Kvothe didn't do anything but laugh when Alindra pulled him nearer. Two minutes, she said. That was the time he had to impress her. On the one hand, part of Kvothe thought that two minutes didn't really seem like a whole lot of time. But, to the side of Kvothe that was nervous and afraid of messing something up, it seemed to be near an eternity. He'd make do, though, as he had been so far.
He absentmindedly hummed a tune as his mind turned over what options he had. It was an old, soft song--a lullaby from Rilia that his mother used to sing to him when he was a small boy. The words had long since faded from his memory, but the melody remained, ever present somewhere in his consciousness. And now it came out, as it sometimes did when he was absorbed in his thoughts.
"Two minutes," he said when he was done thinking, leaning forward. "Two minutes to impress you. Maybe I'll compare you to a flower, then. Then again, I think that's been done already." His eyes flicked to her rose and went back to settle on to her. "Then I'll tell you a poem I made up the other day. Wow you with my poetic prowess and what not." Kvothe straightened his back and cleared his throat dramatically, suddenly a court bard, with Alindra as his Lady.
"Now, be wary dear Alindra. This piece in particular has been known to make women break down completely. Why, some say its power is so intense that they've fallen into the arms of the man they were with and tell him to whisk them away! Keep your guard up, or you too may fall victim to it." He grinned slyly at her. Then he composed himself once more, resuming the role of the bard preparing to wow his audience. His mouth opened to deliver the first line, when suddenly he paused with a confused look.
His shoulders slumped a bit and the straightness left his back as he shook his head dejectedly. "Ah, my Lady, you'll have to forgive me. It seems poetry is not my forte. You see, I'd intended to spin this great poem from nowhere, and then I realized I ended the last line with 'orange.' I was doomed from the beginning." A rueful smile grew on his face and he spread his hands innocently. "I do try, though."
Of course, the whole thing had been a show from the beginning. When he'd finished his thinking, Kvothe decided he wanted to see if he could make her laugh. Though, being a funnyman was not something the often at least fairly serious Kvothe did often, so he hadn't a clue what effect he might have had. So he held his position and waited to see how Alindra might react.
Not that he had any idea where he might go from here... But then again, he hadn't known that all night.

Kvothe said he would compare Alindra to a flower, then noted he'd already done as much. He said he would dazzle her with a most powerful piece of poetry, but he seemed to fear the word "orange" at the end of it.
Alindra's mouth hung open, unsure what she would say first. "You've left me a bit curious. What sort of poem ends with the word 'orange?'" She was still lost, not knowing what would happen. Her heart was beating harder than it ever had when she was trying to relax. The insecurity of Kvothe's poem left Alindra locked in a torrent of anticipation.
"What is it? You know what I'm like, or at least you have a good idea." Alindra draped her arms around Kvothe's shoulders, coming close to feeling his heat. "Everybody wants something. Tell me, Kvothe, what is it that you want? I want to know." Her lips crept upward. Words crept out of her mouth, softened with the poison of pleasure. "Tell me."

Note to self: leave the jokes to people that are good at them. Kvothe laughed weakly when Alindra asked him what he'd had in mind. The truth was, he didn't have anything in mind. Sure, he could probably pull out some line that ended in 'orange,' maybe even one that made some iota of sense, but that might lead to her asking more of his imaginary poem, which would put him in a bad place. Y'know, since there wasn't a poem.
"There's not a poem," he muttered sheepishly. "It was an attempt at a joke. A bad joke... A bad attempt at a bad joke." Heat, along with a bright red was rushing into his cheeks, along with a deep maroon in his eyes. "I think I'll leave the jokes alone in the future."
Then Alindra moved forward, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and coming to stand very near to him. Again, his breath caught in his throat, if only for a moment. She was so close to him. He could feel the warmth that came from her body, and had no doubt she could feel the same from him. Almost without thinking, he returned the gesture in a different manner, and gently placed his hands on her sides.
Her question gave him pause, though. What did he want? To him, the answer seemed obvious enough. But he wasn't sure if he should just say it. It'd probably be best if he did. Or not. Well, pushing ahead had worked in the lobby, so why not?
"I... I want you." He'd intended that to be spoken strongly, but it came out in a sort of whisper. Kvothe didn't care, though, and kept going. "For most of my life, the only things I've ever had a passion for are the Mythics and combat. But now, there's something else. My heart's yearning for something different, something new." The corners of his mouth turned up just enough to be perceptible. "It's yearning for you, Alindra."

