Awesome discussion. xD
It's fun to be a writer, and a gamer, and know about both creative processes, because then you can tell where there was effort and inspiration, and where there... Wasn't.
As far as story went, KotOR was solid. Any plot holes were overcome by the compelling nature of the characters. Each one had a story -- a story you wanted to learn.
I played as a female Revan, and the non-canonical version even benefitted from this. You basically had to bend over backwards to get him to tell you his story -- but it was worth it.
Atton Rand would be the comparable character in the second, as far as plot devices go. He actually had a pretty interesting past -- but he tells you all at once. Kotor 2 was lacking in the allure of the chase. Amnesia works in a game like that, because it keeps the player guessing.
Kotor 2's plot was probably better suited for literature -- bit that's the problem. It was not implemented into the game in a way that worked.
The other problem was, the plot was only half-baked. There are tons of files embedded in the game's program resources, created for plotness that never was to be, since the game was rushed. That soured it for me -- the way the flesh of the plot seemed lopped on, rather than artfully sculpted.
If KotOR 2 were ever finished properly, I daresay it'd have a chance of surpassing the first in all arenas. Sadly, as-is, it does not.
