I was reading one of the essential guides to the SW universe and I discovered something interesting. Apparently communications since before the clone wars was very archaic and unreliable. It was made up of a bunch of relays and sending stations. Not unlike ye'old' telegraph sets. This is something we should take into account I think.

I agree. I believe we should implement that. It would help to allow for more mix-ups and the possibility of entire worlds to fall without anybody knowing.
Also, remember the Hyperspace Beacon.

Yes about that. In the KOTOR series they don't use Hyperspace beacons. Not sure on this. What does Wookieepedia say about it?
I was under the impression that the only thing keeping people from travelling to some of the systems in later starwars sagas was that the Galaxy was more or less un-explored.

Well, actually.... they do, just not in the same way that we use them.
If you recall in KOTOR II, the group goes to Nar Shaddaa and asks a Blind Sullustan to swap out their NavComp and their Codes.
NavComputers communicate with hyperspace beacons. If you were to lock a beacon to a specific code, it would refuse access to that ship. Basic Concept, really. Plus, we're somewhere in between, as always. We have to tweak the unexplored era to suit our needs.
