Species Name:Gar/ Gar Naal (Singular/Multiple)
Species Type: Crustacean
Planet of Origin: Aanaarden (Uninhabitable)
Average Maximum age: Ruw- 70 Otua-90
Age of Maturation: 12
Average Height: Ruw- 7’5” Otua- 5’5”
Average Weight: Ruw- 230 Otua- 165
Notable biological features: Look like giant bugs, 2-4 antennae, twin face tentacles
Number of limbs and Type:Six limbs total
Two Legs: (Varying by subspecies)
Four Arms: Two proportionate arms with three fingered hands
Two smaller arms, tucked under the “rib” cage section of the torso with two fingers (no thumb)
Appearance: The Gar Naal come in two subspecies, though the pair look very similar. Each one has a very hard exoskeleton, able to resist a couple blaster shots, and even a glancing blow from a lightsaber. It’s theorized they received this from generations of mineral rich diet. Their blood is a murky, pale orange color, and smells pungent and salty.
All Gar Naal have double jointed legs, and incredible jumping prowess with these legs. Despite being crustaceans, their spindly bodies give them the appearance of hoppers and crickets. Each Gar Naal also has at least two antennae, perched on top of their head. Also, even though they are crustaceans, they have large, very expressive, almost mammalian eyes that see into mid-infrared.
Their mouths are very interesting indeed: Composed of two large jaws, the upper part has a pair of mandibles perched to the side of the mouth. Gar Naal have long, thin, black tongues, but are rarely seen. Probably one of the most unique features of this species is the two olfactory tentacles that hang from the middle of the face, just under the eyes, down. These tentacles usually hang limp if nothing is enticing the Gar Naal. But if something does appeal to them, the tentacles will rub and twist together, which also happens to be an expression of pleasure from a Gar Naal.
The Gar Naal’s antennae are very sensitive, able to pick up presences, sound, even body heat, applying to their infrared vision. The Gar Naal are also able to communicate with one another through these antennae, able to project their emotions and thoughts- a big part of their language.
Young Gar Naal, also known as Naalings, look almost exactly like their grown counterparts, except their features seem a bit scrunched, and their nasal tentacles are much shorter. Naalings are hatched from eggs that the mother lays, and the father fertilizes.
Culture:
There are many faces of the Gar Naal. Whether Ruw or Otua, they are a very, very inquisitive race, always seeking to try and understand their surroundings. Just in the Ruw’s situation, more times than not, they just get frustrated and break whatever peaks their curiosity. Between the two subspecies, Ruw and Otua, there used to be deadly a tension. For thousands of years, the hyper intelligent and physically smaller Otua, lived in gigantic floating cities that hovered miles above the planet’s surface. These were known as Luch’zoen, or “Sky Huggers” in Garl- the language the Gar Naal speak. Mostly the Otua lived in the Luch’zoen, part of the reason the Ruw held so much hostility over them. But, in very, very rare occasions, there is what was known as Tukte’len, which were Ruw who are above the normal intelligence cut compared to their kin. These Tukte’len could try to pass a series of mental and personality tests given by the Otua for passage into a Luch’zoen. Even when in the city, Tutke’len were always heavily surveyed and watched.
However, in the past three hundred years, Gar Naal culture has had an extreme reform. The species has wasted their planet, almost all plant life having died, and making it uninhabitable. And so, the Otua’s beloved Luch’zoen were outfitted for space flight to sustain not only the Otua- but the Ruw as well. At first things were rocky, but these days, the two have gained a codependent, and cooperative relationship.
All Gar Naal are amazing jumpers, the Otua able to leap up to fifteen feet unhindered, and the Ruw an astonishing thirty feet when unhindered. It is a bragging right for Gar Naal to state how far he/she has leaped, stating it as “Flew” when talking casually about it.
Ex: “I flew 30 hops one time”
Meaning that they had jumped 30 feet. Gar Naal refer to feet as “hops”, even when talking about the size of something, not just distance. Their muscle structure under the exoskeleton that allows such amazing jumps also applies to the Gar Naal martial arts- Fik’sbeen. Using arms for blocking or grappling, the Gar Naal will then use their mighty legs to kick at the opponent, delivering devastating, possibly bone breaking attacks. It is not uncommon for a Gar Naal to be killed instantly by a kick that lands right, rupturing any organs behind the blow.
