He barely heard the satisfying click of his assault rifle as the pelican raced over the treeline. The M5AB assault rifle was the standard weapon of any UNSC soldier. A good weapon, it got the job done. The 7.62 didn't have the stopping power that his pistol had though. At close range, one round was more than enough. He unholstered the pistol, checked the clip, and slid it back in with a click.
"Two minutes" came a voice over his comm
The man gave a mental nod as he ran a final system check for his suit. All systems were green, biometrics displayed at the corner of his HUD. One more minute until touchdown. He stood up, moving towards the exit ramp, grabbing a rail for support. A sudden rush of air tore through the pelicans bay as the ramp lowered. The pelican decreased altitude and then suddenly hovered over a clearing.
"Green light!Green light!Good luck"
Mitch, aka Spartan 066 jumped out of the pelican's bay to the ground. His rifle immediately came to bear, scanning the area for any hostiles. HUD showed no tangos but that didn't mean they weren't out there. The LZ was a good three clicks from the rebel base but he didn't become a spartan through carelessness.
He clicked his comm twice indicating the all clear. Two spartans had been designated for the current mission. Their mission was to eliminate a rebel leader who had recently been gaining large influence. Intel from ONI indicated that the leader resided in his HQ which just happened to be in the jungle. 066 had been on missions such as this for the last months. Honestly, he couldn't really understand why anyone would want to break off from the UN. The spartan wasn't paid to understand though, he had a mission to complete.
The spartan had to hand it to the rebels though. They had made a strategic stronghold out of their base. While the UNSC could have easily assaulted the place, it wouldn't have looked good. There would have been casualties, lots of bad press, all in all not desirable. Instead the Spartan IIs were commissioned for the job. They could complete it quickly, quietly, efficiently. Mitch waited for the green from his partner so they could proceed to the target.
