Name: Balek Ak'qli
Race: Caamasi
Age: 26
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 155 lbs.
Appearance:
As with most of his kin, Balek is covered in dark tan fur, with 5 dark brown stripes going from his forehead to the back of his head, where they keep flowing outward. On his ears, he wears only one silvery earring, which was a token from his first master in the Jedi Order, and his eyes are the traditional color amber with black
pupils of his kind.
Two distict traits are evident in his appearance: His atypically long hair in the back of his head, which he ties up in a "chonmage" style, and a scar on the top side of his snout, caused by an unfortunate accident during his lightsaber training.
His garments were what you'd expect of a Jedi Knight, utterly devoted to the order, but under his traditional knightly robes, he wore a colorful undershirt, which we wore one fateful day of his childhood, until the day of his Trials. Balek explains: "This shirt simbolizes my family's truth. Honor and Wisdom for the Republic" . Also, due to his long hair in the back of his head, he is usually seen with his head covered under his cloak's hood.
Birthplace: Caamas
Faction and Rank: Jedi Knight - Consular
Bio:
Born to a wealthy, diplomatic family and part of the well respected diplomatic clan Qli, Balek enjoyed the comforts of an aristocrat for most of his early childhood in his home planet, Caamas. He was the fist born son of the republic representative Eyrgo Ak'qli, and although his mother is still unknown, he never longed to find her, because of his father's extremely attentive nature towards his sons, and the half-dozen maids and servants that cared for him and his brother Eyrkel.
As playful childs, Balek and his brother enjoyed a privileged existence, until his father recieved a commission by republic central government to try and expand relations with certain "troubled" races in the mid and outer rim. Balek enjoyed traveling around the galaxy with his father more than his brother, so he acompanied him on many diplomatic assignments, and by doing so, learned enough about galactic politics to be helpful in his many tasks. Before Balek's 7th birthday, he was carrying minutes of his father's meetings with high ranking officials in countless worlds, to a point where everyone who met him said he was being "groomed for diplomatic life".
The day of his 6th birthday, Balek's father recieved a message from the Republic, ordering him to come to Coruscant immediately. Upon reaching Coruscant, his father was taken into custody by Republic officials in suspicion of treason. This event caused Balek to produce his first Memnis, a long overdue occurance, due to his sheltered life.
His father was convicted and sent to a prison colony. Memories of this day haunted Balek through most of his training in the jedi order, until he started wearing a multicolored shirt one of his servants made for him for his birthday, which he was wearing when his father was arrested.
Subsequent to his father's trial, Balek was approached by Jedi knight Arnasi Keth, a human female who not only saw a young boy struck by grief, but sensed the force flow strongly with him. She recited: "There is no emotion, there is peace", and much to her surprise, he understood clearly. This apparently fortuitous meeting was the start of Balek's new life, as a student of the force.
His first years as an initiate were considerably harsh, due to his lack of physical strength, but being the proficient student he was under his father's tutelage, he quickly began to be noticed as the perfect referee for youngling games. It was clear he was not the most skillful swordsman of his clan, but his control of the force was impressive. At age 12, he was chosen as a padawan, by an old acquaintance...
Master Arnasi, the woman he met the day of his father's trial, was to be Balek's master in the ways of the force. It was not long before Arnasi discovered her apprentice's well developed abilities in politics, diplomacy and race relations, but being proficient in one area is often the result of a slight neglect of other capabilities. In Balek's case, his physical abilities were somewhat lacking. This was evident one day when, while practicing with his newly created lightsaber, he dropped it, and it exploded, sending a small wave of energy through the emitter that almost cut his snout off. After healing from the wound, Balek started concentrating even more on his force control abilities, and less on his Lightsaber technique.