Despite the two species differences, there are groups on both subspecies sides that try to get the Ruw and Otua to coexist, primarily the Otua working to aid the Ruw. Unfortunately for the Gar Naal species, the Ruw outnumber the Otua 125-1. This has led to massive overcrowding of the Luch’zoens, to the point where the villages within the Luch’zoens are nothing more than slums built from the trash and junk that has accumulated over the years. The Ruw aren’t intelligent or caring enough to change this, content with digging through and occasionally eating garbage.
The Gar Naal Military is all one cohesive unit, consisting of an army and a navy. Both Otua and Ruw participate in the military, Otua generally taking the positions of strategists, engineers, medics, and pilots. Ruw make up the bulk of the armed force’s soldier ranks, the headstrong and brave warriors highly trained with both their martial arts, and weaponry.
And this brings us to one of the most fascinating things about the Gar Naal. Their technology, when it comes to ships, weapons, and other war-like machinery, it is DNA coded to only respond to a Gar Naal’s DNA. This is done by the Otua actually using Gar Naal DNA and infusing it with a material known as Slijk. Slijk is a thick, clear, goop-like substance that used to pool in the mountains of Aanaarden- but before leaving the planet, the Gar Naal collected as much of it as they could, and store it in a single heavily guarded Luch’zoen. Slijk when infused with nanites made by the Otua, then smelt with the materials used in their technology, allow a Gar Naal to become one with whatever they’re piloting, be it ship or machine. Using the Slijk the connection is made between Gar Naal and machine, the pilot “feeling” everything that is done to the ship, be it hull damage, or internal workings failure. This allows Gar Naal to be very talented and skillful pilots.
But starships and fighters are not what Gar Naal pride their pilots with, it’s with their greatest achievement, known as Harnas- or “Strider”.
Each Harnas is unique to the pilot, and can only be piloted by that single Gar. The process is known as imprinting, in which the Gar will actually use pieces of it's own antennae in the cockpit of it, where the antennae plugs "jack" in. But all Harnas start from the same basic two legged, two armed model.
A Harnas can have up to four weapon types total- one mounted on the forearms between the three digit graspers and elbow on each arm, and two on the "torso" of the Harnas. The weaponry is decided by the pilot, depending on the Harnas' purpose.
Ex: Z'oon's Harnas
To be a pilot of a Harnas is a great honor, as it takes a lot of skill, and incredible mental capacity to control. The signs of an Al’Harnas- a “Strider Pilot”- include what looks like a metal rimmed inlet on the back of the skull, and tiny metal plugs on the end of their antennae. The less noticeable part is how an Al’Harnas carries themselves, moving in very steady, sure, calm motions, which is part of the training to become one. Those plugs and inlet allow the Gar Naal to connect to the Harnas using their very brain, in tandem with the Slijk, allows the pilot to literally see as the Harnas’ receptors do, and sense as their antennae do, making their motor movements transferred to the machine instead. These Al’Harnas are the first, and final line of defense for the Gar Naal- and to become one is almost to sign a death warrant, if the Harnas is dealt a “killing” blow, it will more often than not put the pilot in a coma, if not outright kill them.
One thing that unites both Ruw and Otua however, is their love for their young. Every Gar Naal child is treasured, the species on both sides thinking that the children are the future, and possibly, one day, the ones responsible for completely reuniting the species. All Gar Naal young- or Naalings as they are called- are highly inquisitive and feisty, often getting into trouble or breaking things.

*Gar Naal religion is unique. It comes in two sides. Instead of worshiping any sort of deities, this species worships their Ancestors and the very ships that harbor them. For more faith related prayer, Gar Naal pray to A'Staal, or "The Steel". Due to their inability to create new technology from their lack of natural resources, Gar Naal tech has recently ground to a halt. However, every once in a very rare while, a Gar Naal is deemed a Paragon- an Ancestor incarnate- they receive this status by contributing greatly to the Fleet's technology using what little resources they have. When a Paragon is named, they're name and status change. Considered the best of the best, a Paragon's name is put together, and it's children will adopt this name as their new surname.
