Bio: With the increase in political tension between the Republic and the Sith Empire, both sides spent increasingly larger budgets re-fitting and updating their military capabilities. But in the case of the Sith, a host of problems plagued the budding military, everything from internal rivalry to outright shortages of funds and manpower. In an attempt to forge a military power-base free of these concerns, a gathering of idealistic Sith aristocrats turned to the corporate sector, setting up meetings with Crime Lords behind closed doors.
A great many meetings were held, often with varying aristocrats and Crime Lords as greedy individuals sought to outmaneuver one another, but eventually the talks did bear fruit; and, for an outrageous sum, the corporations began the design and construction of battle droids for the Sith Empire. Inspired by the use of battle droids in the Republic armies not long ago, the Sith reasoned it would an ideal way to circumvent their shortage of soldiers.
Early in droids’ conception, many of the Sith officials who had brokered the deals come under political attack. Now lacking the funding to properly deal with such aggressions, many were forced out of the governing bodies, whilst others simply disappeared. It was in the investigation of one of these disappearances that the battle droid deal was brought to the attention of the greater whole.
Under the more formal support of the Sith, the battle droids began their final stages of development. Designed as weapons of intimidation, the droids were made to be relatively simple and inexpensive so as to allow for great numbers of them to take to any battlefield. Their design was primarily motivated by a team of Neimoidian engineers who designed the droids to resemble their own kind when deceased. The idea was to have legions of skeletal soldiers marching in untold numbers towards any opposition - a sight the aristocratic overseers found fitting.
But, due primarily to the limited space such a skeletal, and thus, thin, frame allowed, the droids were not capable of very much individually. The power cores and processor units for their simple motor functions dominated their construction, and although they were fairly capable, they were unimaginative and inept without direct command. The technologies required to grant them battlefield tactical decision making were simply too expensive to employ in such numbers, so a small number were designed to act as battlefield commanders. These few, far more valuable droids were programmed with a staggering array of complex information, resulting in highly capable, if occasionally unimaginative, command capabilities.
Attempts were made to develop piloting droids to man starships and infantry support weapons such as tanks or dropships, but it was found that the complex knowledge required for such tasks could not be affordably built into such limiting chassis, and so none were initially produced. Additionally, the concept of built in weapons was scrapped for funding reasons, and more flexible, all-purpose “hands” were substituted, allowing the droids to take advantage of existing weapon stocks with no additional cost.
Though favoured by Sith officials, the droids won no respect in the military ranks, especially the idea of the droid officers, and Sith troopers chafed at the idea of being ordered by machines, so the decision was made to keep the droid military wing ostensibly separate from the rest of the army.
SDO 07 (Sith Droid Officer #7) was designated on the unimaginative basis of his construction (he was the seventh built), and was placed in command of the Seventh Droid Infantry Battalion.
During opening trials, the droids performed poorly without instruction, relying heavily on the commands of the officer droids for any reliable capabilities, and so the situation was made to decrease the officer to soldier ratio. Now in command of only 100 SDSs (Sith Droid Soldiers), the performance increased considerable for the droid armies.
Eager to see them in combat, the Sith aristocrats used them in a skirmish against pirate elements troubling nearby Sith shipping lanes, with great success. The simplistic design of the droids allowed for the vast majority of the fallen to be reused, affording minimal loss.
Eager to apply the new troops to more varied environments, the Sith took it upon themselves to secure the blueprints for the droids, much to the anger of the Crime Lords. In an act of petty anger, the information for the construction of the officer droids was destroyed before it could be stolen, and later attempts to reconstruct them by Sith engineers resulted in inferior quality, though still serviceable and useful, officers. The inferior, later models were designated as a kind of lower officer, whilst the more complex original officers became overall commanders.
In the coming years the production of the droids would slow immensely in response to the increase in bickering and quarreling amongst the higher-ups, and due primarily to the prevalence of other matters, the droid army was larger set aside for future use.
Despite this, the programming initiatives in the SDOs led them to engage renegade factions on numerous, small scale occasions. Their inability to operate complex machinery and starships, with the possible exceptions of the already over-taxed SDOs, the droids were limited in their mobility to where their masters sent them.
The fractional nature of the upper-classes of the Sith also confused the droids, as they were programmed to be slaved to their officers, who were to received orders only from the upper echelons of the Sith. When they received conflicting orders, or even ordered to engage other Sith forces, the droids simply refused as a default, unsure of where the military focus was, and thus, who to defer to. This earned them little favour from the ambitious Generals and Admirals, each who wanted the armies for themselves.
It was under such circumstances that SDO 07 found itself whilst on the planet Tatooine, ordered to engage the meager forces of two different Sith Colonels, each by the other. So SDO 07 ordered the retreat of the droids into their landing crafts, to be ready for departure, registering but not understanding the angers of the two ranking officers. Unsure of it’s course of action, the droid had the army, some 1000 droids led by 10 sub-officers (designated SDSOs) simply refused to act. The bickering officers turned their scorn against the simple-minded battle droids and departed, leaving the droids in the heat and sand.
Understanding only military matters, SDO 07 ordered the army to march in search of a space port where they might return to the command of the greater Sith army.
