(For the diagnosis please read post seven of The Moments That Make You) With a firm nod Vreem got up from his chair, the place that had practically been his home for two weeks. His hand glanced across his chin; the usually smooth stretch of skin was now masked with an unshaven stubble that didn’t suit him in the slightest. As he walked slowly out of the room he glanced once more to the Grand Master as she lay in the bed, peace still possessed her expression. Before heading to the Council Chamber, Vreem went to ready himself. This was an important event; he would have to look presentable at least. After a wash, shave and change of robes, he was ready to go before the Council, for the first time since his return from Korriban. * * * “… but the doctors estimate years, if she will come out of it at all.” Vreem finished from his seat. He had just reiterated to them all the condition of their Grand Master. They had all been informed of the results about a week ago, but it was important that their minds be refreshed for the current topic of discussion he was about to raise. It had been probably close to a month, maybe more, since he’d last sat in the chair he currently occupied, he still had yet to report on his excursion to Korriban and the discovery of the Sith. The importance of the topics which were to be raised in this meeting had been enough for Vreem and Jace to call in all members of the Council for session, and the chamber would not be admitting any other Jedi until they were done with their discussion. After they were done, Vreem doubted that things would be the same again for a long time. His fear of returning before them had dissolved somewhat as he walked through the doors, Jace at his side. They sat gathered, ten of, supposedly, the wisest and most powerful of the Order, ready to pull all the Jedi in the galaxy into a new direction, preparation for war. Two of the twelve seats were vacant, Grand Master Eris’ and the Battlemaster’s, which they still had not filled even after months of it being open. No matter how members of the Council might try and deliberate, Vreem knew that the Sith would be planning a way to try and lay claim over the galaxy. He had been able to gather that much from the gleam in Jahn’s eyes when they’d fought. “It’s been two weeks now since I returned and two weeks since Grand Master Eris collapsed in the presence of myself and Master Beleran. My report still needs to be presented to you all, but I can not do so if there is not someone to direct our discussion, or I fear we will not get very far. Whilst I pray by the Force that Master Eris wakes up soon, there is still the strongest possibility that she will not. Only those of us present, a few healers and some of the Republic doctors, know about her condition. I move that we elect a new Grand Master in order to make sure that we can make true progress against the tasks and challenges which await us. We need someone strong and wise so that we can maintain peace throughout the galaxy.” Pausing for a moment Vreem looked around at the Masters in the room, the fire in his eyes which had sparked to life in Eris’ presence was still burning strong now. Finally his eyes met Jace’s and he spoke again, firmly. “I believe that Master Beleran should be the one to lead us. He has shown a great deal of strength and wisdom in the Force and has proven his ability to lead and teach. Compared to many of you he may be young, but remember Master Eris, she was younger still and yet she did so much good for the Order. Thus I think that Master Beleran should assume the title of Grand Master.” With a small sigh Vreem sank backwards into his chair. Now it was open to the floor, questions, concerns, nominations, anything could be laid out before them now. Who knew how things could go now.

“What?”Rhissai blinked at this new turn of events. That moment was one of the very few times in the woman's life when those well pronounced and executed lines of dialog refused to flow out of her mouth. A confused sounding “what” replaced those big words and deep sentences quite easily. So then were did this leave the Order? How would they recover? Who would rise up to replace the void that was left as Eris slipped into her coma? Those thoughts and more crossed her mind briefly... but all in all the Aphithiri woman found that few thoughts could flash across her mind's eye. It took a few seconds, but soon enough the “elderly” woman was able to think clearly. In truth she did not know Eris as much as she would have liked, and she most certainly did not know the woman on a personal level... even though she saw her on a near daily basis. That fact made Rhiss' heart a little heavier than it was before. ****************************** It seemed that the woman's heart grew a little heavier each time she heard of the Grand Master's condition. The Force most certainly did work in mysterious ways: This happened at the same time a particularly thick fog rolled in and clouded her vision. For some reason the woman suspected that there was more to this than met the eye. Many a terrible deed has been committed with the Dark Side of the Force, she hoped (and prayed) that her suspicions were unfounded. The Dark Side: It could be a terrible foe... yet at times a powerful ally, or rather the powers associated with it. Often times she found that the use of lightning immobilized her foes long enough to subdue them and in extreme cases it was powerful enough to end a foe. Though it seemed that every time she did use this “power” it tended to sow remorse in her heart. What was that old saying? You reap what you sow? That was why she rarely used the “powers” of the Dark Side... that and they tended to not be well received by the common folk of the Galaxy. The woman shook her head, though it was only a little shake it managed to throw off those useless musings. Rhiss had to focus on the tasks at hand, not have an internal dialog on the use of the Dark Side powers. The Aphithiri woman's fingers instinctively moved to lightly drape across her mouth and lower face at the mention of a the council electing a new Grand Master. Her mind was scanning though possibilities... eventually she wandered over to herself as a possible candidate. No. She would never accept that office, even if the Council did elect her to it: not only was she not suited to wards the position but she feared that her anchor to the light was not strong enough to warrant that appointment. Then who? Who was wise enough to hold the office, yet powerful enough to fend off the coming darkness? Jace. Not only was he one of her few friends but he was as wise as he was powerful. Far wiser and stronger than she could ever hope to be, despite the fact that he was nearly fifteen years younger. Rhissai leaned forward and drew in a deep breath in preparation to speak, but it seemed that Vreem beat her to the punch. The woman leaned back in her chair and nodded ever so slightly as her peer spoke his peace. Just as he was done talking the woman shifted her fiery green gaze over the masters who sat around her, spending about a second peering into each of their eyes... finally ending by letting her bright emerald gaze rest on Jace. “I agree with Master Took. In all the years that I have known Master Beleran he has been a great teacher and an even better leader. I believe that his time combating the Dark Side as a Shadow have more than prepared him for what is about to be asked of him... and by extension the Order. I can think of no better person to fill the void that Grand Master Eris has left.”

Master Soka sighed a heavy sigh. He was filled with remorse over the "loss" of Eris. She had served the order well, he had not known her personally on any level, but their brief interactions on the council spoke volumes about her character and ability. Now the order had to move on. Part of being a Jedi was not milling over events that were not in your control. Her condition is what it is and he could do nothing for her. Soka calmed his mind and let her go. She was now a memory. His stoic character was notable, some almost felt him heartless for his ability to let such things go, but he knew nothing could be done about it. The order had to continue, as he would have to continue. Soka left the medical chambers, he had to prepare for he knew the other masters would also seek to act quickly. The order could not be left leaderless for long. He would meditate on the events as long as he could, then prepare himself for another gathering of the council. * * * Master Soka walked into the chambers of the council after a quick hiss as the doors opened for him. He bowed from the hips for a few moments to all in the room and moved to his seat. He knew he could not say much on the matter but, he would do his best in his advisory role to the council. It seemed fewer and fewer masters gathered for these council meetings, a fact that bothered him. The order was vulnerable at this moment, without leadership and a severely lacking council. If the weakness of the order continued for long, its enemies would surely take advantage of it. No, he had to calm his mind, focus on the task at hand. There would be a new Grand Master selected from the gathered masters. He knew he would not be the Grand Master, nor did he feel fit for it. He had so much more to learn before he could step into such a role. He scanned the gathered masters, and meditated for a few moments, letting the force flow through him and help guide his decision. He concentrated hard and let his mind be a vessel of the force, this intense concentration and flow of force in such a short time came easy to him, due to the years of doing this before battles and trainings, where it was extremely necessary to do so quickly. Suddenly a single person became very clear in his mind - Master Beleran. It seemed that his sentiments had been shared by two others. Perhaps this was where the force was guiding the council. Content in the knowledge that the force was guiding him he said, "I would also advise Master Beleran to be the Grand Master. I believe this is where the force is guiding this council".

