitive nd surviving on my own on Nar Shaddar.' A look of darkness swept across Mevans face but it was quickly swatted aside as Mevan turned on the chair towards Ross and smiled.
'Oh well, must not dwell on the past.'

''I have very little memory of my past before the order'' Ross commented. ''My master informed me of certain details however so I am aware of where my parents live should I ever find the need to contact them.'' Ross then listened carefully to what Mevan said if his own past. It seemed that he had had rather a tough life before he was accepted into the order, which made Ross worry a little. It was said that if someone had a harder life when they were accepted as a Jedi, then it meant that had a few darker emotions. He was sure that Mevan would be fine however, but it was always best to be slightly wary. ''Well, I am sorry that you did not have the best of lives. At least you are part of a great cause now though''.

[Croaky]

'Well, it's all behind me.' Mevan said. Mevan got up and walked over to Ross.
'It has been a pleasure to meet you, and i'm sure it'll be interesting learning under you.' Mevan said, a hint of happyness in his voice was complemented by his smile.
'If you excuse me, I belive my ship is almost complete. It appears that my budget wasn't a problem.' Mevan said.
'After keeping my beedy eye on the shipyard i can see they have the paintjob finished!' Mevan commented, surprised on the speed of the work.
'I'm going to be off to regester the ship and probably admire it for a few hours, so you'll know wher to find me if you need me.' He said.

Mevan bowed his head and made his way to the door way.
'May the force be with you, master.' He concluded before exiting.

''I shall enjoy teaching you as well. I'm new at this but I am sure you will bare with me whilst I learn how to be a good teacher. I do apologise if I do ever seem to be not at all capable'' Ross commented, smiling at his new padawan. ''I am pleased that your ship is complete then. I will have to look at it myself one day''.

Ross nodded back at Mevan. ''May the force be with you as well''.
