Name:
Francisco "Franc" Afflaen
Race:
Human
Age:
25
Birthplace:
Curamelle, Corulag
Allegiance:
Republic
Status:
Soldier
Rank:
Lieutenant
Height/Weight:
5 Feet 11 Inches/164 LBS.
Appearance:
A fairly average looking Human for being in his mid 20's, he has a very rigid posture. Usually clean-shaven, he tends to keep his uniform and equipment in perfect shape. While he is by no means heavily-built, he is in shape with a fair amount of muscle from his time in the service. His dark-brown hair is generally kept with a close-shave, and he tries to not let it get too long for the sake of professionalism. Although his hands are somewhat small, his arms and legs are quite long and most of his muscle is centered around his legs and lower body.
Personality:
"If you do not put your squad-members before you, you are not a true leader."-Francisco Afflaen
Many that grew up with Francisco would hardly recognize his Personality after his time in the service. Even though he was always a generous and caring man, the tight-bonds that are formed on a battlefield have certainly made him put the needs of others before his own in nearly every circumstance. In addition, his sense of patriotism and duty to the Republic have also grown, but he has not let that devolve into arrogance. He is still well-aware of the threat the Sith Empire poses to the Republic and acknowledges the Republic's many flaws.
Despite the stress of battle, Francisco has done a good job of maintaining his positive demeanor and is considered a major booster of morale. He has a tendency to never lose hope and fight until the end, which has nearly cost him his life many times over. When under fire, Francisco generally remains calm and collected, and will always attempt to quell any fear or sense of doom in his squad-mates through the use of jokes or simple encouragement.
Because he is from a rather well-off family, he sometimes tends to trivialize or look-down upon less well-off citizens in the Galaxy, but always attempts to judge someone on their character rather than background. Francisco can also be very cynical when he is in a bad mood, and very judgmental to those who are not his close friends or acquaintances. To him people have no reason to turn against the Galactic Republic, and has a hatred for traitors or people sympathetic to the Sith Empire's cause.
If Francisco gets to know you, he is trustworthy and open-minded but he can sometimes be described as "clingy" towards his friends even though he means well. Francisco holds grudges, and will go to great lengths to get what he perceives as justice towards those who he feels have wronged him, although he would never hurt an innocent or other non-combatant unless in self-defense. Francisco can also be very manipulative, changing words or stories around to win people to his "side" in some sort of feud.

Biography:
Birth and Early Life (0-12)
Born to a wealthy family in Curamelle, he had a small family and only had an older sister, Jane, as a sibling. However, by the time Francisco was born, she was already 14, but his mother, Anna, cared for him greatly and spent time with him. Anna had a strained relationship with Marcos, as Jane was not Marcos's child, so Anna felt she knew what was best for her children and that Marcos knew nothing about parenting. His father, Marcos, represented Corulag in the Republic Senate, and as such was gone for long periods of time to Coruscant. Because of this, he grew close to his Mother and rather distant from his Father. Francisco was a very bright child, and learned to read and speak Basic early in his life.
When he entered school, Francisco was always excited and eager to learn. But as the years went on, he became socially awkward and withdrawn. Despite suffering from hardships from his peers, Francisco still managed to learn a great deal and get by without much difficulty. Francisco even managed to make a close group of friends, Yohan, Zain, and George. Francisco realized the social risk they took when choosing to associate with him, so he was always thankful that they chose to take the risk and associate with him. Marcos wanted him to be a Senator, and encouraged his learning in Fine Arts and Languages but Francisco did not enjoy these things and frequently ran to his mother for help in getting out of these classes.
Adolescence and Change (13-18)
As Francisco began to mature, the mocking and joking that his peers forced upon him seemed to disappear and he began to become a better speaker and open up more. His group of friends greatly expanded, and he soon found his own little niche within school society. Francisco had a talent in his later grades to become good friends with teachers and professors, and he used this to his advantage, attempting to gain favors or just learn more things from them than he could in the classroom. It was around this time that his desire to join the Republic Military took root due to the fascinating stories his ex-Pilot Teacher told him.
On the homefront, Anna had managed to convince Marcos that Francisco did not want to become a Senator, but Marcos seemed to look down upon his son for not wanting to follow in his footsteps. Even though it made his life slightly harder, Francisco got by just fine and learned to ignore his fathers ramblings and "life-lessons". However, when he was 14 his father suffered from a heart-attack and was nearly killed.
Because of his father nearly dying, Francisco attempted to get closer to his father just in-case he might his end. Marcos, shocked from his near-death experience decided to let his son pursue his dreams and began to accept him. Francisco was elated to finally have his fathers love and acceptance, and they soon became very close. Even though Anna hated to see her son get closer to his father than her, but seeing Francisco so happy was enough.
Sadly, his father's health only further deteriorated, and at the age of 16 passed away. Francisco was devastated, but he did not let it affect his Education or social life. It did, however, bring him back to being close to his Mother. After hearing how fascinated Francisco was about the Republic Military, she encouraged him to think about joining the services now that his Father was dead.