Rising from his seat as Vreem had done moments before, he made his way back to his quarters. If they were to go before the council, for such an important decision, he needed to freshen up. He made his way to the refresher, the cold water slowly bringing energy back to him. He looked up at the mirror, wondering if he should shave, but decided against it. He had always had a stubble, no reason he should change that now. He made his way from his quarters and back to the medical bay one last time for that day. Jace looked upon the comatose figure of the current Grandmaster once more before heading to the council. He wasn't sure why he had felt the need to do so, but he didn't question. May the Force be with you, Grandmaster -----------------------
He sat in his usual chair, leaning back, as he listened to Vreem's report on Eris's condition. Though he had heard it many times before, it still had an effect on him. Each of the masters had dealt with the news in their own way. It had been odd for Jace, he had almost become numb to feeling, for he assumed it was the best path to take. For the first time, in a very long time, he had actually felt something profound and it unsettled him. There were other matters that needed dealing with, and Jace had decided to move on days ago. He looked at the other members of the council, they all knew what had to be done. There was no doubt in their eyes, maybe this was their first true step on the journey ahead. As he looked around the council chamber, his vision seemed to focus on two people. The strong and compassionate Rhissai, and the wise and powerful Vreem. Jace didn't have many friends, and these were two of his closest ones. He was about to begin reminiscing when Vreem's voice reminded him that there were more pressing things at hand. He quickly summed up the current situation, for which many had reached the same conclusion. He then, just as he did in the medical bay, nominate Jace for the position of Grandmaster. He was soon followed by Rhissai's and Atu Soka's nominations who were both for Jace. Jace was slightly overwhelmed, which was a rare feeling for him. The last time he had felt like this, was when he was asked to be a member of the council. He was seated with some of the strongest Jedi of his generation, and possibly history, and they were nominating him for the position of Grandmaster. Jace was not a proud man, but even he could not downplay the honor of these nominations. Moments after, the rest of the council members nominated Jace for the position of grandmaster. Finally after every member had spoken their part, did Jace finally stand up. "It is with great honor that I will accept this position as Grandmaster of the Jedi Order. I pray that the Force will guide all of us in these coming times. I also motion that we make Atu Soka a permanent member of this council. He has been unwavering in his duty and loyalty to the Jedi Order." He paused for a few moments, and not hearing any objections, he proceeded. "For those of you that remember, myself and a group of other Jedi, traveled to Korriban not too long ago. Master Took also accompanied us, and he has uncovered something which will undoubtedly be our focus for the coming days. It is now, that I call upon Master Took to speak his part"
Jace motioned with his hand towards Vreem, and then sat down in his chair. This would be the true crux of the council's deliberations for days to come. For the fate of the Order would without a doubt, be decided within this very chamber. They would need wisdom, power, and most importantly, unity to battle the coming darkness.

Vreem was satisfied with the way things were proceeding, there had been no hiccups in their move to have Jace take the position of Grand Master. It had only taken a few exchanges of words, but the impact it would have upon the play of things would be gigantic. Vreem was glad to see his friend quickly slip into the role of leader, making quick decisions, appointing Master Soka was quite an important move, right now the Council was lacking members in two seats and with Master Soka holding only an advisory position they had been quite a distance from full strength. No doubt Jace would have a fun time looking for two other members to fill the seats that remained vacant.
Almost as swiftly, Vreem was being called on to make his report, the moment of truth. He was about to deliver a message that would have a major impact upon all of the Council, the entire Order. Vreem got up from his chair and bowed his head towards Jace. He stepped towards the middle of the chamber. “Thank you, Grand Master.” He started seriously. “As Master Beleran mentioned, a small group of us headed to Korriban to investigate the tombs there. However, we succumbed to the trap left within the tomb and were incapacitated for a time. During that time a group of Dark Jedi discovered our presence and waited for us outside of the tomb. When I awoke the two Knights accompanying us had rushed out to hold the Dark Jedi at bay. They were strong and outnumbered the two Knights, but our mission was an important one so I went to assist them whilst Master Beleran continued with the search. We lost one of the Knights before I could get there and as I was fighting the other managed to best his opponent but was deeply injured in the process. He retreated to the tomb just as Master Beleran returned. However, with only two able bodied members of the group remaining and an injured Knight there was little hope we would make it to the ship without being cut down.” Vreem paused, for the moment he was reiterating something they had probably heard about from Jace a while ago, but he covered it nonetheless.
“I made a call to stay behind and serve as a distraction so that Master Beleran and Jedi Knight Ryn Sundar could escape in one piece. They were able to do so and I managed to distract all four Dark Jedi so that I could escape. I believe I must have caused them some damage as they did not proceed to chase after me.” It was now that the following events would be recalled, events that the Council did not know about. “After that I spent days wandering and trying to recover. I followed the flow of the Force as best as I could until eventually I heard a ship fly overhead and land nearby to the narrow valley I was in. As approached the ship I could sense a dark and familiar presence. The man who came out to meet me was Jahn Minraun, a Jedi Knight of our Order whom I had once worked with extensively on a mission to Kashyyyk where we freed many of the local population who were under the thumb of slavers. When I met him upon Korriban his presence was much darker than it had previously been before, I sensed malice within him, the Dark Side.”
“However,” he continued, “he did not feel like any Dark Jedi I had come across previously, there was something more primal about his presence, something far darker. He seemed intend to fight me, my words could not deter his blade and so I defended myself. I managed to best him but I was quite shocked by the rate at which the Dark Side had strengthened his powers. Again it was nothing like I’d ever seen before. Most frightful of all his powers seemed new and mostly untrained. I questioned him extensively after that and he revealed to me a shocking truth. He claimed to be a Sith. Although I did not want to believe his words, I could sense that what he said was the truth. He claimed that they had returned and that he was the Dark Overlord. But I don’t think this is true, like I said, his powers were still new, raw and untrained. I’ve come to the belief that Jahn, or Veratos as he called himself, is under direction of someone else, another Sith who is teaching Jahn these powers.” Stopping for a few moments Vreem let the Council absorb what he had said, the fact of the matter was that most of them would probably not believe that the Sith had returned, but he fought with Jahn, he had sensed that pure darkness within his former brother in arms and he would make this Council see the truth.
“I know many of you might find this hard to believe,” he said, trying to address their concern, “but you have all felt the growing darkness, how it has started to cloud the Force. Upon my return I contacted the Republic and requested them to send out a number of scouts to the Outer Rim, we are severely lacking information about this threat, whether you believe that it’s the Sith or not. We don’t know how many they number, who leads them and what their intentions are. There have been recordings of unusual movements amongst the Dark Jedi from one of the contacts and they should hopefully be returning soon with the information collected.”
“We need to discuss what must be done about this threat, if the Sith are in a position of power then we will need to be prepared to face them when we discover the truth or when they reveal themselves. Members of the Council, we have been presented with what I believe is a very serious and real threat, and I believe we need to take actions to make sure we are not caught with our guard down.” Vreem finished his little report solemnly and froze on the spot for a few moments before returning to his seat and opening up the floor.

Master Rhissai'arckan gave but the slightest of nods as Jace moved to appoint Master Soka to more permanent position on the council. The Aphithiri woman didn't say a word for or against the man's ascension to full council member, none was needed. She gave but a cursory glance to the man before shifting it back to Grandmaster Beleren. Grandmaster Beleren. That sounded different... almost off. She remembered back to when she first met the man, then simply Master Beleren, and smiled slightly. He had always been a friend to her... and more-often-than-not a boon to the lightside. If it weren't for him it was likely that she would have fallen long ago.
Rhissai's smile quickly vanished at the mention of the recent mission to Korriban. There was always something mischievous playing about on that planet, the Dark Side was incredibly strong there. Many people called it the Dark Side's homeworld... though this notion was wrong in every sense of the word. The only home that the Dark Side ever had was in the hearts and minds of Force Users, every single one had to bear the burden (and temptations) that it almost constantly brought forth. Korriban may have been, to be more precise, the first place where Force Users gave into the Dark Side. That notion was far more plausible. The woman shook her head slightly, now was not the time for musings.
The woman nodded as she heard her peer reiterate the events of the said mission, it was truly a sad thing: so much senseless death. One Jedi dead, one grievously wounded, another left behind in that tomb, and for what? What was gained from that mission? She was about to find out: Information. While she would not have traded the lives of the two dead jedi for it, she would not spit on their memory by turning a deaf ear towards it. She listened to Vreem as he related the events of what happened between him and this... Darth Veratos... to the Council.
This was, indeed, disturbing news.
To say the least.
The fact that there was another more powerful man pulling the strings did not surprise Rhissai all that much: If it was one thing that the Sith were good at it was revealing themselves at the right time. Which meant that they probably had more than just that single man running the religion. The Cult. The master did believe that this Veratos was telling the truth, and that action must be taken. After a few long moments she shifted her emerald gaze about the room, drifting it lazily across the other nine beings in the room before letting it settle on Master Took.
“I, for one, believe that this Jahn, or Darth Veratos as he calls himself, is telling no lie.”
She paused for a brief moment to allow the Council members to register that she spoke. The woman took this time to straighten out her back and sit up in the chair. Rhiss may as well look like she is trying to get a serious point across.
“After all that is going on in the Galaxy how can one think any different? The fog of the Dark Side that has clouded the Force as of late, the sharp increase in the Dark Jedi ranks, the... fate... of Master Eris, and this revelation are all no coincidence. I do believe that the Sith are, in fact, returning. When the Sith do reveal themselves to the Galaxy it will be no subtle thing. It will be something grand, unmistakable, and irrefutable. This is always as it has been in the past. The Sith have had at least three hundred years to think of such a grand assault, so trying to stop their opening move would most likely be futile.”
The Jedi master paused briefly to let her opinion sink in with her fellow council members before breathing in deeply in preparation to speak again.
“It is very likely, in my opinion, that the Sith will be attempting to take control of their Empire that bears their name and use it as a conduit for even more heinous attacks against the Republic and the Jedi. That said, I believe that we must move Jedi to defend the Republic's more critical planets in the Outer Rim... like Mon Calamari. Yes, I know, we are not soldiers... but we are protectors. Guardians. Paladins of civilization. And to not move Jedi to crucial planets would be irresponsible. Neg, it would not be irresponsible, it would be moronic.”
The inner fire of her passion began to break through her stoic facade towards the end of her address to the Council. She had faced many wars during her short time on Aphithir, far too many to count, and she could almost sense when war was coming. It was a certain tension in the air, a vibe of sorts.. almost tangible. To her at least.
And War? It was most certainly coming.

