Bio:
Early Life (birth-13)
Ralan Toraro was born on Ord Mantell to parents (Roh Dek-Ohv and Adé'nin Toraro) involved in illegal operations. They were drug dealers, and fairly successful ones, considering the lawless state of the planet. Ralan's childhood was rough. Adé'nin (mother) was the one who handled his formal education (read/write/etc), while Roh (father) continued his business. Roh never really cared about Ralan, viewing him as an anchor holding his girlfriend down, and often would get angry at Ralan. Especially when he was high. He believed the kid was useless, since he couldn't help out with anything.
Adé'nin quit using the drugs Roh and his ring were selling when Ralan was 2, seeing how it was affecting Roh and his behavior towards their son. After that, she cared for him as best she could, protect him from Roh's temper.
By the time Ralan was 7, Roh started having him help out with the ring. He mostly just followed Roh around, "learning the ropes". When he was 8, however, he began to have his own assignments. Small and easy at first, but jobs none-the-less.
Just before he turned 9, Roh suddenly announced they were moving. Business on Ord Mantell was slowing. They were going to move to the capital of crime; Nar Shaddaa. This was big. Roh's ring had been fairly big on Ord Mantell, but here on Nar Shaddaa, it was small in comparison with the other dealers. Roh had to shove his way into the circle. And things got more violent.
In this new world, rougher than the one he had known before (which he had thought was bad); Ralan would require a new batch of survival skills. Adé'nin was determined to teach him, and soon he was learning how to use a blaster pistol, pilot speeders, and speak huttese - a common language.
And Ralan learned another skill on his own, while helping out with the ring; thinking on his feet. He became an adept liar, and he learned how criminals did business.
Teen Years (13-16)[/u]
Over the years, Ralan became a key member of Roh's ring. Now that he was getting older, Roh started to give him more work. He was now "earning his keep". Ralan often did deliveries for the ring, as well as accompany Roh on trips to see other dealers. He also got in a good deal of deadly fire-fights. The criminals on Nar Shaddaa often fought each other, and since Roh's ring was smaller than the others, they were often picked on. But Ralan had developed into a fine pistoleer, and got out of them unscathed.
But when Ralan was 15, his life changed dramatically. Roh's new shipment of drugs arrived with a bomb. Roh was killed, along with several other key members of the ring. Adé'nin and Ralan weren't harmed
After that, the ring was disbanded. Adé'nin didn't want to take over, and there weren't any others with the capability. So the remaining ring members split up.
Adé'nin and Ralan took a public transport to Tatooine, where they would stay for a year. Neither of them was terribly saddened by Roh's death. Ralan had never been close to his father, and Adé'nin's relationship with him had deteriorated over the years. Her plan was to lay low on Tatooine indefinitely, until some opportunity presented itself.
The heat bothered Ralan. That was something he never got used to. Now that his father was dead, Ralan changed his name to Toraro - his mother's last name. And as the months slipped past with nothing to do but a cheap job at a near-by cantina, Ralan began to think about his own future. Adé'nin didn't need him to stick around, really. He began to pay more attention to spacer talk in the cantina he worked at, and when he turned 16, he got involved with a small gang of smugglers.
He convinced them to allow him to fly with them for a while, and even get a small percentage of their profits. They said they'd notify him when their next job came.
It was less than three days later.
Ralan packed up his things, said goodbye to his mother, and left. It was the last time he saw her.
Life as a Smuggler (16-20)
For the first time in his life, Ralan was off on his own. The smuggler gang was small, but diverse. The captain was a Duro with an ego the size of a star, and there was a Sullustan, a Neimoidian, and two humans, and even a Rodian. It was also Ralan's first experience being around different species for long periods of time. There had been several aliens in Roh's drug ring, but he rarely interacted with them.
The first run was a success, and despite being a bit useless, Ralan was allowed to stay on. Most of the gang didn't mind having a 16 year old kid around, and Ralan got along with most of them. He actually became good friends with the Sullastan, Som Navik.
After merely three runs together, Ralan Toraro was considered to be a solid member of the gang. Things went smoothly for about a year, and over that time, Ralan got the hang of how things worked. He even got some tips from the pilot on how to fly the freighter.
Nothing worth mentioning happened over the next couple years. Ralan lived the life of a smuggler. Sometimes business was good, sometimes it was bad. On one particular run, both Ralan and Som almost got kicked from the group for playing a practical joke on Hoolsar Domak, the captain. One of the two humans, Tirmí, didn't like Ralan. He tried to get him kicked from the gang again, but surprisingly, Lon Tod the Neimoidian stuck up for him. Timrí tried several times after that to discredit Ralan, but he never succeeded at booting him from the gang. Eventually, Timrí left, right in the middle of a complex operation. Doing so caused trouble for the run, and they had to drop their cargo. Tirmí was hated from then on.
By the time he was 19, Ralan was quite adept at the smuggling business. He knew how to avoid security, bluff, pilot a few starships, find contracts (mostly illegal), knew of several other players in the business, and was still a good shot with a pistol. And he had also picked up an enemy. Hyuda the Rodian had developed a hatred for young Ralan over the years. Timrí had been friends with Hyuda, and since Timrí was gone, Hyuda took over his spot as local trouble-maker.
