Name: Victoria Aspen Naaden
Official Title: Chancellor Naaden
To her closest friends: Asp
Race: Human
Age: 57
Height: 5'10
Weight: 140
Appearance:
Chancellor Naaden is ever and always put together, with never a hair of of place. She takes no pride in her appearance, but knows the value of first impressions, and seeks to make the outside reflect the inside. Each one of her fifty-five years shows clearly on her weathered face, but it adds credibility to her wisdom.
Her eyes protrude slightly from her head, giving her an owl-ish, intense glare. Her lips are thin and taught, and when pulled into a grimace can be quite stern. She might have been beautiful once, but now old-age has staked its claim.
Chancellor Naaden's graying hair can almost always be found wound up into a tight, neat bun. To see her with her hair down is a rare occasion indeed. Oftentimes, she can be found in a simple wide-brimmed hat, reminiscent of those worn by those who tend gardens. The hat has seen a monumental amount of use, and the fabric is soft and worn.
To formal meetings of the Senate, she wears a ceremonial Veda Cloth robe. This comprises a tailored black dress, a deep violet sash around her waist, and a long, floor-length overjacket. The outside of this jacket is black fabric, embroidered with intricate, swirling designs, deep violet to match the sash. The underside of the jacket is a silken material, also deep violet.
For less formal occasions, Chancellor Naaden can be found garbed in simple black, perhaps with accents of a similarly dark color. (Case-by-case clothing will be narrated in-RP.)
Birth place: Alderaan
Occupation: Member of the Galactic Senate
Rank: Supreme Chancellor
Bio: Chancellor Naaden was born on the world of Alderaan. Long before she bore the title of Chancellor, she was known simply as 'Victoria Aspen'. She came into the world kicking and screaming, as all humans do. Her mother was a thoughtful artist, loving yet eccentric. This was balanced by the hard, cold logic of her father, a shopkeeper and man of numbers. They were an odd pair, to be sure, but they loved their only daughter. She caused them a bit of worry at the beginning, however, for it seemed as if Victoria wasn't picking up language as fast as she ought to have been. She had been right on par with her 'mamma's and 'dadda's, but it didn't seem as if she could come forth with anything more complicated. The doctors assured her that there was nothing wrong, however, and Victoria's parents hushed their worries. They were eased completely, however, one day shortly before Victoria's third birthday, when she insisted on taking a book down from a shelf. It was a copy that Victoria's Mother's mentor had illuminated, and quite valuable, and Victoria's Mother gently took it away. Victoria, however, protested, saying with teary eyes, 'But I want to look at the pictures!'. She never repeated these bits of language in company; only around her father and mother. And so it was concluded that she was simply a quiet, withdrawn child.
However, as she grew, it became apparent that she learned much. Her days before pre-school were spent quietly looking at the pictures in her mother's books, or exploring the family's small garden. When school began, Victoria was initially terrified. However, she connected with her teacher, a bright young woman, and despite a bumpy start, Victoria came to love her times in school. Even when she was home, she devoured book after book. Apathy was never her plight, and where she had opportunity, she took advantage of it. Exhibits at the local museum, special displays at the library, new shipments of books, publications of historical magazines, she loved them all. What never made sense to her, however, was mathematics. Physical things; addition, subtraction, geometry, these things made sense to her. But complicated numbers, formulas, abstract concepts... they made less sense than a foreign language.
She was always the quiet one of the class, with few friends save her closest confidants. Victoria's survival in grade-school could easily be attributed to her best friend Adelia. Adelia was outspoken, but thoughtful, and from that first day of the first grade, took pity on Victoria. Theirs developed into a close friendship, each telling the other everything. Adelia often acted as a voice for Victoria, while Victoria provided Adelia with level-headed perspectives on things. Adelia even managed to convince Victoria to allow a few others into her tightly-guarded circle, no small feat.
When she wasn't studying, Victoria was painting or reading or writing; she found much solace in these things. Her parents were kind and loving, if not a bit distracted, and Victoria was expected to take care of herself from a young age.
She did not mind, however, and many teenage afternoons found her wandering the city parks, watching people and pondering the world. If she didn't have her nose buried in a history book, that is. By the time she graduated school, Chancellor Naaden was as well-versed in Galactic politics as many Senators, however her shyness was debilitating. She had an opinion, but she couldn't voice it; and speaking in front of a crowd terrified her so much, she'd cry just thinking about it. Finally picking up on this, her parents sent Victoria, now sixteen, away to a teaching internship program, hoping that sharing her knowledge would spark the girl's boldness.
In the beginning, the plan nearly backfired. It forced Victoria and Adelia to go their separate ways, to which Victoria vehemently rebelled. Silently. Without a voiced protest, she trudged off to the Program. She and Adelia promised to stay in touch, but such plans often fail, as did theirs. Adelia was a friend for a season, and that season drew to a close.
In the end, the plan was a success. Victoria was, of course, terrified at first. However, she found a great mentor in her teacher, and comfort in the acceptance of the young children. Victoria had finally come out of her shell, and over time, her personality developed into a vivacious and tenacious one, full of energy and zest, yet measured by a strong intelligence.
Now that she had friends, they called her Asp, and the young woman completed her teaching internship, now aged twenty. She went on to teach elementary school until she was aged twenty-five. At this point, she sought a greater teaching challenge, and so applied for a new position at the University: Professor of Higher Learning, teaching Political Science and Galactic history; her passions. She was accepted for the job, much to her joy. The University was top-notch, and spanned several campuses, all upon Alderaan. Asp was able to divide her time between the campuses, and she quite enjoyed the change at travel and culture.
