Even as she arrived Aunna could feel something from Vex…was it…hope? She hadn’t heard the short conversation they’d had as she reached them, only the haughty words Vex spoke reached her ears as she sliced into Ramseye’s ribcage and liver. As she readied her next strike, a crackling sound and light passed her side singeing her arm and making it painfully numb as the bald marauder staggered back from her attack, then being knocked backward by the lightning. Behind her she heard the rustle of cloth and crunch of gravel…the staggering steps that signaled Vex’s escape from the battle. He was alive, and he would be safe now…as safe as someone who had been shot could be anyway. She’d done her job as best she could, now all she had to do was get the hell away from there herself. As the monstrous man got to his feet once more, she started to dart away once more, the opposite direction of Vex. Even from this distance she could almost feel Vex’s surprise and consternation…as if he’d noticed she’d been the one to save him. No, that had to be her imagination.
Already in motion to flee the scene, the felt something else…something that took hold of her. Aunna barely had time to whip her head in the direction of the bald demon, bleeding and looking murderous, and she knew he was going to take her life if he could. An odd feeling of weightlessness and constriction wrapped about her and she was lifted into the air and flung. Blue eyes shut against the death she felt coming, it was just a heartbeat away now, but she accepted it…as long as he was safe. Her flight was slowed, however, as the man’s attention was drawn away from her and she was let go. She felt herself slam against a pile of jagged rubble, metal, and the solid form of what was left of the wall of the cantina. As the wind was knocked out of her and she felt the two ribs the cathar had cracked earlier break fully, Aunna let out a silent cry of pain which rippled from her through the force, her every nerve on fire with it.
Her senses dulled and her chest burned as she fought to regain her lost air with those bruised and broken ribs and back muscles. Everything was quiet now and she wondered vaguely if she could get up on her own. Testing the thought, she gathered her feet below her as best as she could before pushing against the wall, trying to get up from the broken wall and bits of rubble. The motion sent jolts of pain through her, though she managed to get part of the way up before she was forced to sit again, her head reeling from the sudden stab of pain. She had only just gotten over the stomach churning pain enough to try again when Damien had appeared, two other soldiers behind him. Sighing, she grunted at his question, noting his rank insignia.
At least one of my ribs are broken, but I’ll live.
She stated simply, taking his hand and getting to her feet with a wince and a fresh wave of pain. As she stood, listening to Damien speak, she sighed and lowered her head, allowing him to turn her and restrain her, blue eyes closing in defeat and resignation. Aunna had known it was coming, had known that this would happen, but it was painful none the less. For a moment she felt her heart begin to break. All of her hard work, all those years of service and dedication, it was all going to be lost with this…everything she’d known was going to be taken from her. A single tear slid down her face but no more as she opened her eyes once more, their color having darkened to a grey blue. Her mind struggled to deny this all, to keep her pride intact, to tell the sergeant where he could shove his blaster, but Aunna knew that wasn’t going to help anything…she knew it was all correct.
I understand, Sergeant.
She replied quietly. For a moment only she reached out through that tenuous link she had with Vex, her heart seeking some form of comfort in knowing he was alive and that every thing she had just done wouldn’t be in vain, but as soon as she realized what she had subconsciously done Aunna shut herself off, clamping down on her feelings and monitoring her actions strictly. As the transport came and the last member of the team arrived, the sniper who had shot Vex, they led her away onto it bound for Republic space once again. Passing the sniper she raised her chin slightly, just enough to gaze at the man from the corner of her eyes, before lowering her head once more and passing by him. As her thoughts flitted through all of the things that had, and could, happen, only one thing remained, a silent calling of her heart…
…Vex.
