His curly brown-turning-grey hair is always washed and combed, his nails are trimmed and clean, his facial hair is neat, and his clothes are free of dirt and grime (at least when he first touches down on a planet). He knows he will never be mistaken for a dashing prince, but he takes the time to take care of his appearance. He is always ready with a smile that wrinkles the corner of his dark brown eye and a welcome tone in his smooth, warm voice. These efforts may be undermined (or to some certain people, maybe enhanced) by his obvious cybernetic prosthetics. A large optical replacement takes up a good portion of the right side of his face (along with the burnt chunk of what remains of his ear and the scarification on his lower scalp) and his right arm is completely mechanical. His clothing is understated and practical, his rough garments covered with a set of light scout armour under a dark brown leather trench coat cinched at the waist with a utility belt. Weathered boots don his feet, with his heavy plaster pistol at his waist and a sleek flechette launcher strapped to his right thigh. Personality Profile First and foremost, Willam Scathe is a talk first, shoot later kind of guy. He would much rather blather and charm his way out of trouble than use violence. With that being said, he is not opposed to utilising violence, he just prefers not to. And he is quite a capable combatant, being a fine shot with a blaster pistol and deceptively resilient to injury. Despite his flippant and laid-back attitude, Willam is a tough customer. He has taken an immense amount of punishment in his lifetime and cheated death on several occasions through little more than his utter refusal to lay down and die. On more than one occasion an enemy has beaten him down, only for Willam to push himself right back up and snatch victory for himself. This attitude has taken its toll on his body, culminating in two prosthetics for his right eye and arm, though the damage is far from only physical; his willingness to lie, charm, trick, steal, cheat and seduce all stem from his desire to better his chances in life. There are few barriers that he will not cross to come out ahead, but there is one thing that he will never do: break his word. Once Willam has given a promise he will never go back on it, even if it costs him his profit margins, his life, or even worse... his ship. So naturally, he is very reluctant to give a promise to just anyone and if he does he is very careful about how he words it. Under all the smooth talk, cynical philosophies and questionable ethics, Willam is at his core a tired man. World-weary to the point of never wanting to stay in one place for long for fear of putting down roots, he continues on not for the hope of a better tomorrow, or to fulfill a dream of retirement or companionship, but to simply spite life, death, and anyone else who thinks they can take a single damn thing from him and walk away. Still, whenever he encounters people who are decent folk or have treated him with respect and/or kindness, he can show a disarmingly genuine softer side not often seen under the easy smiles and honeyed words he normally presents, as evidenced by the camaraderie he shares with Odd, his droid companion. Though his loyalty is next to impossible to earn as opposed to renting it for credits, when it is given freely it is stronger than durasteel. Background Father • Brarg Fletcher (deceased) Mother • Lilian Fletcher (deceased) Siblings • N/A Other Important Connections • Ylva Vuk: Casual fling, occasional war criminal Overall History • Willam Scathe, born Morril Fletcher, was brought into the world on the planet of Coruscant, down in the underworld of that planet-spanning cityscape. There, the young Morril was quickly introduced to a life of crime when his father, a hired thug, was killed by a rival swoop gang when Morril was fifteen. The boy quickly found himself conscripted, where he showed a surprising natural charm that disarmed many targets of his gangs' attention. At the age of nineteen, another inter-gang clash left him just barely alive, while his peers were not so lucky. After recovering, he decided that if he was going to die violently anyway it might as well be for something with a bit more meaning than brawling for a small scrap of turf, so Morril signed up with the Republic military and got off-world to find some real purpose. For a decade, Morril served on the front lines of the war. He proved himself not only a popular soldier but a remarkably hard person to kill, even surviving an artillery blast that cost him his eye. Eventually, he climbed the ranks and became a non-commissioned officer in a Recon squad. On a particularly brutal war front, he and his squad were attached to a pair of Jedi, a master and her padawan, in the field investigating Sith activity. Out in the middle of no-man's-land they were ambushed by Imperial troops and a Sith Lord, as the intelligence that had lead them to the location had been planted information to isolate and kill the Jedi master. The struggle was vicious and half of Morril's squad and the Jedi master herself were slain but the skirmish was won, the Jedi and Sith dealing each other a deathblow. With their numbers depleted and the mission a bust, Morril made the decision to retreat to base to inform their superiors of the ambush. During the hike back to base, the padawan, traumatised by the powers the Sith Lord had wielded and witnessing his master get cut down, snapped and attacked the surviving Recon troopers in the night. Morril woke up to find the young Jedi killing the last man on his squad and attempted to defend himself. The fight was swift, ending with him losing his arm to the Jedi's lightsaber and the padawan dying to a quick barrage of blaster fire in the act of removing the limb. Patching his wound up as best as he could with the simple tools available from the combined medkits of his fallen comrades and the dead Jedi, Morril was just able to stumble back to Republic lines before the shock finally caused him to pass out. He was treated and fixed up with another cybernetic replacement. However, the incident with the Jedi and Sith had finally pushed Morril's tolerance for the war and its principles past breaking point and, when in transit for re-assignment, he deserted the army. Morril abandoned his name and duty and escaped somewhere he knew he would get lost in: Nar Shaadda. Falling back on the harsh lessons of his youth in the underworld of Coruscant, the newly christened Willam Scathe found work initially as a bounty hunter, gaining minor reputation for bringing in most of his targets alive. Over the years, he patiently built up his funds and favours until, one night, he fought with a rival in a game of chance and won a ship. A beaten up, nearly derelict ship, but a ship nonetheless. Calling in his favours with a mechanic, Willam had the vessel fixed up and used almost all of his money outfitting himself for a new occupation. Armaments, supplies, and other such gear. He even managed to come into possession of a funny little hoverdroid, who's previous owner never even realised it was missing until Willam was off-world. Now able to travel at his leisure and cash-poor, Captain Willam Scathe set out on his new life as a spacer with enthusiasm, bouncing from port to port, world to world, life to life. After some years living in relative comfort drifting across the galaxy, Willam took on a job transporting some questionable cargo from an orbital station above Teth to Corellia. The job swiftly turned sour, with himself and two other spacers trapped inside the station by a violent mob out to kill them and take back the cargo. Though able to escape unscathed, Willam was decidedly shaken and chose to rid himself of the item in question via incineration inside a nearby sun. Low on funds and needing to find something to do, the captain once more took to the Holonet to find work and discovered a relief mission to Bothawui that paid nicely. During this job, Willam met Ylva Vuk and the two seemingly hit it off well enough for her to suggest he give her a tour of his cockpit. After this pleasant distraction was concluded, the captain brought the Lathspell out of hyperspace and straight into a pitched battle against a small pirate fleet. Willam's expert flying was more than up to the task of keep himself and his erstwhile compatriots from becoming Void blown dust until the rest of the convoy arrived, and Ylva directed him to follow the first supply shuttle down. On the surface, it soon become clear that the pirates had sent a group to follow them and, backed into a corner, Ylva revealed her true colours as an Archeri Chorus operative. Again, Willam was able to escape from the tense confrontation with his hide intact, as well as with proof of Ylva's true allegiance, and made his way to Nar Shaddaa to see if he might be able to salvage something from the mess he seemed unable to extract himself from. |