A year into this teaching career, Asp had her first brush with what might have actually been labeled Romance: she became quite fond of a fellow Professor: Boris Wimbleton, who ironically specialized in Abstract Application of Mathematics. Asp met him when seeking counsel on some specific statistical evidence, and they developed a rapport. However, this relationship became a deep and mutual respect, and nothing more.
Over these years as a professor, Asp became more and more involved in local politics and local issues. Twenty-nine year-old Asp ran for a position on the Local Board of Educators, and was elected by a landslide. Never would another victory come this easily, as Asp soon found out. However, she got along well with her peers, and her charisma lent her to friendly relations, even with her enemies.
After a year serving on the board, Asp found herself in want of a position of higher leadership. She ran then for Regional Director, and barely scraped by a win; her platform was stronger, but her opponent more experienced. Even so, she was victorious, and served in this position two years.
It was during this time that Asp found herself to be the sort to be completely consumed by her Political Career. This aided her career greatly; for her decisions were always well researched, well-founded, and never lacked any effort. However, her personal relationships suffered, and Naaden found herself growing further and further from all but her closest advisers. Interestingly enough, Asp thrived in this environment. She found the people as a whole to be the only companion she needed, and her withdrawn tendencies had never lent her to numerous friendships, in any event.
Now 32, and with her term now expired, The woman who now when by simply Naaden again worked to climb the ranks, running for the position of Senator. Her opponent accused her of accepting bribes, which was clearly untrue, and easily disproved. However, the controversy surrounding the whole mess still cost her the election, though her name was cleared.
Naaden spent the next four years waiting for the next election, and turned back to teaching Political Science at the University. Naaden was beginning to feel the effects of her detachment in the complaints of several of her students. Naaden put her efforts to connecting with each student, each person, and striving to impact them positively. Some students were more accepting than others, but this change met with great approval.
The time to run for Senator came around again, and this time, age 36, Naaden landed a solid victory. She would serve in the Galactic Senate representing Alderaan for the next four years. While she enjoyed her time abroad, Naaden was beginning to miss the peaceful atmosphere of Alderaan, and also her students. Intending to retire back to her University, though somewhat uncertain at the choice, Naaden suspended her reelection as Senator. At the urging of several of her colleagues, Naaden ran for Head Chairman of the High Council of Alderaan, for she couldn't quite bring herself to retire politics. A more experienced candidate beat her, but only just. The re-election periods balanced so that Naaden, not quite ready to turn in her Senator's robes, either, was reelected to the position of Senator. At the end of her Senate term, four years later and aged 44, Naaden again ran for the position of Head Chairman. The votes were re-counted twice, but in the end, Naaden was the clear victor. She returned home to her beloved Alderaan.
Some supported her somewhat unorthodox political stances, and others opposed them as controversial and impractical. However, wherever her policies were implemented, they proved to take hold and thrive. She was a proponent of 'house-work', as she called it; eradicating old and irrelevant laws from the constitution and law books of Alderaan. If they were obsolete, they need not obstruct the view of the rest of the laws. The same went for old Government programs, relief aids and educational bills which had outlived their usefulness, and were only leeching money. She faced initial skepticism for this policy, for it would cause the loss of many jobs. It took several years for the senate to begin to vote with her, but once they did, the Government felt its pocket situation improve greatly. However, there were still many who did not appreciate this mode of government, and Naaden faced near-constant friction in the High Council. This served to simply thicken her skin.
Naaden would serve as Head Chairman for the next six years, serving 3 two-year terms. During this time, she found herself caring for the people one-on-one when she could. That was rarely practical, however. Naaden maintained contact with her parents, who were quite proud of the progress of her daughter. They would often come together on Holidays to discuss the well-being of the Galaxy. Naaden also found herself maintaining a working relationship with Boris: he was a marvelous contact when it came to statistics.
Even as these six years passed, Naaden grew weary of the responsibility of caring for an entire planet, and she voted to leave her position while she was still well-liked in the political world. Relatively, at least. And so she did not run for re-election, instead spending a year off, teaching in her beloved University. Naaden considered this to be the conclusion of her political career, and she convinced herself a retirement would be healthy.
However, Naaden found she still missed politics. It was, as she couldn't avoid seeing, her passion. Sub-sequentially, she decided to run for her once-favorite position; Senator. Her victory was again solid, for her opponent was inexperienced and lacked presence. At age fifty, she re-entered the political world, though her respite was brief.
Naaden would serve another 4-year term as senator, then be re-elected once more, another year bringing her to the age of fifty-five. Several scandals arose, but Naaden had always stuck to a policy of strict transparency and integrity, and her opponents could never gain any footing in their accusations.
Naaden had made many good friends over the years, both qualified advisers and plain-clothed professionals. She was very selective about who she associated herself with, and so gathered together an unofficial system of support; a Cabinet of sorts.
Nothing comes as a surprise to a Seasoned Senator, not even nomination for Surpreme Chancellor. When the former Chancellor, Aiden Baoont of Onderon, was assassinated, Naaden was a logical choice for the replacement. Her experience far outmatched that of her predecessor, and her supporters were hoping for a fresh perspective in the Chancellor's seat. Naaden also bore the charisma for the job, as well as the nerves of steel to adopt a potentially deadly occupation. She has striven to make the transition as smooth as possible, despite her colleague's insistence to increase security. Of course, there are always whispers as to who planned the assassination, and some have pointed fingers at Naaden, disregarding the fact that she has a complete, water-proof alibi. In any event, she's dealt with worse before, and is determined to wisely utilize her time as Chancellor to improve the Republic, and steel its defenses against the growing threat of the Sith. As to her success? Only time will tell...
