I hope this will prove to be helpful for any members out there who are looking to get onto the staffing ladder, whether it is for the first time or specifically for this site.
I know how many people feel, like you want to be involved in supporting the site you’ve come to enjoy. I understand that; I felt exactly the same when I first joined. But sadly only a select few can become staff members, in order to ensure there is a balance maintained across the board. Now, I’m not going to decorate the positions with flowers and cake because it takes a lot of time, effort and patience to reach the ranks of the staff, and once you’re there you still have to put a fair deal into the site. But, if you really want to contribute, to help out and become part of the team then here are a few things that we look for in potential staff members.
First and foremost, your tendency and determination to look over profiles will be the most important aspect. Even as a member we push you to make comments on profiles started by your peers. Your duties as part of the Next Gen Team or even as a Mod will primarily comes down to looking over profiles, so if we don’t know if you can go over them thoroughly then promoting you would be a risk we aren't looking to take. Now, of course, we’re not expecting you to be brilliant at application reviews since you have to start somewhere. So long as we see you’re progressing in your reviews by taking on board what the staff have said, should their reviews oppose some of the thing that you had mentioned. This would still put you in a good position should we be considering expanding the number of members in the Next Gen Team.
Now on to some minor, yet still very important, aspects that we consider. Whilst the primary duty of the NGT and Mods is to go over profiles, there are still a number of questions which will be asked across the board. Often the staff can be preoccupied and not able to respond swiftly, if you step in and respond to the member’s question, answering it as best as you can or recommending some ways to find out what the answer would be, then this would also serve as a good trait when we consider possible promotions. Also, don’t think this is just limited to the board, often people will ask questions in the chat-box, the same applies here as it does for a question put forward through a post. Generally being helpful also slides into this category, for example simple things like pointing someone to an information thread they are struggling to find or a thread which might interest their roleplaying needs.
Also, your attitude on SWU is important. We don’t want a staff team made up of arrogant and immature children, we want people who are mature, manage to keep a cool head and also are kind to those around them. Bickering and name-calling is not healthy for the forum when it’s between two members, imagine what it would be like if the staff acted the same. However, remaining calm and mature doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun as you’ve no doubt seen that myself and other members of the staff enjoy talking and joking with one another. You just have to remember that being apart of this forum, and in particular the staff, means that you are representing us to potential members and the rest of the internet, so make sure there are lines you do not cross.
Don’t think we just want mindless drones on the team either, we like to see people who bring fresh new ideas for us to debate and consider, as we are a site which is always looking to grow and improve. However, just make sure you can voice these opinions and ideas in a way that won’t make it seem as though you are simply slandering the current system, or people, around which your views are being stated. Clear, considerate and positive views are what we welcome and look for.
Finally, of course, we take your activity into consideration, if you’re on once every two weeks then that is not going to give you enough time to moderate your section and the board. Being on everyday is a big help, but we do have staff who can only get on during weekdays and, so long as we know, we can factor this into our decision. When it comes to absences we simply ask that you try and tell us, by either private messages or the farewell section of the board.
So briefly here’s the list of things we would see a reason to consider you for promotion:
1. Spends time and effort reviewing and learning how to help in the application process.
2. Answers questions across the board and chat box in a positive manner.
3. Being generally helpful.
4. Maintaining a positive and helpful attitude.
5. Willing to contribute to and suggest ideas.
6. Being as active as possible
