Got the idea that it'll probably end up like every other MMO out there. Grinding levels, running from here to there doing this quest and that. Most people only playing to be the better player. Tbh, I think a better idea would have been to make another KOTOR, but have an online feature.

They're adding the whole choice aspect to SWtOR that's in KotOR franchise: www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2taOfIUW2w But also looking at the gameplay they release, especially if you check out the Trooper class vid released a few days ago, it looks a LOT more smoother than the gameplay in either KotOR. However, one of the developers made the interesting point that by making it an MMO, it enables them to make not just KotOR 3 and 4, but can also enable them to make KotOR 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, because they can continue to keep expanding the storyline and universe itself. But again, awesome trailer: www.swtor.com/media/trailers/deceived-cinematic-trailer ;D Just oogle and enjoy, which is all trailers are really meant for. ;D

Maybe, but for a series thats story based making the sequel an MMO has effectively shot themselves in the kneecaps. Honestly I can see it now.
Trooper: U JEDI GIVE BUFF Jedi: Wh...what?.... Trooper: GIVE BUFF, QUEST PARTY Jedi: I don't want any death sticks..... Trooper: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL NOOBLETS

I personally wanted another KotOR. I mean, Revan and the Exile venture off into the unknown so that three hundred years later Sith can invade? No doubt they set back the invasion but there was just so much they could have done with that, seriously, they could have given an online option between a player or two (maybe three for an entire team) but in truth this MMORPG seems somewhat of a cop out from living up to the expectation that was built up by the storytelling three hundred years prior.
They'll probably tie up loose ends in TOR but I highly doubt it'll be as good as it could have been if it had been a KotOR 3. I think they should have saved the MMORPG for after KotOR 3 (or four if they wanted to push it that far).
I'd say the only way to avoid the typical MMORPG chat (with a great example provided by Almsey) would be to just get some friends and set up a little rping group. Personally I've never tried that on a MMORPG, usually I'm just 'playing to be the better player'. I just think there's something a bit abstract about MMORPGs and it doesn't allow you to really 'immerse yourslef' in the game.
I mean, take a game like GTA and the sandbox feel you have of people going about their lives. Much easier to get into unlike MMORPGs where people are running in circles, jumping up and down, waving their arms around and suddenly vanishing during a quest when their internet connection gives way. Plus, I don't like monthy fees and with this game they could charge a fair price for the game and not charge monthly fees because of the number of people that it's attracting.
So... yea.
In other news, I liked the new flashy video, quite good to watch. Although not liking the fact there were only blue and green lightsabers, thought they might have at least thrown in a yellow or two. An insight to the game perhaps? I hope not.

Some of that I agree with, but I think some underestimate what an MMO can bring as far as storyline goes. Such as, Guild Wars, and some of what SWtOR plans to bring to the table immediately reminded me of Guild Wars. Like the NPC buddy(ies) you get along the coarse of your character's journey, that was perfected by Guild Wars in an astounding way. And while it wasn't to the depth a single-player game can bring. Still, you follow along with their personal storylines, and some of them were fairly interesting, and it was impressively cinematic. Guild Wars was the first MMO that ever got me paying attention to its storyline and wanting to engage in it, and even amongst the throngs of other players with your class and/or hybrid build and gear. The storyline it still managed to place you, the individual, as the main person saves the world in the main game and each of its expansions, especially the Eye of the North expansion, I'd never been impressed with MMO plots before - and that one just blew me away.
The major problem most MMOs have as far as storyline goes is they forget to focus on the individual player's involvement in it. For anyone who hasn't played Guild Wars it managed to dispel this problematic aspect that was believe MMOs can't do such a thing. And going over how Bioware intends to enable players to go about exploring and getting involved in their own unique storyline, and then looking back at what PlayNC was able to do with Guild Wars. Personally, I can see it working, especially with Bioware at the helm.
Now while I don't doubt for a second that there'll be the classic "wur r da jedi healz?!1!1!!?" a billion times over. If they make it so grouping is optional rather than required, like Guild Wars did with their NPC groups you could make, which I suspect they might wind up doing given you will have an NPC character or even characters following you around helping your character out. Then that will never be an issue unless you decide to group up with those people.