"If I may interrupt for a moment?" The waiter had returned, bearing everything that had been ordered. Alindra let go of Kvothe and stepped toward the waiter. She took one of the bright indigo berries from the tray while the waiter poured wine into both of the glasses.
"Delicious," Alindra said. Then she took one of the glasses and passed it to Kvothe before taking the other for herself. "Thank you," she said to the waiter, subtly dismissing him.
After devouring the rest of the berry she'd been working on, Alindra picked up another and passed the tray to Kvothe. "You should try one of these too. Their wonderful." Her first sip of wine made the taste even fuller, more fragrant. She sighed, letting the slight ecstasy slip down her throat.
"It's funny," she said as she leaned back on the rail, framing the scene of the city behind her. "My allies value passion above all else. The drive to make someone follow their dreams beyond all else--it's a power greater than everything else in the galaxy." Alindra took a longer drink of wine, breathing deeply before taking a small bite of berry, which she washed down with more wine.
"Of course, we have a shared passion now. We both want something that only the other can give. We both want something that only the other can take." Alindra finished her glass and started refilling it. "Dress it up any way you want. Make it civilized, make it impulsive, it all turns out the same."

Kvothe took the glass Alindra offered him and poured some of the wine into it. Then he took one of the berries, and studied it for a few seconds before popping it into his mouth. It was good. Sweet, with just a bit of a tangy aftertaste after it went down. The wine was very good as well, though Kvothe was careful not to drink much of it. It had a very smooth taste, one that made Kvothe yearn to down more of it, but alas he could not. Not so quickly.
His eyebrows lifted when Alindra spoke again and he turned his eyes, which were back to their usual hazel with slight touches of purple, to look at her. He nodded at her first statement, though he found himself wondering who those allies she spoke of were. It was a question for later, perhaps. Passion was good. Passion for knowledge fueled the Mythics. Passion for his order was what fueled him in his duties as a Sword. It wasn't the only thing that fueled Kvothe, though. Hate fueled his feud with his brother. Perhaps that was a passion of a sort. Kvothe didn't think much of it though.
Her next statement caught him a bit off-guard though. He wasn't quite sure how to respond. The wine swirled around in his glass gently as he absentmindedly spun it. He moved forward, to lean against the rail next to Alindra and look out over the city. There was still a bit of a chill to the night air as it stirred, and ruffled his auburn hair. Kvothe was near to Alindra though, and in his mind, he could still feel the warmth of her.
He took a more drawn-out swig of his wine, though he did not drink it all, and pondered what she'd said. He still wasn't sure how to respond. Was she, in saying that they had a shared passion, confirming she felt for him as he did for her? Or was she mentioning something else? Or, was Kvothe thinking too hard? Probably the last. Still, he didn't want to make an idiot of himself again so soon after his botched joke so, at the risk of sounding slow, he decided to step carefully. "Forgive me Alindra, but I'm not quite sure what it is that you're getting at."

"What I mean is that we're the same, Kvothe Algaterra. As long as I've studied the Force--which hasn't been long--I've known that there are things we're all being led to. I was led out into the wilderness, not only to learn to defend myself, but to also see that I can take a much bigger piece of the galaxy. I just thought I was willing to fight back before, but I know so much more now."
Alindra turned to the side, pressing a large curl off her forehead. She smiled and laughed to herself. "When all my ambitions start going at once, I get a little unhinged."
Again, she faced Kvothe. She rolled her eyes, a quiet condemnation of herself for not being as clear with Kvothe. It was hard telling him things she wanted him to know, even if she didn't know what those things really were.
"You know, I've learned three things about myself today. The first is just how much I want to rule something without question or end. I want this kind of view any time I want to see it. I want servants to take care of scoundrels like those fiends from the Exchange.
"I want to show someone else what they're capable of, since I want to go back to Almania, find my sister and put her on the same path I'm on now. She's too special to just be some technician."
She put down her glass and touched Kvothe's arm, gently pulling them closer to each other again. "Of course," she said, "the last thing is one of the best. I know what sort of companion I want." Alindra didn't pull herself toward Kvothe, even though she'd fixed herself on him, if only a little. Alindra had never felt for someone romantically before. Her emotions were flaring, pushing aside the darkness and hate, trying to make something new for herself.

"I think that last one is something we both learned today," said Kvothe, as he moved a bit closer to Alindra. For a moment he considered kissing her again, but he hesitated. Not yet. Instead, he settled with feeling her presence so near to his--a spot of warmth in the ever-chilly night air.
"My goals, my... ambitions are simpler than yours, though." He downed the last of his wine and set the empty glass down. He sighed contentedly as he leaned back onto the rail, still near to Alindra. "I want to do the best I can to serve the Mythics, in whatever way I can. And I want to kill my brother, and I'm willing to go to almost any lengths to do that." Wind tousled his hair again as he shrugged and looked at Alindra again. "Like I said simple. Difficult perhaps, but simple.
"Though, despite the fact that you may have more grand things in mind than me, you're right that we're the same." His gaze swept out to the city, and for a moment, he almost felt as Alindra wished to be, a ruler looking over his domain. "We've been through some difficult things. And they've given us a strength and a resolve that most people don't have." He looked at her again, and waited to see how she might respond.

