Biography: Both of kara's parents are native Kuati born and considered members of the local elite. Her father Vadir Tidwell served nearly thirty years in the republic navy before, while her mother Serine was a doctor working for most of her life aboard star ships or stations. Both retired when Sereine became pregnant with the child that would become kara. Initially after kara's birth both her parents slipped back into jobs associated with their talents with Vadir taking a position with the Kuat security forces and her mother accepting an offer at a local clinic. Up until turning seven kara was a relatively normal if sheltered girl who attended a local private academy where she excelled and enjoyed her gymnastics class.
However, her parents longed to return to space and while they had tried to put the wanderlust behind them for the good of kara in the end it won. They took their savings and a rather hefty investment from family purchased a motley collection of breaker ships and freights officially creating a new company T/S Salvage. Unwilling to part with their daughter despite the kind offers from their extended family vadir and serine decided to dis-enroll their daughter after the completion of her third year of school and with the help of a tutor home-school the young six year old aboard the center of the small flotilla the Sea-spirit.
The Sea-spirit was a heavy freighter modified into a makeshift mother ship for the small fleet of short ranged breaker ships and light freighters. The central cargo bay of the vessel had been modified to serve as living areas for the ship's crew as well as the crew of the smaller breaker vessels and the small number of defense fighters. The ship was ultimately rather crowded with almost three dozen men, women, and even some children being packed into the tight confines of the ship for weeks at a time. Kara and the other children were cared for as well as shipborne children could be and kara herself was generally well liked by the ships crew particularly by the ships defense pilots, both former republic pilots, and the chief engineer.
Vis'ti an elderly verpine served aboard as the ships chief engineer and tended to dote over the spirit's engine core like most would over a child. She was also a well traveled being and would at time spend hours sprawling stories off as she tinkered with this or that on the engines when given company. Kara and her best friend on the vessel Kyle a human boy originating originally from Bespin could often be found patching Vis'ti and listening to her stories before while the elder verpine gave them small jobs often dull-drum jobs such as greasing the widgets, but over the years they grew to greater jobs though neither was ever officially entrusted with the care of any mechanical system aboard.
Life aboard a star ship is not so different than that upon a planet or station. Sure the sights outside the windows change more often, but other than that life stayed more or less the same for kara. She had class ate dinner with her parents read and from time to time helped Vis'ti or the ships pilots when she wasn't playing with kyle. Occasionally the ship would dock with stations or land on planets and kara could visit them with her parents or crew members her parents trusted. Those were the only times ship board life tended to show it's effects as the young girl often tired easily on full gravity stations and planets after spending so long on a ship running under low gravity.
Kara was seven when her brother was born. Micheal was a fairly sickly child when he was born and being aboard a converted freighter the ship didn't have the necessary equipment to care for him and other arrangements had to be made. Serein ended up taking micheal back to stay with extended family back on Kuat while vadir stated with kara aboard the Sea Spirit and kara being the young girl of seven she was at the time blamed her young brother for the absence of her mother over the next three years.
The next years went over as a normal path with the ship spending most of it's time on the edge of the corporate systems. Kara's day to day activities continued as they had the entire time she had dwelt on the ship. In the morning she attended a small class aboard the ship and in the afternoon she played with the other children or helped Vis'ti down in engineering.
Her mother returned to the vessel as it laid in the orbital docks above Mannan on the day before Kara's ninth birthday. Until that day Kara had never met in person the freckled little boy that was her brother. Much of he earlier teenage years were spent disliking her little brother, while she never admitted such you kara blamed the small pale boy for "stealing" her mother from her and often treated the small weak boy poorly until she neared her older teens. This is something that still causes the now adult kara no small about of shame and has made her adult relationship with Micheal strained and often difficult.
Her father began pulling on the young girl to be more helpful aboard the vessel as she entered into her mid teens, first having the girl put her effort into helping the salvage teams with systems and later by actually having a girl of a mere seventeen years of age lead salvage teams onto derelict craft. It was clear to most aboard the ship that her parents were grooming the girl to be their primary successor to the company, but these plans would change to a degree when Kara was nineteen.
While exploring a system on the edge of the mid rim the Sea Spirit came under attack by pirates high above a lightly colonized moon. After several hours of hit and run attacks the pirates broke and ran for a type, but the Sea Spirit was mortally wounded as it slowly fell out of orbit towards the world below them. The crew a few dozen rushed to the escape pods jettisoning out from the ship and spiraling downward to the red, blue, and green globe below them.
Kara was in the engineering department when the large bulkheads started slamming shut on the dieing vessel. Those massive walls of durasteel separated here from her parents and brother forcing her to abandon the ship with Vis'ti and the small crew of engineers. Their pod rocketed trough the air coming to crash heavily forested area wracked with canyons on a northern island of the planet. The pod hit ground hard ripping trough canopies and tree trunks before finally crushing into a cliff face.
Kara was one of the few left uninjured in the crash thanks to her position to the rear of the escape pod with two of the crew up at the nose dieing in the impact. Of the nine remaining in the pod only kara and three others could still travel with little little effort. In the first days kara put he efforts into building a shelter for the group before. After a week no one had come to the crash site and the crew found the emergency transponder unrepairable. Kara volunteered to go out with one of the older engineers to try and find a settlement using data scans pulled from one of the data cores on the escape pod. It took them several days, but eventually the pair did find a small mining camp on the slopes of a mountain range and managed to get rescuers to return to the down pod. Unfortunately all the team found was a crushed shelter and seven missing people.
The local authorities believed that rebels were responsible for the attack when they returned kara to the planetary capital to meet with the remainder of the ship's crew. They claimed to have continued looking, but no sign of the missing crew ever appeared and eventually the remaining crew left the planet. Kara and her family returned to Kuat for a period of time while her parents mulled over weather or not to return to space. Kara for her part mourned for her missing mentor. At twenty-one kara was officially out of work and was considering enlisting with the Kuati PDF. In the in-between period here parents ran a company doing EVA repairs on the large bulk ships that often stopped at kuat, but after a little more than a year they decided they would purchase a new vessel to continue their company. Her brother had chosen to remain on kuat with family wanting little to do with being back on a salvage ship. Kara on the other hand they had hoped would join them and they offered her an engineering position on the ship. The girl however was looking for at this point more distance from her parents having spent her whole life within walking distance of one or both of them. A compromise of sorts was reached however when one of the lined up scouting pilots pulled out of the company and kara convinced her parents to allow her to run the ship.
Roleplay Sample: Kara had her face tilted upwards as she rested on a low platiod bench along a path cutting trough a market she was visiting letting the sun warm her face. She had chosen to visit Zeltros while the endeavor underwent repairs after her bright idea to poke around a asteroid field. Her face scrunched up a little at the memory, she had lost a good astromech in the effort the poor little guy got caught in between two stones and was crushed before kara noticed. The young woman was not looking forward to replacing Rolly, but knew she needed a droid to take over his job.
She tilted her head down as she opened her eyes and took in the sights around here. The cross road's was busy with people and the area was loud with the noise of people going about their tasks one of the reasons Kara had chosen it in fact after nearly two months sniffing around the inner rim she craved the sounds of people. She smiled out a pair of younger teens who were looking at her oddly probably wondering about the clothes she was wearing before she stood up. The public shuttle to a local museum would be leaving soon and she didn't want to miss it.