Master Soka nodded and gave a small smile, it was usually against him to show such emotion but he could not help it. His gratitude was limited however, for he knew the responsibilities of the position especially in these times. He had long sensed this occurrence, it was why he had returned to the order from exile and came back to the council. He sighed heavily as realities of this moment were realized. The word had not been said, but its implications were high. Soldiers, preliminary movements. These were the words, the ideas of war. If their was war, he would have to participate. He had perfected Battle Meditation and had spent his life studying the arts of combat. Since he would likely play such a vital role, he wanted to make sure that he was fully prepared, and that the order as a whole was prepared.
"Before we can opt to do anything that might alert this new threat that we have discovered them, we must first assess the situation properly. We do not want to be falling prey to some greater plot. I would advise we send scouts first, to scope out the fringes of the Republic space to determine the strengths and locations of this new threat. Plus, we would not want to draw the galaxy into a war if the Sith are only concerned with attacking us. That would be irresponsible. We may learn of the consequences of that from the past."
He was calm, he always acted as more of an observer than one actually involved in things. He accepted them and moved on. This potential war was simply another reality that he would have to adjust to. He definitely did not want war. He had long hoped he would never have to employ his battle skills but now that was looking to be the stark reality of things.

Though he had heard Vreem's story many times already, he listened carefully. He not only listened, but his eyes scanned the room, gauging the reaction of each council member. He bowed his head respectfully at the mention of the fallen and injured knights. It had been a very steep price to pay for the information they obtained. His mind traced back to when the council had ordered that he not go alone. He could not blame them though, for was he not the one who hand picked the Jedi who were to come?
Vreem once again reiterated his view, just as he had made that fateful night, two weeks ago. He finally sat down after outlining the entire situation to the council. The mention of the returning Sith garnered a variety of reactions, though none unexpected. Incredulity, surprise, resignation, and expectation inhibited the current atmosphere. He wasn't surprised when Rhissai was the first one to speak after Vreem. He had long ago learned to make sure to listen to her counsel carefully. She voiced her opinion quite strongly, and it held merit. Though Jace tended to agree with her and Vreem, caution was needed. Too often was the line between soldier and protector crossed by the Jedi.
Master Soka then spoke his part, and he seemed to be of the same mind as Jace and many of the council. There seemed to be a genuine consent that they needed to take some sort of proactive step. Oddly enough, Jace had been advocating this same line of thought for quite sometime. The shadow in him told him that evil does not wait, and eventually must be dealt with directly. He heard many of the other council members opinions, most of which reflected the previous three. There were one or two who were skeptical, but that was expected. He waited a few moments, letting all the information and opinions sink in.
"The consensus suggests that we must act in some sort of capacity. Whether it be scouting or strategic placement of our resources. While I don't have to tell any of you, the line between a soldier and guardian can be quite thin. Though we all know this, it is also easy to forget, it has happened many times. I want you all to keep this in the back of your mind, do not forget who we are and what our duty to the galaxy is.
That being said, we must now take a step forward. We must give people a guiding light which to follow in this time of darkness. Our first step will be to send out scouting parties throughout the galaxy, particularly the Outer Rim. In sending out scouting missions, we will also be placing Jedi all over the galaxy. We will create a network of information that will act as our guide for many decisions.
Coordination with the Republic will also be needed if we are to efficient in our information of gathering. Planning for possible attacks and evacuation scenarios may also be a wise precaution. I have no doubt that when the Sith strike, it will be hard and fast. If as Master Rhissai has said, they usurp the current Sith Empire, they will become quite powerful. They have the upper hand at the moment, we must move to even the table."
If Jace had ever given thought to being elected Grand master, he wouldn't have thought it would be in such a situation. He knew they needed to be decisive but at the same time, not reckless. Jace had been pondering this very situation since he had learned of it from Vreem. Everytime he did, he came to the same conclusion, they must act now.

“We must be careful with our movements, that is for certain.” Vreem stated after a few of the other masters had passed comment. “I believe we have to be careful Master Rhissai, that we approach this with a clear mind. Intentionally placing Jedi to defend planets sounds as if we’re supporting and enforcing the idea that the Jedi should be involved in war, even though there has yet to be one. We have yet to even decide if this council would go to war if one were to start, many would argue that it violates our own code to make such aggressive acts. I am not saying that I support this view, it’s just, with my time on the Council I’ve come to understand that we need to consider all the different views members of this Order may have, even if they are not our own.”
“As I have already stated, I have already acted to some degree before this meeting, I felt that there were matters at hand which could not wait. I spoke to some of my contacts within the Republic Intelligence Department and told them that we expected the Sith Empire may be up to something and also that we were under the belief that some Dark Jedi may be under the influence of the Empire. A number of Republic operatives were dispatched to increase the numbers on the Outer Rim. If I am to be reprimanded for my actions then I accept what may come, however I did so under the belief that the sooner we could require information of any sort the more we would be able to prepare in case the Council came to the decision it has. I believe I was within my rights to act as I did, though I leave that decision to the Council.” Vreem spoke with the fluency of someone who had become accustomed with their position on the High Council; many of the Masters could be quite strict with any form of action.
“I do agree that we should dispatch Jedi to require information. And if we were to send Jedi to key locations we would expect an attack at I believe it would be best that we send them to worlds as if they are on some sort of long-term mission, until we feel we can act with a more definite goal.” Vreem thought to his masters, Kel and Grahn, and how they would greet this news with joy and glee, a possible way for there to be a power to resist the Republic and the Jedi, so that it might even become a threat to the existence of both factions. Of course, the Jedi Masters of old would have most likely regarded Vreem’s actions with scorn, they were often very set in their ways and when he had spoken about those ‘different members of the Order’ his thoughts had been of them, those who sought to avoid war at all costs. Such decisions had been made during the Mandalorian Wars, would there be a repeat now, hundreds of years later? Vreem could only hope not, the Council seemed to mostly believe that they needed some form of action, splitting the Order in two would only serve the Sith and further weaken the Jedi’s position.
Vreem currently did not want to further the beliefs of the reoccurring few until they had stopped to consider other views, they were Jedi and it was required for them to do so in the name of honesty and fairness, two things which could quite easily get in their way and prevent them from doing as they wished so very quickly. Fortunately there were only twelve seats on this Council, so it was far less troubling than the Senate. But still, democracy had its failings, time was one of them.