Things got so bad between Hyuda and Ralan, eventually that Captain Domak had to separate them, only taking one member on a run at a time. He didn't want to kick one of them, as both were valuable members, Hyuda being a talented slicer, and Ralan being good to have around... cuz. After all, he was the best shot in the gang (even though he was the youngest), could pilot their air speeder, and was observant. At first, both had an equal amount of time sitting back in the ship hating the other, but then, Domak started to receive more legal jobs, and Hyuda's profession was less-necessary. Thus, the Rodian was the one being left behind more often.
Hyuda resented this. He decided to end the problem. Timrí had already tried and failed to get Ralan kicked from the gang, so he would try something else.
One day, a 20-year-old Ralan stepped out of his cabin to come face to face with Hyuda's hold-out blaster pistol. The Rodian smirked and was about to pop a one-liner when Ralan pistol-whipped him.
The blaster shot caused the other crew members to come running. Hyuda was dead with a blaster in his hand. It was apparent to the others what had happened, but the fact that it was self defense didn't make Captain Domak like it any better.
He kicked Ralan out of the gang, saying he should've done it a long time ago.
"Mek Mercs" (20)[/u]
Som Navik was miserable when Hoolsar Domak made Ralan leave. Over the past four years the two had become close friends. Som convinced the captain to reconsider, but when they tried to find him, Ralan was gone.
They had been on Tatooine when it happened, ironically enough. Ralan found himself right back where he had started, and he didn't like it. He was angry, and wanted to move on.
He went to the nearest cantina, intending to find another job. The idea of joining another spacer gang didn't appeal to him, and he wasn't interested in staying local, either; the Tatooine heat still annoyed him. Inside the cantina, a table caught Ralan's eye. Two guys were sitting at it laughing lightly together, and a very un-official hand-made sign stood on it facing the crowd. Written in basic, huttese, and some other language Ralan didn't know was the word RECRUITING. Ralan went over.
It turned out that it was a small group of mercenaries that were looking for more members. Ralan joined.
The two recruiters were Gjamie Falmuri (human male, few years older than Ralan), and Macl'una (green Twi'lek male). They were members of the "Mek Mercs" (formerly called "Mek's Mercs"), and were surprisingly cheerful and friendly. Completely opposite of what Ralan would've expected. They asked a few questions regarding his background, and then approved him and gave Ralan a docking bay number to meet at. From there, he was transported into a whole new world.
The flight was a short one, considering the Mek Mercs' flagship was in orbit, but it was an enlightening experience for Ralan never-the-less. There were a handful of other recruits on-board as well. Apparently, Gjamie and Macl'una (along with a few others) were on a short recruiting run, and then they were leaving to the Mid Rim to find some work.
Once on the ship, Ralan and the other new recruits went through an initiation program, where the leader, General Mek, told them how things worked. It was fairly straight-forwards, and Ralan was satisfied that he hadn't messed up by joining. After the speech, General Mek had the recruits prove themselves. If they didn't pass, then they'd have to pay to either get some training, or get shipped out. And if you didn't have the proper gear, you'd have to buy some with your own money, or operate without it (which they didn't recommend).
Ralan impressed them with his pistoleering skills, but totally failed the melee test, in which he had to fight Macl'una with training blades. He passed the rifle test with no praise.
After the initiation, they were taken to the barracks (note, this is all inside their flagship) and assigned bunks. Ralan's happened to be next to Gjamie's. The two of them became friends, and later on, best friends.
Ralan had some savings, which he spent on buying equipment from Mek's armoury. He also wanted to get the training, but didn't have enough funds. So Ralan resorted to haggling - something he was good at. He eventually came to a deal that they would deduct the cost for the training (plus a little extra) from his first paycheck in exchange for getting the training now. The mercenaries were skeptical at first, worried that Ralan might die and not get paid, but he convinced them that "with their training, there would be a very low chance of him dying".
Life as a Mercenary (20-25)[/u]
The Mek Mercenaries were hired to do some extermination work on Nal Hutta. Ralan was assigned to the same tin (the Mek Mercs' word for squad) as Gjamie. Their objective was to seize control of a small mining complex in the middle of a swamp, shut it down completely, and destroy it.
The Mek Mercs. did what they had to do with relative ease; the guard droids were cheap, and not very good at their job. Ralan performed well enough, though he didn't snag any kills for himself (well, if guard droids count as kills).
From then on, Ralan worked harder than he had ever done before. He worked out more, trained more, and even tried to learn how to use a vibro blade. Macl'una attempted to mentor him a bit, but it didn't last very long. It just seemed to be an area Ralan wasn't capable of mastering. He preferred to shoot people rather than stab them. He was getting along just fine with his rifle. He and Gjamie would target practice together, along with several other mercenaries, and he learned alot from their "Storm-the-Building" training room.
Several years passed, in which Gjamie got promoted to tin leader (equivalent of sergeant), and Macl'una got transferred into the squad. Ralan also adapted to a soldier's life alot more. He got into the habit of going for a drink every night with his friends. And then the drink turned into two, and then three. On occasion, when things were going rough, Ralan would often get completely intoxicated, and then he'd get in trouble. But he always operated well during their contracts (at least when required to).
The age of 25 brought another change to Ralan's life.