I just hope they make it like guild wars so I don't have to pay T_T
I think the only thing weird is...there is this mystical Emperor who is the only one to survive after the hyperspace war or watever and then just flies off the outer rim and suddenly makes this councill of 12 sith lords. Apparently hes like 1400, he sacks coruscant and then suddenly decides he doesn't want galactic domination and fades away >.>
Oh and they totally messed with out timeline ~_~
I think they shouldve just turned the game into an epic KOTOR

>.> I suppose then I should resign myself to buffing and/ or healing again *memories echo- druid buff NOAZ* Not to sound like the rabid star wars fangirl I am, but, I'll be playing this simply because it's Star Wars...
It would be nice if they made it like Guild Wars, the only issue I see with that is Guild Wars was really difficult for simple people like myself and yea you could complain but will it go as far as it does for someone playing WoW who's paying every single month to use the game?
All in all though... if I can at all play it, I'll play it even if I end up paying for a few months of gameplay.

I am honestly a ginormous fan of MMOs and I think that this game is gonna turn out great. Their main goal is to make a game NOT like WoW. That's why SWG died. The trailer was also very very epic. I loved it. Part of me wishes the gameplay was exactly like that though.

If the gameplay is like that, I don't believe many of us would ever stop playing. I have seen in game video of fights and they seem rather fluid, I just hope they work some kind of countering system in there as you see in real SW instead of just two people standing next to each other hacking away.
Perhaps they will use forms as well (I hope they do) I can see them making you assign a form that varies with its attack to defend spread and does this automatically while you fight so you don't have to keep clicking, while you do other stuffs like buff and force.

I'll admit the trailer is awesome. However its HIGHLY doubtful that it reflects what the actual gameplay would be like. As was said previous, if it was none of us would stop playing it =p. I mean I've seen other MMORPGs with awesome trailers...but the game play was pretty much the same as the normal boring heal this, buff that. Kill mob blah blah. Gameplay that you get with most modern MMO's these days.
And god help us all if someone finds a way to hack the game to cheat. We'll be seeing a few players running around like Starkiller, bringing star ships crashing down.

lmao The gameplay isn't nearly like that, of course, in fact it's a more upgraded and smoother variation of the KotOR games gameplay themselves. There are a few vids out there already that show its gameplay. Also, this is Bioware we're talking here, too, these guys are in a class of their own when it comes to making games. I have yet to play one bad game by them. But this is why I tell people, don't complain of "what could be" or "it's not how the game will actually play", of course it's not - it's immaterial. Mention to me one game that ever played as smoothly as the action scene in any trailer or cinematic. It can't be done, because such a game doesn't exist, yet. Trailers have and always have had but one purpose, to dazzle and psych people up for the game, that's it. And if any person gets fooled into thinking the game plays good based off of a cinematic trailer, I'll instantly call them a fool. Now, my personal experience with Bioware with their games over the years is they have always managed to deliver a fun game with easy to pick up and play fun gameplay and lots of depth and choice in its storyline. Now they're claiming they can do this with an MMO. Since they haven't disappointed me with their previous single-player titles. Personally, I have no reason to doubt they'll disappoint me with their MMO title, which is based off of a franchise I love. So, I'm giving them benefit of the doubt, especially after seeing how smoothly it plays and how great the graphics look. And the fact they're taking their merry sweet time with it, only makes me smile more, because that only ensures a more polished game. So, though it could wind up being a huge screw up. I just don't have it in me to crap all over a game before I've played, especially when the people making it have managed to consistently turn out great games before, and again the gameplay and graphics they have shown for this title are smooth as silk. Again, I just don't have it me to crap on it, yet, I'm just not that jaded gamer anymore.

You know, I am coming to realize that this game is so highly anticipated largely in part to Bioware's involvement. Their reputation is on the line. They have promised to deliver the ultimate game. If they fail and the game is a bust, their sterling reputation will be ruined. But there is a reason for their Rep, and it is well deserved, so I doubt it. It may not live up to the expectations we have of it, but I highly doubt the game will be a bust.
I am really counting on the whole Storyline aspect though. Hopefully, you can take up arms for the Separatists, thus disabling your ability to work for the Republic. Or they have some kind of Reputation system where you have to build up trust in a faction to get certain missions, and doing missions for opposing factions lowers your trust in the other. Hopefully something along those lines. I just don't want to be able to go around and do missions for everybody.
I am going to be a Sith first anyway so meh, that won't apply to me first.