The Jedi master was somewhat stunned yet knew that he really shouldn't be. Vreem had spoken and unknowingly or not, had made his position quite clear if there was a war to come. Jace was surprised that his friend had already made his decision on the matter. Sure, each council member had considered the idea but how many were knew with absolute certainty knew what path they would choose?Though when he thought about his friend, he should have realized that this would be his answer.
In truth, Jace was worried about Vreem. The man had joined him on Korriban, a nexus of the darkside. He had battled a powerful Dark Jedi foe, and then encountered another from his past claiming to be a Sith. Through all this he had persevered, turning away from the dark path that he once walked. This should have been enough to placate Jace, but he knew the darkside was ever persistent. If Vreem went to war and killed, it could be exponentially more dangerous than traveling to Korriban and fighting a Sith. Had it not happened to Revan and the hundreds that followed him? What is to say that anything would be different if the same thing happened again?
No, he could not afford to doubt those whom he called friends, especially other Council members. Doubt is what would divide them, it is what made those of the darkside so weak. The Sith of old fought among each other, always trying to assume the mantle of power. He had to trust in those that sat in this room with him, and all the Jedi that were spread throughout the galaxy. He would trust in Vreem's decision to take proactive steps, they were of a more passive manner anyways.
Jace was about to address Vreem's points when he felt an unfamiliar presence approaching the chamber. The doors slid open, revealing a impeccably dressed Republic officer. Approaching the center of the room, the man snapped off a quick salute and then stood at attention. The military had mixed views about the Jedi that ranged from hate to adoration. They were either a military asset, a roadblock, or valued allies. It seemed that this was one of the soldiers who viewed them as friends and allies rather than just some asset.
"Sir, I have an urgent report from Admiral Hestia"
The Jedi merely nodded, Admiral Hestia was a staunch ally of the Jedi in the military. Unlike many of her peers, she went out of her way to make the Jedi were kept informed. Jace had personally organized many successful cooperative missions with her troops.
Jedi High Council,The Sith Empire has struck again. They have attacked Mon Calamari and Mygeeto simultaneously. Reports indicate that Mygeeto has been lost to the Empire. The Sith Empire had retreated from the battle of Mon Calamari but returned for a second strike, Mon Calamari has been lost. It is highly likely that they will strike again. Republic forces have been put on the highest alert. That is all for now, will keep updated.
Naval High Command, Admiral Hestia
The Grandmaster nodded once more as the Republic officer snapped off a smart salute and left the chambers. The silence was almost palpable, each member digesting what they had just heard. Jace had no doubt that the Republic would be going to war. The Sith Empire had made its position clear when they attacked an important Republic planet such as Mon Calamari. They had been quiet since Dantooine but it had only been a matter of time.
There would no doubt be an emergency meeting of the senate this day. The Senate would gather and make the decision for the rest of the Republic. The Jedi High Council would have to do much of the same, though most likely not as quickly. Jace suddenly felt the great weight of being a High council member, no, Grandmaster of the Order. He could not allow such pressure to get to him, it would cloud his perception.
The Jedi did not like this one bit, too much seemed to be coming down to coincidence and there was no coincidence when the Force was involved. First Dantooine, then the possible return of the Sith, and now an attack on the Republic. Vreem had stated that possibly Dark Jedi were being influenced by the Sith Empire. Jace was getting a feeling that it might be the other way around. The Jedi Master remained silent in thought, he waited to see what the others in the council had to say.

Another meeting, another discussion. Things as usual in the Jedi Council Chamber- but this topic was by far the most important the Council had faced since the crowning of a new Grandmaster. The elder Mon Cal's eyes crossed the room, old friends and allies all around him. Council meetings always pleased him for this exact reason- though the topic was heavy on his heart. The Master Jedi watched in silence as his allies talked, leaning back in his seat and stroking at the whiskers that hung off his face with one hand. The Jedi was Sage Master Ozzril Ackbar, one of the eldest members of the Council, as well as the man in charge of the Youngling's training. Ozzril participated in these meetings as he fought, waiting patiently, being sure to take in every detail before acting.
The thought of a war did not please Ozzril at all, nothing good could ever come out of it. He took in each Master's input, one by one. The Jedi could see all of their points, but there was a few things none of them brought up yet. Just as he was about to finally speak, the Military messenger came in. No... was all the elder man thought as he heard the news. Yes, the taking of Mygeeto was terrible to hear, but to also hear that his own planet had been sacked, was something he had not expected. Cold depression sank into Ozzril's stomach for a brief second before he recomposed himself. A low, guttural sigh slipped from Ozzril's lips, his tone weary and saddened. He inhaled slowly before pushing the thought aside, and focused on the task at hand. Ozzril leaned forward and placed his hands together, his elbows resting on his knees before saying
"I have been reluctant to speak on this matter... We all know that a war can not bring anything good to the Republic. And that as Jedi, we must protect it's citizens, not fight for them- there is a difference. We have seen time and again that when Jedi go to war- not all die or return as Jedi anymore. And to spread ourselves all across the galaxy may not be the best move. To leave Coruscant unprotected could lead to an even greater catastrophe. Who's to say that this isn't what the enemy wants? To separate the Jedi from the Core?
And what of the Temple? If we dispatch Jedi across the galaxy, that severely cripples our ability to protect our home- the loss of the Temple would be devastating. Not to mention the Younglings. Losing the next generation of Jedi could cause irreparable harm. I however, do not have anything to suggest at this moment, but these other factors must be considered before making a decision. But I must meditate on the matter... see if the Force can direct me. What say you Beleren?"
After he spoke, Ozzril kept his hands together but leaned back into his chair, certain his words struck home. Let us hope we're not all about to make a terrible mistake... Thought the Jedi as he closed his eyes slowly and let them remain, simply listening to his fellow Masters.

The woman mentally winced at Vreem's opening statement, for her words did have a little bit more of a bite than she expected. She had not meant to insinuate that opinnions of the other Jedi Masters were wrong, or idiotic (though she essentially stated such), but she instead simply meant to say that doing nothing in response to this news would be irresponsible. Bright green eyes slid closed as she listened to the rest of Master Took's address to the council, she did not blame him in the least for his actions. She would have done them herself if she'd have thought of it.
An odd sense of foreboding entered into the woman's heart a few moments after Vreem had finished his statement. The twisting in her gut that told her something was amiss about the galaxy, and that she was but a few heartbeats away from learning something terrible had occured. Then the officer dressed up in his boldly colored dress uniform appeared through the door. The raven haired woman held her breath as the news came in.
Mygeeto had fallen to Sith Empire aggressors. Imperial forces were occupying Mon Calamari. The woman simply sat there in silence, finding that the words, "... by the Force..." were the only ones that could flash across her mind's eye. Those emerald eyes of her slowly slid open and looked about the circular room of the High Council Chambers, observing the face of each and ever high council man and woman until they rested on Master Ackbar. Mon Calamari was his homeworld, and though attachements were generally forbidden, every single Jedi held at least some kind of attachment to the planet of their birth.
Rhissai soaked in all of Ozzril's words like a sponge, thinking heavily on each and every syllable, valuing each rise in pitch and tone as if it were gold. In her short tenure as member of the High Council she had learned to value the wisened old Mon Calamari Jedi Master, despite the fact that he was five years younger than herself. While she was sixty, she was still considered young by Aphithiri standards, and it seemed it was that very youth that seemed to get the better of her at times. She shifted in her seat, leaned forward, and clasped her hands together. The black haired woman's words were heavy, almost as if she carried a great weight on her shoulders, and it pained her to speak. The woman gazed down into her clasped hands for a few moments before looking up at Ozzril.
"If we cloister ourselves up within the Temple and enclaves than that only ensures that we will be attacked if the Sith Empire ever make it far enough into the galaxy to reach our enclaves. We can either sit by and allow the Empire to attack or take a more... proactive... approach and ensure that the Sith never make it to our home, or the younglings."
She paused for a moment, allowing the masters a chance to think on her words but not speak on them just yet. The floor was still hers.
"Masters... friends... mentors... peers, I realize that my former statement may have sounded like I wish for a war for the Jedi to enter. This could not be further from the case. I know war. I've seen its effects. The toll that it takes out on the youth of a nation, the children, the soldiers, the mothers. While good can come from war, no good can come from this one."
Her eyes held a certain pain within them as they pointed themselves at each and ever being that sat on the council chamber. These were grim times indeed.
"If I had the capacity to hate, and there was one thing to be allowed for the Jedi to hate, it would be war. It warps and perverts minds, and often Jedi to not return as the devout followers of the light that they once were. War ravages worlds, as is the case with my homeworld, war leaves the young men who take part in it mangled shells of their former selves, war turns takes those who follow the light and cast them down into the depths of darkness. That said, I want you all to realize that war is upon the Republic, therefore it will soon be upon us. Can any of you remember a time when the Republic has been plunged into a war and not needed the assistance of the Jedi Order? I, for one, can think of no such time. It is not a question of if we join this war, but when."
The raven haired woman gave out a long sigh, as much as she loathed to admit it... this was an inescapable truth. Her pained gaze scanned the room until settled on Jace, waiting for the words to drift out of his mouth.