Even with his stable and successful social life, love evaded Francisco and he never really had any relationships throughout his Teenage years. This did not bother him, as he saw it as less distractions from his schoolwork. At the age of 18, Francisco graduated with a plethora of academic honors, but he did not intend to continue with a civilian career like most of his awards would assume.
Carida Academy (18-20)
After graduation, Francisco quickly enlisted in the Republic Armed Forces, and decided on the Army branch. This meant that he was immediately assigned to the Carida Academy for training, to his mother's sadness. Even though Francisco was sad to leave Corulag, he was excited to travel the Galaxy and was eager to do his best at the Academy.
Upon arrival at the Academy, Francisco quickly began to realize that his career choice was not going to be easy, but he felt it was his duty to give back the Republic which had provided him so much for so long. As such, he attempted to be a model Cadet and always attempted to out-do the other Cadets in nearly everything.
Francisco was well-liked by most of the Instructors, but most of his fellow Cadets found it hard to get along with him due to his seemingly competitive nature towards the Academy. Nevertheless, he still managed to gain a small group of friends who enjoyed doing the best they could at the Academy, and he began to enjoy the Academy.
It was here at the Academy where Francisco got his true sense of Republic patriotism and duty. By the time of graduation, Francisco felt proud to have done so well at the Academy, and felt that his awards in Marksmanship and Academics were well deserved.
Private and Guard Duty (21-23)
Despite his many awards, Francisco entered the Republic Army as a Private, and was assigned to the 3rd Corulag Regiment at Tasjon. Although he was frustrated to be back at Corulag, he knew it made his Mother happy as he was able to see her every now and again when he gained Leave.
Unfortunately for Francisco, this arrangement did not last long as Anna died when he was 22. Although he was devastated, he knew that she would have wanted him to remain focused and vigilant at serving the Republic, and his squad-mates helped him through it. It was his time with the 3rd Corulag Regiment where he first meet his future idol, Captain Meljesh. Meljesh took the time to get to know his squad-mates, and even took Francisco under his wing.
Meljesh was a 65-year old Colonel from Coruscant with a wealth of experience. Regarded as a highly charismatic leader, he had distinguished himself multiple times in conflicts along the frontier putting down local pirates.
Realizing that Francisco had great potential as a squad leader, Meljesh decided to try and teach Francisco what he thought was true leadership. This time with Meljesh would shape Francisco's personality, and Meljesh taught him to always put the needs of your squad-mates before the needs of others. At the age of 23, Francisco was promoted to Corporal and transferred to the 4th Core Guard Regiment at Balmorra. Just as Francisco was getting tired of the lack of action, reports from the Outer Rim began to arrive about a hostile force making rapid gains.
First Combat and Leadership (24-25)
While Francisco was ready to fight the Sith soldiers, he also realized that war was nothing to be excited about, and tried to prepare himself for the threat of his squad-mates dying, or even himself dying. Soon enough, the Regiment was transferred to assist in the Crisis of Ord Trasi and Francisco got his first taste of combat, but to his disappointment, against a band of raiders terrorizing local farmers.
Early on in the conflict, the Regiment was assigned to defend the right flank of the Republic lines. The raider commander had ordered his forces to concentrate on the right flank, but the Regiment refused to give ground and held off the initial Pirate assault. Unfortunately, many of Francisco's squad-mates had paid the ultimate price, including the Regiment commander.
A few hours after the initial assault, the Pirate forces returned and began to make gains against the dis-organized and exhausted Regiment. Realizing that it would be over soon if someone did not take charge, Francisco remembered Meljesh's teachings and began to rally the Regiment under his command and managed to mount an effective defense and retake most of the land the Pirates had seized in the confusion.
Realizing the potential Francisco had as a leader, the General in charge of the conflict promoted Francisco to Lieutenant and the remnants of the Regiment who had survived with Francisco formed the 1st Frontier Regiment.
Due to Republic reinforcements from the Core arriving at Ord Trasi, the new Regiment was transferred to Taris to recoup its loses and reinforce the small garrison based on Taris.

Francisco sighed and climbed out the hard military cot. He couldn't sleep with his awful humidity on Taris, and decided to go get something from the mess hall. Waking down the sterile gray hallways, Francisco could not escape the feeling that something bad was going to happen soon. Judging from how deserted the hallways were, and the current lighting, Francisco estimated that it was the crack of dawn, his usual time of waking up.
This meant that the cook would be up as well, so Francisco could count on some warm food in his stomach. When he rounded the corner to the mess hall, he was not disappointed. A plethora of food greeted him, the scent making his hunger more apparent. Francisco waved to the cook, who returned the gesture. He had hoped to make conversation, but to be honest Francisco preferred to just eat this morning. Grabbing a plate from the counter, Francisco began to hurriedly eat as his gut kept telling him something was going to happen soon.
"Well, if something's going to happen, I might as well be prepared......" Francisco thought, as he finished up and headed back to the Barracks to see if any of his squad-mates had woken up yet.
