Bio: (23 Jan 2009 - Unfinished but the rough is down with all the info)
Karen Chase is the twisted result of the most warped of unions - two dark Jedi. And so, with a family tree like that, it was almost preordained that she become one with the dark side.
As a child, Karen was a keen listener and the type to mimic almost everything her parents did; idolising them as children usually do. It was this lifestyle which endeared her to the prospect of becoming a Dark Knight, leaving her to dream of the things she’d accomplish as well as the carnage she’d wreak once she reached her goal. She even accepted their harsh methods of discipline and, in her naiveté, believed that they’d all work side-by-side one day. It was a pipe-dream of course, since everyone knows how long such relationships on the dark side last but admittedly, her parents weren’t doing too badly considering the time they’d been together. They actually had a solid (if slightly dysfunctional) family, or at least until Karen hit the budding age of thirteen.
Unfortunately for Karen’s parents, she wasn’t one to throw away countless centuries worth of tradition and so -- as teenagers do -- she rebelled. Where they wanted her to live wildly, she took things in her stride and where they expected her to react violently, she found a passive solution. It wasn’t long before her parents had to accept the frightening realization that their daughter had the potential to be… good, and it was then that the problems started. Don’t get Karen wrong though; she wasn’t some innocent tree-hugger. You can’t spend years with a family that centres on hate, aggression, violence and passion, and not come out with a few odd little quirks. She just was a little too kind for their liking.
From there things only got worse; especially when they discovered that Karen, their young Dark Jedi in training, wasn’t even touched by the force. It was a heart wrenching experience for the parents as they had such expectations; their daughter’s greying skin only strengthening their opinion that she was a force sensitive with dark tendencies. Alas, it soon became apparent that their abilities hadn’t transferred at all.
And so, ashamed and torn, with the recent discovery acting as the proverbial “straw which broke the camel’s back”, each parent came up with a solution. Sadly however, at least one of them had decided to take the more brutal route while the other was in strong disagreement…
It was late at night when Evan and Iria secretly met outside the house, each carrying their blades heavily at their sides, their resolve strong even if they felt their hearts waver. And, after exchanging one last glance, they slowly raised their blades, with both shifting into a fighting stance which could only be described as half-hearted. By morning, Karen was the first to find their grim remains…
After a few years of scrounging the streets and living off whatever she could get her hands on, she was found by a passing Jedi; meaning she was immediately brought to the closest Masters for review. Not to go into too much detail but it wasn’t long before she found herself out in the cold again. In the end, she’d barely stepped into the room before one of the masters was rejecting her, saying that her emotions were too unstable and that she’d only bring grief. As a side note however, the master added that what the padawan had felt was not a sensitivity to the force but rather residual force energy; likely from mingling for an extended period amongst Jedi or in a place of power.
She was around eighteen at this time and, with nowhere else to go, she did what she thought she must, enlist in the military.
She still has her parents’ lightsabers; to remind her of them. She doesn’t like to use them though and would probably fall quickly if she went up against someone trained in the use of a lightsaber.
It was during her time in the military that Karen took part in her first battle, under the flag of the Republic. It was a brief yet brutal skirmish on the planet of Dantooine; the sky alight with the deafening booms of turbolasers and small arms fire, while Chase was being ordered left and right as Admirals tossed her one promotion after the next. Honestly, Chase wasn’t even part of the conflict at times and even then she had no idea what was happening.
At the end of the battle Chase was left with a sour taste in her mouth, the disorganization an affront to one who was taught to always seeks control. It was for this reason she resigned from the military.
Chase was never meant for a civilian’s life however and after a time she soon longed for something more. And so the young soldier started job hopping, from pilot to bounty hunter, to body guard, etc; only to grow tired of the lack of stability within the fringe as well.
She now searches for something else...