“But, Mistress, what if you have an accident?”
Rayn laughed lightly at the fretting over her droid was giving her. CJ was following, more like looming, just over her left shoulder. The joints whirred slightly every time the caretaker droid moved, something Rayn was simply noticing today of all days. It was annoying when that happened: to notice something you usually don’t. When she noticed the subtle buzz from CJ, Rayn couldn’t get her to NOT notice it. The noise did keep a fair bit of the new high council member’s attention focused on her overprotective, over-helpful, over-fussy droid. “Like what, CJ? What kind of accident could I make today?”
“You could fall.”
“And when have I not been able to get back up on my own?”
The droid didn’t answer. Instead, the female voice spoke from her so called “mouth”, again trying to convince the small Rayn that she was obviously needed. “Mistress, I was programmed to help you due to your lacking in upper appendages. Just, please…”
“You either go back to the quarters and keep Hiccup busy or you wait outside the… uh…”
“See, what I mean! There’s a door in your way!”
They had arrived at the front of the council chambers. Rayn was looked at the doors, a button off to the side. A button that she couldn’t press because she didn’t have arms. “I can open it, still. NO! Don’t touch anything!” She had been about to go on about how she could manage on her own when CJ had moved to press the button for her. The small human shoved her way between the droid and the button, letting out a loud sigh. “CJ, you can remain out here if you so wish. You’re not needed in a council chamber with smooth floors and seats filled of sentient bodies. Stop fretting.”
There was a click, telling Rayn the droid was about to speak. “As you wish, Mistress.”
“Good.” Turning her body slightly, Rayn glanced at the button, depressing it with a command through the Force, and swung herself into the council chambers to greet the other masters.
_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_
During the summary of the Korriban mission and the suggestions and opinions made by the other masters, a silence had befallen Rayn. She seemed content to sit there, a subtle slouch in her posture (with nothing to lean on either side, the only way to go comfortably was down). Her gentle sea green eyes were closed as her ears stayed to open to new voices.
War. They were speaking about war. Speaking about Dark Jedi and the dark side and the Sith returning. She didn’t see the point in why. And speaking this to the other council members was sending a pitter patter rush into her heart. Her bottom lip protruded slightly as she lightly sucked on her upper, composing her thoughts and opinions. She wouldn’t be surprised if the others would speak against her about it. Rayn was sure a couple would believe her a blinded person, accusing her of cutting her off to what was in front of her nose.
Well, war certainly wasn’t what was under her nose. She wouldn’t bring herself to believe that so. No. What was under her nose was decisions. And staying to stand firm to those decisions.
Eyelids opened and a pair of stubborn green eyes looked upon the other council members as they discussed whether to spread Jedi to the Outer Rim or not, what they should do about this threat. Now was the time to voice her opinion and stay to it.
“Masters,” Rayn’s gentle voice glided through the chamber as she sat herself up straight. “Despite the alarm of what has been presented here, I believe we have too little to go off of. Well, er, too little to make a conclusion that this is in fact the Sith. Please, listen to me thoroughly.” Her eyes wandered across each master, holding each gaze steadily for two seconds or so before moving them on.
“I think perhaps we are getting too excited over the news Master Took has given us. Not to say he IS wrong, but, that he COULD be about the Dark Jedi he encountered. Different, maybe so; a beginning conclusion to the Sith are returning? I am doubtful. It could be just what it was: different. All Jedi feel different through the Force, and I’m very sure it’s the same for the dark side. And we’ve all rather heard the claim that so and so encountered Dark Jedi said they were Sith or a Darth of some kind. We’ve always turned the other way to that, knowing that it is silly nonsense. I do not see a difference in that.
“Second,” Rayn shifted a little uncomfortably, her heart hammering quickly against the cage of her ribs. She leaned a little bit forward, making little movements to make sure she held the attention of the other members. “I will address the movement in the Force. I have heard rumors, and there’s something said about the unusual behavior of the Dark Jedi. Even stated about numbers rising slightly. The Force is always moving. It always shifts. There is a pressure of a dark aura, but it could be simply because some Dark Jedi have gotten smart? There are a large number of them, and that much energy could accumulate to what we feel in the Force. Let’s not forget there are other dark beings that wander the galaxy that could be also giving this energy. The Force could be carrying the wavelengths of what has occurred here on Coruscant. The museum, don’t you remember? No one who steals the last of the Mandalorian war droids, especially the group of fighters reported, can have good intentions for the galaxy as any dark jedi and/or sith should. It’s a warning in the Force, not necessarily the Sith.
“Another thing about that. None of us were alive the last time the Sith invaded galactic space to consume the Jedi and the Republic. I do not see how we can relate the feeling we have to that of years beyond us. I believe that is paranoid of us.”
Rayn was taking a deep breath, trying to quiet the nerves that made her toes twitch in their encased boots. She could feel the disagreement toward her musings. And she opened her mouth to address the masters again when military personnel entered their chambers. Rayn sat up in her seat, snapping eyes to the officer. The report was delivered and quickly the officer left. Rayn sat, nibbling her upper lip for a moment, quickly speaking again.
“Again, they call themselves the Sith Empire. It might not be so. I do not see enough evidence to believe them.
“Do not think for an instance I do not see a threat, though. I do see it. However, I will not get worked up and twisted into a probable fantasy that it is the Sith. It’s a threat. We MAY deal with it, but, please, let us not call this a WIP: War In Progress. I have seen no reason to call this such. Now,” Rayn leaned back, casually flicking a short leg over the other. She scooted her bottom to brace it against the side of the chair, and from there tilted the angle of her body a touch. “I do not think we should spread ourselves thin. Doing that would leave us stupidly open for this now threat that has claimed two of the Republic’s planets. An investigation should be put in progress. Sending Jedi on missions to scout is a good idea, but send them to the now overtaken planets undercover. These should be Jedi we can trust through and through. Then, send several others to the planets that are “neighbors” to Mygeeto and Mon Calamari, just to keep a look out. A threat big enough to overtake planets needs some tabs. Keep the Republic updated, but let us not influence great amounts around the threat should it decide that the Republic is a threat to them and attack. Let us not prepare for war, but prepare for a way to resolve. As Jedi, we should be the last to think war.
“I’m finished now. I can’t signal with arms to make that be seen.” She offered a small smile, then dropped it to give a solemn expression as she waited for another voice to speak.