As he learned the ways of the force, he frequently recieved news from Caamas, that spoke of his family's dishonor, his traitor father, his subsequent death, and his now delinquent younger brother, who had become a petty thief, and was facing trial for his crimes. The loss of his family was almost unbearable to him, so he decided to go help his brother back in Caamas, As he was about to leave for his home planet, however, a message from the jedi council urged them to leave for Antar 4, to settle a dispute between Gotal territories. It was obvious to him, if he left for Antar 4, he would miss
his brother's trial, and if he disobeyed his mandate, he would be cast out of the order. In the end, with deep sorrow, he departed for Antar 4 to fulfill his duty as part of the jedi order.
Both master and padawan stayed together several years, doing missions for the council together. Some, playing to Arnasi's
combat prowess, and others appealing to Balek's ability to mediate in even the most distressful of situations, In some instances, resolving cases that would in any other way end in bloodshed, through a peaceful, satisfactory solution for all parties. Arnasi quickly came to realize the reason for his success in diplomacy, came from his superior telekinetic and telepathic abilities, but his swordplay was still lacking. Having only mastered the Shii-Cho, he was obviously not ready for the trials to knighthood.
At the age of 19, Arnasi and Balek departed for Dantooine in search of Jedi Master Dunn Avery, chronicler of the order, and master to Arnasi. After considering the facts about Balek's training, and uniquely one-sided abilities, it was decided that Balek was to be taught by both his master Arnasi, and master Avery, to achieve balance. While master Arnasi focused only on lightsaber training, master Avery taught him to use his extensive knowledge to alter the environment around him, to compensate for his poor combat skills.
Years of arduous training in both disciplines made him finally ready to face the trials of knighthood:
For the trial of skill, the council thought it would be a real test of Balek's abilities, to face his combat specialist teacher, Arnasi Keth in a lightsaber duel. As was expected, his mastery of the Shii-Cho wasn't enough, but he persevered by attempting to subdue her with the little-known Niman form, and at the same time causing the air around them to gust, throwing her off balance with his Environmental abilities. In the end, he passed the trial... Barely.
The Council then explained how, by letting go of his brother's fate, and being mindful of his actions, he has passed the trial of Flesh, and as for the trial of spirit, he was to destroy the shirt that linked him to his father, forever letting go of his ties to his past, and accepting the reality of his father's treason. Saddened by the council's decision, he took it off, and burned it with his lightsaber.
With his trials complete, and his padawan braid cut off, he returned to Caamas and spent 2 years in meditiation and learning at the jedi temple. When he emerged, it was the day of his 26th birthday. 20 years had passed since his father was arrested. "Father... I thank you for teaching me", He said, and wondered what the future would bring...
Lightsaber: After the failure of his first constructed lightsaber, he built one more, salvaging whatever parts he could from the old one. The emitter and the lens were destroyed, but the power cell and the crystal remained, so with those he constructed a better one.

"I prepared a surprise for you with this one" said Jedi master Dunn Avery during Balek's training. He bends over, inside one of his containers, and releases a remote into the room.
"What's different about it?"
"You'll see when it starts to fire". The seasoned jedi takes a seat on top of the same container from which he released the remote, and smiles.
Balek stands firmly, observing the remote's movements across the room, lightsaber blazing, in expectation of the first blaster shot, but it never comes. Instead, the small droid fires a rapid succession of sonic energy bolts that drop the unexpecting padawan to the floor.
"Sonic bolts master? Why sonic bolts?"
"It is imperative, apprentice, that you learn to defend yourself by combining your knowledge of the physical world, and of the force.
Meditate on this before trying again."
"Yes, master".
Several minutes passed in quiet meditation, while the remote still flew around the room, until eventually, Balek looks up at his master. "I'm ready, master"
"Good. let us see, then."
Master Dunn stands up, and restarts the training sequence on the remote. The little droid floats around the room as it did the last time, but Balek does not move. He sits still in meditation position, not even following the droid around with his sight, as if he didn't care about the incoming flurry of sonic shots.
The droid fires on Balek, but before the shots could reach him, they disappear without a trace.
"Excellent, Balek. By altering the environment between you and the droid, you removed enough of the air to dissipate the shots. Where there's no air, there's no sound. Very good.
"Thank you, master."
