CEC LI-872-E Long Range High speed Interceptor
Length:75 feet
Width ( wingtip to wingtip): 43 feet
Height: 21 feet
Weight: 24 Tons Clean, 65 Maximum takeoff.
The LI-827 is a positively ancient craft, and has been the primary interceptor for the Jedi for the last 350 years, and that dosn't look to be changing any time soon. It was initially designed for the Republic army, to perform the job of an All weather interceptor for their ground and space forces. The fighter performed the duty famously , save for one major flaw. It was based upon an ancient interceptor, from a Correllian design that was found in the archives. The Correllians, who's motto on the ship was “ if it worked then, it'll work now” , worked.
The Li ( pronounced “Lee”) as it was called, was blisteringly fast, both in an atmosphere and in space, and was easily capable of reeling in and destroying the fast bombers of the Sith they were typically fighting. Its maneuverability was less than stellar, as it was designed for speed. The Le's shielding and armor was also sub-standard for a fighter of its size, the designers instead decided to save weight on them and put the biggest engines and reactor in they could.
Another major issue was the fact that it was next to impossible to fly. CEC tried to remedy this with a computer control system, but it ended up holding the pilots hand so much that the design's merits were negated. A CEC employee was quoted saying “ To fly her, you'd require a Jedi's reflexes and the courage of a Wookie.” after taking a ( rather sedate) test flight. Apparently, the Republic heard them and sent a new test pilot to fly the ship, a Jedi.
Initially the CEC engineers didn't want to take the computer controls off, but after some convincing, they did. And in the hands of a skilled pilot, like the Jedi, the ship handled like a much smaller one, and absolutely decimated the drones in combat drills. After the Jedi's report, the ship was taken on as the Jedi's ship of choice.
Over the next 350 years, the ship evolved and kept up with the current level of technology at the time. Parts went in and out, and the ships got new engines and reactors, and the Jedi got trained on them and learned to fly them, becoming legendary. Eventually the Jedi started modifying the Li's for their specific missions, removing the vast bulk of the weaponry and installing a class 4 hyper drive in the them. Their sensor range went from 400 000 km on the first generation models to just over 1 light year on the newest ones, and their jamming and ECM units became second to none under Jedi supervision and development. They are fully capable of blinding most ships while they find a way to run and escape.
That's not to say the Li's can't fight. They have quite an arsenal of weaponry at their disposal. From Long Range Anti Fighter (LRAF) Missiles to their 2 Gigawatt retractable particle cannons, they can put up a serious fight against most ships, and in the right hands can take on many smaller and more maneuverable fighters.
But the most interesting aspect of the Li is its Atmospheric maneuverability. It is unique in that it does not solely rely on a repulsion drive to stay aloft in an atmosphere, its wings provide the majority of lift above a certain speed, this also gives it stellar maneuverability, enabling it to be able to black out a jedi in atmospheric combat. The Pilots have to be careful of the Li's nasty tendency to do that.
All in all , the Li is a very good vessel for the Jedi. It is capable of performing a multitude of roles from general use ship to Interceptor to Atmospheric Fighter, it can do it all and do it well. Its 3 man ( Pilot, Weapon/Sensor/General Systems manager, Passenger) is quite spacious and comfortable. It is also safe, the entire cockpit module ejects as a unit that is able to re enter a planets atmosphere. Thus negating needing to wear pressure suits like most fighters. Its computer navigation system is stellar and has a 99.6% success rate with Hyperspace Codes, when they are used.