Whilst focus shifted from one council member to the next Vreem couldn’t help but watch the exchange of vibrant words and excessive vocabulary as the Masters debated about the new announcement that Mon Calamari and Mygeeto had been invaded and captured by the Sith Empire.
His condolences for Master Ackbar were held back for the moment, he could give them later when they were done for this session of the debate. Vreem was not overly surprised by this news of invasion. It was easy to predict that they would attack, the Sith Empire had hardly even tried to hide their intentions and now they were official. It was pretty obvious that many would be calling for war in order to make sure that the Republic would be able to prevent the Empire taking over any more planets. That was the theory at least. In practice the Republic military was weak, low on funding and resources they were no longer comparable to forces that fought against the Mandalorians and Sith all those years ago.
But now his eyes rested on the older Jedi Master. For a few years now Vreem had been the lead teacher in temple and had taken on his role with an enjoyment few often expressed. He enjoyed the minds of the young, so innocent and open to possibility that they were something to be marvelled. But now he’d relinquished the title. After his late return from Korriban he never once stepped in to teach again. There were others who were taking on the job with more vigour than he would most likely be able to for a while now. His mind had been distanced from teaching and doubt had settled comfortably into his mind. He was in no fit state to teach and so he was glad Master Ackbar was able to take on the role with both the intensity and joy that it required.
Ackbar’s words revealed a lot about himself to Vreem, how his thoughts were so strongly dedicated to the children he taught and the affect their decisions would have upon them. It solidified Vreem’s thoughts regarding the younglings and the care they’d be under. But how had his own mind changed? Usually he’d be thinking along the exact same lines but now he wasn’t, he was taking a completely irregular angle, and it wasn’t like him. He had changed. He knew Korriban had affected him, the tomb and the fight with Jahn, but he just wasn’t if it was in a good way or a bad way. The Jedi Master’s concerns were certainly something to be considered, the younglings were important though Vreem found himself questioning if they were the most important factor to be considered here.
Master Arckan spoke next and she seemed rather confident in herself and her words. The idea that the Jedi going to war was certain seemed to be a very interesting concept in Vreem’s mind, and one he had doubted any of the members present would have mentioned, though now he was proven wrong. No one had currently said that they wanted to go to war, even Rhissai made a point to say she did not want war for the Jedi, but it would happen. In truth her comments were more interesting than Master Ackbar’s; they stirred a new set of thoughts in him.
What did he want? Now that he was changed, that he was different. He had seen the effects of war on some planets, though he would not even dare to compare it the past of someone like Master Arckan’s. He had seen and spoken to citizens who were consumed by war and he also witnessed the poverty which came from it, the innocents who would suffer for the fruitless ambitions of people they didn’t know. But now as he sat in this room filled with what were often thought some of the wisest people in the galaxy he wasn’t so sure how he felt. After all he’d been through, Devaron, Korriban and all those missions that saw him travelling the stars, placing him in clear view of some of the most horrific sights in the galaxy and thinking how he’d do anything to make conditions better, to make lives better. After all of that, was he really considering going to war?
Fortunately for Vreem’s sanity Master Gera’s words ripped him right from his thoughts and internal deliberation. Though she may not have meant to direct her words to him it certainly cam across as such. He felt as though his involvement with Jahn upon Korriban was being question, that the validity of his words were not acceptable. Of course he let her speak, and thought about it himself. He did not doubt his senses on this matter, in fact not an inch of his being was consumed with uncertainty in the case of the Sith returning. His body, his mind and the Force all pointed him to one conclusion, they were back.
Master Gera declared she was finished and after a swift moment of silence Vreem began to speak. “I can assure you Master Gera, I’m quite strongly aware how Dark Jedi… feel. I also know Jahn, he was never a beacon of light when it came to the Force, but he did what was right by him. There were times when he would slip, even when I was by his side, I know quite clearly how he would feel if he was a Dark Jedi. But he was not a Dark Jedi claiming to be a Sith. Jahn was not the kind of person who cared about titles or rank or power, he simply cared about helping people. And in my experience, there are many reasons some people fall to the dark side and I believe I know why he fell, because he believes that the Jedi Order has failed both him and the people it swears to protect.”
He shifted his gaze from the singular Jedi Master to the rest of those in the room. “I’m sure you’re all aware of the times that we are often not able to get involved in situations we feel we could help in, the political line is one that is often very difficult to cross without some form of hostilities rising, it was this reason that Jahn has left the Order. Not because he wishes a title upon himself but because he wants change, and that makes him far more deadly than any power hungry Dark Jedi. When I felt him with the Force I did not sense Jahn Minraun the fallen Jedi, I saw Veratos, the Sith disciple.” He spoke from his heart and no matter how badly it twisted and lurched in his chest he said the words that he believed in, but that was not all.
After an initial uncertainty about raising the topic he wanted to, Vreem finally pressed on. “As you all know Grand Master Aneem became one with the force earlier this year. However, the true cause of her death was not widely spread, so that we could maintain peace and order. She died combating the Dark Lord Everos on Subterrel, but she managed to destroy him in the process. We believed… no, we hoped that we had acted with enough haste to prevent the Dark Lord from spreading his teachings. However, I think it’s time to realise the truth. After the Dark Lord was defeated the cloud of the Dark Side ceased to grow for a little while, but it has continued to grow and grow. The mines of Subterrel are still the dens of the Sith Lord’s twisted experiments with the Force.”
“Everos was a special case, the lasts reports of him alive are from hundreds of years before his battle with the late Grand Master, and his return was completely unforeseen. But for the brief amount of time he returned for it is possible he could have taken on an apprentice or even guided someone to artifacts we know nothing about. For the past few years I have also come across pretenders who claim to be Sith. But after the reported atrocities upon Subterrel and the death of Master Aneem there was little evidence against Darth Everos being a Sith, and since then I have been far more vigilant when dealing with any pretenders. But I know Jahn and I am entirely certain he is not a Dark Jedi. I simply want to dispel that possibility as I’m no doubt many of the council felt the same way.” Vreem had become accustomed to Jace and Eris placing their trust in his judgement, insight and experience, even though they lacked the details of why he had such things. But now with Master Eris unconscious and Jace forced to be more objective in his new role, Vreem couldn’t help but feel a little disconnected from those who sat in the room with him and to the Jedi who paced through the halls of the Jedi Temple still under the belief that nothing had changed over the last year. Even the sense of Jace’s distance made him feel uncomfortable. What was he left with now, Niv-Taro, Meira, Arich and Tem. They were the only people around who he felt the same with, but that was only because he hadn’t seen any of them for a while, he made note to go and see them when he next had the opportunity, it might help him if he’s able to see them again.
“And in regards to deployment of informants, I believe it is important that we moderate exactly how many we send because we do have to be very careful not to expose ourselves yet we need the information. And taking Master Gera’s suggestion, sending informants to worlds currently under the influence of the Sith Empire could prove to be very fruitful. However, if they were to be caught then we would be dragged into this war at a lethal rate. So if we are to send Jedi informants I suggest we allow only Masters to be sent into Empire occupied territory.” Wasting little time Vreem moved to his last point. “I think we also have to remember the situation that the Republic is currently in there are low funds and resources and discontent is brewing across many planets, the Republic might very well rely upon us more than we would like. Even if members of this Council do not want war to hit us I have no doubt that it will be hitting the Republic very soon. And it will be hitting hard. If we are not prepared to go to war then it is highly likely the Republic will be overcome by the Empire, and I doubt they would be fond of us running around and messing with what will most likely be their affairs.” He stopped, bowed his head and leaned back again, no doubt to be swallowed by a mixture of his own thoughts and the words of those who would speak after him. He’d probably stirred something up with his words, he often did.

