Planet Name: Astrum V
^ Click for larger version. Only continent of Astrum V. Drawn by Kellaishleya. (Dull, I know...)
Planet Type: Terrain and Ocean
Habitable: Very
System: Astra (Nearest planet on SWU map: Lwhekk. Outer Rim.)
Terrain Overview: Astrum V is on the small side, but dense, with a gravitational pull similar to Earth's. One half of the planet is covered with a single, massive continent. A cluster of mountains surrounds the North Pole, while the continent extends down to take up most of the Eastern Hemisphere. The continent does not reach the southern pole, which is instead coated by a perpetual polar ice-cap, almost an extension of the continent. The Northern mountains reach out with two arms that rim the east and west sides of the continent, going 2/3 of the way to the equator. At this latitude, both sides feature a coastal rainforest. The southwest coast then becomes tropical beach, moving southward into a bitter-cold sand desert. The south-east side features a massive coastal swamp. The center of the continent is dominated by plains, which feature both rolling hills and great rivers. The rest of the planet is covered by a huge ocean.
Notable Geographic Features: On the opposite side of the planet, in the midst of the ocean, three islands can be seen; the one in the center the largest, flanked by two smaller ones. These can only be seen from space, and have never been explored.
Climate: Climate and meteorology vary by terrain. However, daytime winds on the plains usually blow toward the center of the continent, and nighttime winds usually blow outward, due to the layout of the land and water.
Capital City: Lawaailig
Major cities: (Astrum V has only one City)
Sentient species: Nihran, Graarl (Click for links)
Non-Sentient species of note:
These massive beasts are distant relatives of the Graarls and Queents, and are built like tanks. Standing six feet at the shoulder, they feature heavily plated armor, the only weak spot at the neck. Semi-sentient, the smaller females cluster in packs, while the males are more lone-wolves, so to speak. Their hid is usually some shade of gray. Quadropeds, they're somewhat slow, but can certainly move when they like to. Massive, jagged beaks serve as their main weapon, along with large, hooked talons on every toe. Temperamental and moody, messing with Kruunts is a deadly idea.
Habitat: Forests, Mountain Foothills, Plains.
These small creatures flit around from place to place in flocks, and are definitely avian. Distant relatives of the Graarls and Kruunts, they share the same generally six-limbed structure (four legs, two wings), but are much smaller than their cousins, standing only 2 feet at the shoulder. Very high metabolisms mean these little omnivores are almost constantly eating. They are a food of choice for both the Nihran, and the Graarls.
Mammilian avians whose colorful feathers are often used in art. Hunted by the Nihran, and eaten as a delicacy.
Hulking mammilian herbivores, the Quarinuu live in herds. They migrate around the central plains, hunted by both the Nihran and the Graarls. They are coated in shaggy fur, and the males grow massive sets of webbed antlers, which may reach a full 12 feet from tip to tip. These antlers play a minor part in Nihran art.
Astrum V is the fifth in a string of six planets, (Astrum I-VI) all orbiting the star Astra. In the era before the initial rise of the Republic, a forgotten Arkanian research project placed a new species on the budding planet; one that would eventually become the Graarls, Kruunts, and Queents. Not long after, the Nihran species achieved sentience.
These two sentient species lived at peace with each other, and in balance with the planet's wilds for many years. Finally, territory disputes led to a long and bloody war between the Nihran and the Graarls, which almost led to the extinction of the Nihran people, and would have, if not for the discretion of the Graarls. A tentative peace reigned for many years after, eventually culminating in the return of border skirmishes, and finally a treaty uniting the two peoples. Over time, this treaty evolved into a close symbiotic partnership between the two species.
122 years before present, a starship landed aboard Astrum V's surface. Through negotiation with the Nihran and Graarls, these enterprisers were allowed to build one city, and one city only, which would serve as a stopping point for this enterprise's outer-rim shipping exploits. Locals may come and leave the city as they please, though any visitors are required to stay within the city's wall. No violators have survived to tell the tale.
At present day, this capital city, Lawaailig remains about 50 years behind the rest of the Galaxy when it comes to technology, and about 1 year behind when it comes to news. The city's primary function remains as a place to rest and restock for traveling merchants, and a small economy is maintained, including the buying and selling of Nihran art. Overall, the local communities exist and remain almost entirely independent of Lawaailig.