Ex: Paragon Huy'Pau
Surname: Huypau
Nem'Reste- The first Ancestor, an Otua, she was the Gar Naal who designed, and helped build the first Luch'zoen.
Wete'Dweg- The second Ancestor, also an Otua, he perfected the Slijk core still used today to power the Harnas.
Drie'Derde- This Ancestor is an Otua who created the first translator program that has since been perfected.
Vier'De- The first Ruw Ancestor, he created the Gar Naal fighting style used to this day.
Jivf'Vij- Another Ruw Ancestor, she was the first one to be allowed onto a Luch'zoen thanks to her theory of hydro-recycling- which now allows the Luch'zoen to run on a constant source of water.
Zes'Eerse- This Otua Ancestor was the first Al'Eerse- and founder of it. Legend says that Zes'Eerse actually became one with her Harnas- a shining metal Goddess. All Al'Eerse pray to her before battle.
Nev'Ez- An Otua Ancestor who developed a way to synthesize protein, creating an easy source of food for his people.
Acht'Tste- This Ruw Ancestor was a famed gunsmith, creating over three-hundred weapon designs, most considered advanced for her time. During this day and age though, only one is still in use, the Roer.
Nege'Nende- One of the most celebrated Ancestors- this Otua Al'Harnas was the first Gar Naal to encounter an "alien" and defeat it in battle.
Tien'Loot- The final Ancestor, this Otua was a mere child, but she was a genius even among the Gar Naal. She was the one to give the Gar Naal the calculations for space travel at age twelve.
Staf'Sha- A High General of the Gar Naal, this Paragon lead the Gar Naal to victory against a fleet of unknown enemies.
Ove'Rhemd- This Paragon cured a plague that started to spread across the fleet- theory is that prolonged space flight was the cause.
Za'Ak- The only female Paragon, she invented the Harnas weapon Nagelen.
"Steel be with you."- Common "good luck"
"By the Ancestors!"- A statement of shock
"Nege'Nende bless your aim."- a battle blessing
"Zes'Eerse guide me."- A very personal prayer for Al'Eerse
"May the Steel accept you."- Said before killing a foe
**
"Blarg"- Most common, but crude, Gar swear word, used in almost any context
"Uru'tu"- Used as both a "hello" and "goodbye" to friends/family
"Uru"- Non-personal/casual version of Uru'tu
"Chi'kti"- A cat call, used by males towards attractive females
"Itou"- A derogatory word for a weak indiviual
"Yi'ta!"- A victory cry, also used when excited
History: Since the great migration from Aanaarden, the Gar Naal have been more or less forced to work together now- or risk extinction. And so, to the Ruw’s disgust, the Otua once more took up the mantle of leading their people, with the Ruw acting as defenders and workers. At first it was rocky, riots and fighting common the first hundred years, but as things began to get worse, they needed to unite and put things right. The Luch’zoen have clustered out in space in the unknown regions, several of them recently designated for agricultural uses- the Gar Naal sporting a diet of mostly fruits and vegetables, but also with many vitamins and nutrient paste.
After the rioting and the differences between the two subspecies were ironed out- they Gar Naal focused on survival, everything from keeping the Luch’zoen in tact, to keeping their military in form and ready to attack or defend. The Otua do know that the species can’t survive like this forever, and routinely send small scouting ships into known space, searching for habitable planets to move to. One has even reached the Republic about twenty years ago, though the language barrier is one that has been difficult to cross- both the single Otua of the group and Republic xenobiologists working together to make a program of the Gar Naal language and ways for them to communicate.
There has been one other contact with those in known space- and that is actually the Mandalorians- a Gar Naal ship having crash landed on Concord Dawn. There was only one survivor- luckily it was an Otua. This Otua’s history, and how the Mandalorians and him have gotten along is a tale for another time. {Gonna make him eventually}
Once the language barrier has been bridged between the Otua and the Republic, negotiations of colonizing a planet will most likely happen. However, the Otua have began sending more and more ships out, allowing them to start a new life wherever they might land.
