Luke Skywalker: Pansy or just plain awesome?

Luke always strikes me as being very wise by the end of Return of the Jedi, modeling what a true Jedi should accomplish, which is later contrasted by Anakin's fall in Eps I, II, and III. Considering that his formal training was very short, and Luke had to figure out most of it on his own in the films and in between them (in the extended universe materials), I really admire him and am definitely happy with him being the one to save Vader and be the hero. He was kind of emotional during his scenes against Vader and Palpatine, but you have to remember that he was fighting the greatest evil in an entire galaxy, which manipulates your emotions against you. It was hard but Luke still won. So he's not a pansy.

As far as Luke is concerned, I vote awesome. However, I think we (as a fandom) focus too much on Luke as the main character, when the saga is, in fact, the story of Anakin Skywalker.

I have never been a Luke fan. His character just never excited or interested me, but movie speaking, he only beat Vader. He did not beat the two greatest evils, he beat Vader. Palp was zapping the hell out of him and had him dead to rights. He only survived because his daddy did the fighting for him.

Then again, I also do not give Luke full props for beating Vader because, I believe, Vader was not able to tap into the Dark Side to the state he once was able before. I think even at this time doubt was wiggling into his mind over his son, thus was not able to summon the hatred he usually could to other enemies, so I put the whole beating Vader as debatable (And I just love Darth Vader.)

Movie Luke = Pansy.

Now... books, he is not as much of a Pansy. He has his pansy moments with all the self doubt and being pushed around by other Jedi, however, he is new to this and no character should be instantly good at what they do. It takes time to work out the kinks.

He does develop into a good, not nearly as pansy as movie version Jedi during the Vong timeline, but that said, I do not like the Vong timeline.

So Book Luke = Ok. Not awesome, not pansy, but ok.

I also agree he would not be able to hold a candle to the earlier great Sith Lords such as Bane, Revan, Naga Sadow, or Exar Kun (Live one, not the spirit ghost thing.)