Tension seemed to grip the room, he felt as though he could cut through it with a blade. He had been in many tense situations, many of which had seen him near death, but they paled in comparison to this. The minds of the twelve wisest and most powerful members of the Jedi Order all in one room, all focused on one thing. War. It killed millions, further leading to the suffering of billions. Breeding animosity, poverty, and despair. Jace had never participated in war, but history's facts were very clear.
The Republic soldier had arrived only minutes ago informing the council of the loss of Mygeeto and Mon Calamari. Most he believed had expected it eventually, afterall greed dictated they would not stop at Dantooine. Jace was no coward but if he could avoid war during his lifetime, he would be content. He had seen evil time and time again, and it was not always at the end of a crimson lightsaber. When he thought of war, he thought of all the evil he had seen and magnified it over and over again. What he had seen had affected hundreds maybe thousands but not billions.
He was pulled from such cold thoughts by the voice of Master Ackbar. The Mon Calamari brought a very unique view to the council which Masters could. He was first and foremost a teacher, and as such his thoughts centered around the younglings. Not too long ago Jace would have expected Vreem to say much of the same, but he had changed. There was no doubt, Jace knew his friend had changed. Changed for the better or worse? Jace was not the person to judge.
Master Ackbar's words hit home, for they were of home. The Temple, the sacred academy, training ground, structure of the Jedi. It was a beacon of light that shined at the heart of the Republic. A light which if not protected could be easily snuffed out. They had so much to lose if the Temple was lost. Their younglings, their knowledge, and their morale. The Jedi Master knew that such deviously simple tactics were well within their foe's repertoire. Master Ackbar finished and looked to Jace for his thoughts.
Jace felt a twinge of uncertainty as his old friend began to speak. Rhissai's previous words had been very bold to the extent of hastily thought out. She was a compassionate woman, one with a dark past. He let out a little sigh of relief as she hadn't called anyone moronic, but it was little comfort. Her words were ever bold, he should have expected as much.
"While good can come of war, no good can come of this one"
It had only taken a string of words for Jace to become unsettled. It was of course the age old debate about peace and war. Many stated that there could not be peace without first having war. He thought hard on these words for they echoed a concept which he had heard too many times. To the Grandmaster it sounded a great deal like the argument for "The Greater Good". The ends justify the means. That one may go to war and slaughter thousands for the sake of millions. It was a compelling argument but one which he could never support.
He was getting ahead of himself though, drawing assumptions that may or may not be true. Processing the rest of her words, Jace let out another mental sigh. She was indeed right that war would undoubtedly be on the Republic. Rhissai also stated that it was inevitable that the Jedi would join the war. Jace found this to be a dangerous train of thought. If she had already come to the conclusion that war was inevitable she may ignore other alternative possibilities. Jace himself had been keeping his mind open, trying to absorb every possible perspective. Her eyes drifted toward his, and once again another council member looked for his words.
The next to speak was the council's newest member, Master Gera. He almost smiled as she began to speak, he could tell her words would be quite interesting. Jace could tell that her words reflected the thoughts of some of the other members. Indeed the council only had Vreem's words on the return of the Sith. Jace trusted Vreem's words wholly but that could also be because they were friends. No, the Force told him that the Sith had risen again. It was true though, they only had one source for such a significant claim, it was only natural to be doubtful of it.
Master Gera's next words reiterated what many of the others advocated yet to a more dangerous degree. Insertion into enemy territory to gain information. A bold plan which could have major repercussions if gone wrong. Jace tended to agree with her though, they needed the information. Jace was confident that they could accomplish such tasks though. Many Jedi were skilled masters of infiltration and concealment, Jace among them. His thoughts reflected Master Gera's, they needed to be Jedi that were experienced and could be trusted.
The time had finally come for Master Vreem Took to say his piece. Jace had always looked to this man for both wisdom and guidance. Vreem's thoughts had always seemed to reflected his own, yet something had changed. He now felt distant from his friend, at least in terms of their thinking. Jace remained silent as Vreem spoke of Jahn, asserting his belief that this man was no mere Dark Jedi but a Sith disciple. He heard the conviction in his friend's words, Master Gera's words no doubt struck a chord.
Jace watched as many of the council held in a gasp as Vreem mentioned Everos. He had heard rumors when he joined the council only to have them confirmed when he became Grandmaster. Jace had made sure to study his predecessors, and had learned the truth about Master Aneem's death. She had done a great deed by battling the Sith Lord and in the course becoming one with the Force. It was a dark stain which a majority of the Jedi have no knowledge. He continued to listen until Vreem had finished his part with a somewhat controversial end. His words had been starting to bother Jace to a certain degree. He was seeming almost eager to go to war, something which no person should ever be.
The Grandmaster listened to the rest of the council, their words reiterating much of what had already been said. Advocating some measure of action but avoiding war at all costs. They all turned to Jace, the Grandmaster of the Order. Looking to him for counsel, for reassurance, for guidance. The weight of his position suddenly hit him and he wondered how Eris had done it all this time. Jace steeled himself, the Order would look to the council for guidance, he had to be both objective and decisive. Jace had never broken under pressure before, he was not about to start now.
"An era of peace has passed. Of course there is never true peace but a state of relative balance. Master Gera has stated it best, none of us were alive when the Sith invaded last." He paused momentarily before turning to face Master Gera. "Master you stated that we may not know it was the Sith Empire who attacked Mygeeto and Mon Calamari. We know without a doubt that they invaded Dantooine. Their influence and wealth have done nothing but grow since then. I trust what we have heard from the Republic, it is not a stretch to believe the Sith Empire has made its move." His gaze drifted from the woman to the rest of the council. "There is no doubt that the Republic will not sit idle, they will declare war anytime now"
"The dilemma laid before us is not what the Republic will do, but what we will do. The council's decision had been made clear on this matter. Almost all of us agree that we need to at a minimum take proactive steps. The most prevalent of these being putting Jedi on planets of 'concern'. I am also in favor of Master Gera's suggestion that we put Jedi on Sith occupied planets. What we truly lack at this point is information, we cannot make informed decisions without the proper information. Major caution is needed, we are taking steps to make sure we are informed not so we can go to war."
"A time may come when this Order may be pushed into war, that is something I cannot foresee. We cannot rule out any possibility at this point, it is still too early for that. There are a few steps we must take along with this. First is to begin dialogue with the military. Though we have not decided to go to war, preparation would not go amiss. I would like a council member to be to act as liaison. Assisting in relief efforts may be another thing to consider. In the next couple of days I would like the council to gather of list of trusted Masters to possibly be inserted behind enemy lines."
The Jedi Master paused for a few moments before continuing, he was nearing the end of his part.
"Make no mistake, war is upon the Republic. Many will turn to the Jedi for guidance. We must remain resolute in our decision, we cannot afford doubt. At no cost should anyone sacrifice or turn from their beliefs. No one ever said the path of the light was easy, remember the Code, remember your oath as a Jedi. Remember what happened four centuries ago when a group of Jedi decided to take matters into their own hands. Remember what they returned as, remember as those who had good but hasty intentions did more harm than good. The Jedi must remain united or we will fall."
Jace felt as if a great weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He truly believed that their power came from the unification of their belief in the path of light. Whether they went to war or not, they had to get through this time of crisis together, or they would not get through it at all.
"Are there any other suggestions or issues that the wish to be brought forth?"

Once more, the Mon Calamari Jedi said nothing, simply waited and listened, taking in all that was said. His fellow master's all had valid points, and seemed to be thinking the same thing. Action was indeed needed, and as the Grandmaster said, a large scale maneuver would be a poor decision. There was one thing though that he needed to point out, before their plan was set.
"Belaran, I would like to start with saying that I support this act- staging key, trusted members of our Order is the best first move. However, you forget that in this time, it seems our young and more hot headed members seem to outnumber our older, wiser generation. But, there are some Knights that I feel are almost ready for their Master status- something the Order needs more of. We cannot be hasty with our choices though, we don't want anyone letting this promotion get to their head...
Ozzril paused for a second and took a wet, shaky breath then exhaled slowly. He put a webbed hand on his head and ran it over his cranium, a weary look settled in his eyes. It had been a gradual thing, but lately the elder Jedi had been feeling a little off- he could tell it was nothing physical, the Force telling him his body was clear. But it seemed it was the Force itself that would weigh heavily on him, its effect physically exhausting him. He took another slow breath and regained his composure before continuing.
Excuse me friends, allow me to continue now. As I said, this is another matter we need to discuss. But just as you said Belaran, we must make sure we stay united. Take a Dagobah mangrove tree. Yes, each of it's roots might be a small part of the tree itself, but without said roots, the sheer weight of the tree would cause the whole thing to come crashing down, taking everything in it's path...
Ozzril finished with a wheeze, sitting back in his chair and closing his eyes, the Mon Cal really had nothing more to say on the matter, the whole thing weigh heavy on him. I must get to the meditation chambers and try to sort this all out... we're missing something... something important... Thought the Jedi. The Force was clouded in his mind, it was dark, murky- even for the Sage Master, one that was considered a great seer. He turned his eyes to his friends and allies then waited, interested in what they thought

Three Weeks Later The tension, he hadn't known such tension since he infiltrated the darkest corners of the galaxy. Yet this, this was somehow even worse than that. Three weeks? Nay it must have been three months. Time seemed to have slowed yet this moment came too soon. In fact, he wished it hadn't arrived at all. These next few days would decide the fate of the Jedi Order and its followers. War had been declared by the new Supreme Chancellor. He had to admit it was quite the speech. Jace wished not for war, he wanted to avoid it if at all possible, but his heart told him that it was inevitable. There were some of the past who would blatantly deny what was upon them, Jace was no such man. There was some who blindly rushed in, Jace was no such man. No, he was both, and he was neither. The fate of thousands possibly millions lay in the hands of twelve. It was the Jedi's mandate to protect the people of the Republic. As a shadow, the Jedi master, had always skirted the line between defender and soldier. Things were much simpler for him during those days. Back then, there was no big picture, no fate of the Republic hanging in the balance. He was still the same man he had always been but his perceptions had shifted. "The invasion of Mon Calamari" He stated suddenly The Jedi Grandmaster stood up. "The assassination of the Supreme Chancellor" The Jedi moved to the center of the chamber. "War" Jace looked into the eyes of his peers. They all understood the seriousness of their current situation. Some were sure of themselves, others doubtful. All were united on the path of light, the path of righteousness. The thought kept Jace resolute, it kept him focused. He was honored to share the weight of such decisions with these enlightened beings. "War is upon the Republic. It has been almost three weeks since the invasion of Mon Calamari and the assassination of the Supreme Chancellor. It was only a matter of time until the declaration of war, and now it has come. Three weeks ago we decided that preparation was prudent but the Jedi would not go to war. The question before all of us is simple. No, simple in speech but not in deed. Now that the Republic goes to war will the Jedi go with them?Three weeks ago though war was inevitable but was not declared. Do your opinions still remain unchanged or have they shifted in light of this declaration?" He once again looked at each of his peers before returning to his seat. Some of them were older than him, others younger, but none had been faced with such a decision. The assassination of the Supreme Chancellor had bothered him greatly. He had expected the Sith Empire to attempt it, but not in such an intricate manner. Making it seem as though a Jedi had done the deed to breed mistrust. It did not seem a tactic of aristocrats but of the Sith. Jace did not believe in coincidences, it seemed more and more likely that the Sith had returned once again.