Most MMOs come with a tag of 15$ a month to play via debit card or you can buy game cards that are around 30$ for around two months. This is only done with WoW but if SWTOR becomes good enough then perhaps theyll do that as well.
But im pretty sure there will be a cost to it. A cost my living in my parents basement 18 yr old ass will def pay for if its good.

Ok first off to answer just about everyone's question about if the jedi will be starting classes yes they will be. If Any of you are true geeks you would have read the article in a gaming magazine about Star wars Old republic LONG before it even was announced at E3. Bio Ware even announced that EVERY and I mean EVERY character will have Different story every time you play. You can even start as a Mandolorian if you wish along with Troopers. They are going to make force powers balanced with Powers that no force users use. So It will most likely be about two years before this game is even near finished. Every character you play will have a different story that you can play Good/bad/evil/neutral. Im sure though you wont be a full jedi when you start out you will just be a padwan or something like that. You may even be a adult just learning the force who knows. You can be just about anything and Just about every planet you know in Star wars will be there that you can travel too. Supposedly you can even have guild or clans w/e take over planets for themselves. Its going to be very interesting as you will never run out of storyline as this is a totally NEW type of MMO. ITS a STORYLINE based MMO which means your actions actually effect the world and other people around you including PLAYERS. Bio ware is going to have to work out some major kinks but I think it could work. That was the sad thing about WOW once you got to 70 or 80 now.. there is nothing to do other then run the same shit over and over again or Run BG's or Raids. It gets really boring after awhile but with this new MMO even if you max your level out you can still effect the world and take over planets and all that jazz. How the economy thing is going to happen that is in the air. There is no word about it but who knows. This is a totally different MMO supposedly its going to be just like Mass Effect in the style of interacting with the world and talking. SO expect major kick ass shit as more is released on it.

this is almost straight from the Game Informer magazine:
--" in modern games, players no longer want to read blocks of text, they want to be immersed in the game worlds the same way they are immersed in movies, tv, ect." to that end, this ambitions MMO features full voice acting for every character in the game.--
--Bioware has unveiled three new classes that appear to be exactly what the fans expect: the military-minded trooper, roguish smuggler, and mercenary bounty hunter. in gameplay terms, the trooper is a heavily armed and armored ranged combatant who comes strapped with big rifles and plenty of grenades. the smuggler also prefers to fight from a distance, but is a more agile, quick whitted fighter who utilizes stealth and misdirection to prevail. Bounty hunters are happy to engage any mark, up to and including jedi. they use the best firepower on the black market, along with and impressive array of tricks and gadgets, to complete their contracts --
they're also unveiling Nal Hutta and Ord Mantell

Ok well in my opinion, this shall be a fun game. Ive played Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, and even SWG, and all fo therm were great in their own ways but all had flaws. Wow by far is my favorite. I played it for 2 years before I stopped a few months ago to save cash. I'll be going back to it soon probably. Guild Wars I didn't like very much, except for making a PVP charecter and having fun there occasionally, though I also liked the no 15$ a month thing. That was the only thing I disliked about WoW. Now with SWG, it was fun, but annoying. I played it when it was terrible so Im not surprised. Now Im kinda looking forward to this new game as Ive played both KOTOR's. Ive beaten both of them over a few dozen times each, on both good and evil, with and without cheats, etc, so Im a huge fan. If its like KOTOR, I'll love it. Anyways Ive always loved WoW, and if they can mix the gameplay they have in that (which is amazing. I also loved to RP on there, as long as it wasn't with newbs) with Guild Wars low fees and some nice little tid-bits in there, it'll be ultimate game. I'm also a SW fan so I'll probably just love it even if it isn't like WoW. Anyways thats all I got to say at the moment, as Im tired and back is sore. Ill be watching this thread carefully now.