Sage Master Ozzril Ackbar nodded as the Grandmaster spoke, he was correct. Things had changed drastically in the past three weeks, it was easily felt in the Force by any who were sensitive. Taking the silence after Jace had spoken, the elder Mon Cal slowly and visibly shakily got to his feet now. He took a slow, wet, shaky breath and closed his golden eyes for a second. His illness was beginning to show more and more as time progressed, and the Jedi tried his best not to show it.
"Excuse me friends, but allow me to speak first. As you have asked Beleren, I answer as I have before. I personally do not support the Jedi actively participating in this upcoming war. I'd have us work as healers, and defenders of the civilians... but that is not my main concern. I have meditated deeply on this, spending many hours pondering what is to come. Time and time again, as I'm sure some of you would guess, my mind strays to the younglings.
As lead instructor of the young, this has been and still is my main concern. And I've come to a decision. Coruscant is the hub of the Republic, as well as the Order. I'm sure I am not the only one that knows that our enemy's eyes will eventually turn towards our home. Because of this, I propose this:
Allow me, my apprentice, and anyone else who wants to join,to take the younglings to Tython. It is deeper in the core, and farther from our enemies. The Temple there is indeed still under construction, but that is exactly why the enemy will not see this maneuver. I would rather do this preemptively than do it frantically when attacked."
After speaking Ozzril coughed wetly once, his body tired. Calling upon the Force for support, he let it freely flow through his body and mind, its warmth filling his body and empowering him. He looked at his friends and allies then nodded, signaling he was done speaking. The Mon Cal stepped back and lowered himself into his chair with a groan before sitting back and awaiting a response.

I told you so just didn't quite cut it in this instance. Not that Rhissai would ever say that to her peers, or even think it for that matter. She was far too old to be so immature as to think that at such a dire hour. Chronologically that is, not necessarily biologically. The raven haired woman scanned her emerald green eyes around the room, looking at each and every council member as they heard the news. Each reaction she saw was just as unique as the face that made it, and the level of spiritual power that it held.
Rhissai thought hard on Jace's words. War was upon the Republic. It was official. She asked herself what should be done? It didn't take her mind long to find an answer: ride to war. No. No right answer came so easily, and this was most certainly not a descision to be made on impulse. What should be done? What are the pros? The cons? There were infinite questions that needed answering. But she couldn't answer them all.
The woman stayed silent as she thought, Rhiss simply stared off into empty space as she lost herself in thought. Three weeks ago the answer was so simple: War. It was the band-aid that fit any wound, the only way to find true peace, and the only way to stop the Sith menace. But now... now... after so much time to think... the answer was less clear. What would happen if the Jedi that go to war return as followers of the Dark Side, much like Revan and Malak but a few hundred years before? But then... what would happen if the Jedi get involved with the war too late? What if they were never needed at all? She clenched her jaw. It was the slightly off voice of Master Ackbar that pulled the woman out of her thoughts.
Her eyes bore a hole into the Mon Calamari as he spoke his peace, then sat back down with a groan. Even well after he was done speaking the woman continued to stare blankly, thinking on every last syllable that left the man's lips. After a final long moment to gather her many thoughts, and the slightest of sighs, she spoke. "I agree with Master Ackbar. The Jedi temple is a worthy enough target, but the temple while its filled with young and malleable force-sensitive minds? Well, thats worth just about any risk."
The woman bit the side of her lip with her right canine tooth before continuing, "as for war? I don't know what I believe anymore. Three weeks ago the answer was so vivid in my mind, so clear... but now.... now it narrowly escapes me. Like I am trying to capture a thick mist with nothing more than my hands," she had nothing more to say after that. Rhissai leaned back in her chair once more, signalling the council that she was through.

Post by Vreem Took on Sept 22, 2009 16:38:30 GMT -5
Days seemed to grow longer and longer, as if they were trying to test the limitations of time and burst through to infinity. Another day, another council session, talks had been sporadic since their last meeting three weeks ago, and Vreem had been very much active since there. Knowledge held a great deal of power at the moment and the Jedi Master had done his best to take in what information he could. He was once again walking the path of the Sentinel, something he had not done in a long time, ever since becoming a fully dedicated teacher.
He no longer thought he could face a class of younglings and guide them like he used to. Perhaps his mind had been tainted by the dark influence of the knowledge he’d attained. For moments he would wish for blissful ignorance, to continue onwards unaware like the members of the Order, like the younglings as they streamed through the halls of the Temple from lesson to lesson. They did not know of the darkness that would await them, would test them, at times he wondered if it were wise for them to have so little experience outside of the temple, it certainly made for some shocking moments during the first few years of one’s apprenticeship.
As much as he wanted, he could not shrug off what he knew, that was not the kind of man Vreem Took had become over the years and it was not something he should be doing given his position on the High Council. He watched and listened as his peers spoke in turn, Master Beleren, Master Ackbar and Master Arckan.
“I have to disagree Master Ackbar, Master Arckan” he said cautiously, “I don’t think moving all of the younglings to Tython will serve any purpose other than to cause unnecessary panic for them and unwanted attention to our actions. By keeping the majority of our younglings in this temple we are able to provide better lessons, simple access to the archives and it allows us to easily direct a number of our Knights and Masters to the younglings that require a master. Our shifting of forces from the centre of the Republic can be interpreted as suspicious by military informants or personnel. Already we are under the watchful eye of the Republic after the events involving the previous Supreme Chancellor, out of character movements not only alerts the Sith Empire, it will also catch a lot of attention from the Republic and its citizens.”
“Moreover, Coruscant is very heavily defended and the Sith Empire has yet to move from their position in the Outer Rim. You will be moving the younglings to a planet that will not be adequately defended. It is not protected by the Republic, there are no fleets or battalions to defend the temple if our suspicions about the Sith are true and it will become a major target for them. So I would advise against your desired action and we simply continue with the planned expansion program that we have applied time and time again.” Vreem quietened down; his response regarding the younglings was finished and his thoughts on the matter were blatantly clear, though his words already gave an insight into his frame of mind. He was talking about fleets, armies and strategic importance.
He had heard their words now but felt that they only grazed the issue, they would have to plunge much deeper into this discussion and he knew all too well that some of his words would likely not be warmly greeted by those who sat in the chamber with him. Vreem wanted to push them further into the heart of the matter. His mind was set and certain, there was war, and war is not so easily avoided.
“War is on the Republic and so you all believe that the war is not upon us. I think you misjudge the Sith Empire. They have already shown that they involve us with their invasion of Dantooine, they killed many Jedi that day and to avoid war we turned to negotiations.” Vreem paused for a moment, looked around the room with a frown and edged forward on his seat; he would have his turn now. “But how many more of our Order are we willing to sacrifice in order to abstain from this war. History shows us that when there is war, the Jedi have joined the Republic, and when they have not the Republic, its citizens and the Galaxy have all suffered because of the decision that was made. I can understand that you may not want to go to war,” he said to his fellow Masters, “and I do not crave for it myself. However, the way things are, the way they are going and the ever growing darkness leads me to believe that war may be our only way to protect the citizens.”
He fell silent on that lingering thought for a moment before he paced onwards. “I know many of you may doubt or still remain uncertain in regards to return of the Sith,” he said with a brief glance towards Master Gera, “but evidence that there is at least some sort of group working in-line with the aims of the Empire has grown. The assassination of the Supreme Chancellor is known to all of you and also the intention to make it appear as though one of our Order committed this act. But there is more, the recent assassination of Admiral Fral, an iconic war hero in the Republic Navy, the abduction of agri-workers from the Outer Rim world of Bakura and the events that took place on Umgul, which led to the death of one of the Order’s Masters. We are taught not to believe in luck, only the Force and the fact that these events have taken place now only strengthens my belief that the Sith have returned.”
“Right now the Empire is still small and if we assist the Republic War Effort we can stop the bloodshed before it reaches desperate levels. I don’t propose we sit back and watch as things worsen and worsen until we are dragged into the war, I propose that we get involved now, take advantage of this opportunity, push back the Empire and uncover the truth about the Sith.” He cast his gaze around them and wondered what would come, he did not doubt that his words would kick up a fuss, but he believed his words and he believed that action was essential. “We are entering a dark time and our actions and decisions will hold great sway over the things that are to come, listen to what I am proposing. It is war. Yes, a war that I don’t want, but a war that is upon us nonetheless and one we can put a stop to if we dedicate ourselves to stopping it.” He stopped, bowed and, avoiding the faces of his peers, made his way back to his seat. Vreem threw his body into the cushioned chair and eased out a sigh so that it would avoid being heard. They were not words he spoke lightly.