"I think that might be one of the things I like best about you." Alindra leaned close to Kvothe, close enough that she could have stopped trying to hold herself up and let Kvothe simply hold her. But that wasn't something Alindra wanted, at least not yet.
"I like it that you know exactly what you're after. I can't say that about myself. I know what I want, but I don't really know how to get there. Maybe if I fight someone and take their throne." Alindra shrugged. "Maybe I should just climb on top of the railing and start howling at the moon." She glanced at her wardrobe before adding, "I don't think that would really work with me wearing this outfit."
She glanced at the ledge, wondering if she should do it anyway.

"Ah yes, and I'm sure the workers would have the story of their careers. 'Hey, remember that night that woman climbed up on the rail and started howling like she was some wolf,' one of them would ask. 'Ah, no, I believe that was before my time here, though I've heard the story,' his coworker would answer. 'Pity you couldn't see it yourself then. It was wilder than the stories make it sound.'" He laughed, with an amused shake of his head. "Yes, that'd be quite the sight." He glanced over at Alindra, to see that she was much nearer to him now than she had been before. Near enough that she could probably lean on him if she wished it. Kvothe found himself thinking that he wouldn't mind that. Not in the least. But his mind lingered on something else Alindra said, and he made no mention of it.
"If I may go back for a moment, knowing what it is you want and how to go about it are two different things, y'know? We're both pretty much in the same boat in that regard. You know what you want, I know what I want. You want to rule, I want Vorian brought to justice." Kvothe sighed, taking a moment to turn and fill up his wine glass about halfway before going on again. "I don't have a clue how I'll go about that, though. Vor's a good deal stronger than me, and by rights, should've killed me a number of years ago. But where there's a will there's a way, right?"
Small spots of gold shined through the green of his eyes when he offered Alindra a smile. "If ruling's what you want to do, you'll do it." He paused to take a light sip from his glass. That was something he should probably stop, as he, being one who couldn't hold alcohol very well, was starting to feel that oh-so-familiar buzz starting to grow in his head. "If nothing else, you could probably charm your way up, eh? But don't short sell yourself." Kvothe gave Alindra a meaningful look as his eyes shifted back toward purple. "You're better than that." A blush of color touched Kvothe's cheeks, as he suddenly felt a bit awkward. So he decided it might be best to be quiet for a moment.

"You think I'm better than charming my way into ruling my own dominion?" Alindra asked the question with luring tones, wanting to snare her companion's very thoughts away from him. "Since I'm not howling on balcony railings--at least not yet--then you just have to tell me why you think I'm so much better than just charming my way."
She looked up to Kvothe's eyes as she spoke. There were no notes for her to follow. She was simply curious, hungry to learn more about him. No great ambition drove her. All Alindra wanted was to taste more of Kvothe, feel more of who he was, to know his limits and his passions.

"Perhaps I phrased it poorly," said Kvothe with a light chuckle. "What I meant was that, if nothing else, you could charm your way up into your rulership. I mean, you're, pretty, intelligent, clever, you can certainly be ruthless." He looked at her, remembering when he'd first saw her earlier in the day. At the time, other than her Mythos-sensitivity, he hadn't thought her to be more than any other person. But she was. She was so much more than that.
"What I meant is, whatever you decide to do to take you to your goal, don't short shell yourself. Everyone else sese Alindra the dancing girl, right? Or Alindra the slave." A smile touched his lips as he shifted his weight; a move that brought him closer to her, if only just barely. "But there's more to you than that. I know it; I found it out for myself today. You're all of those things that I said you were earlier, and more." One of Kvothe's hands went forward, to gingerly come to stop on top of hers. "I think the only thing you have to do is show anyone who thinks otherwise how wrong they are."

It was Alindra who wasn't articulating what she wanted. She wanted to push at Kvothe's emotions, push him to a point where he couldn't stand to just be next to her anymore. If she'd had a normal life, she might have simply dangled onto Kvothe's side, playing a doting, almost docile role. While she could play that, Alindra wasn't about to, especially since it would likely not appeal to Kvothe in the least.
"You're right. I probably could do that." Alindra's hands started to move along Kvothe's arms, then over his shoulders and down his spine. Her eyes never left his, though she envied the ease of his color changes. "I could find some eligible noble and let them get drawn in, make him feel good about himself. You're right, I could charm someone into giving me a kingdom and a good one at that."
A small part of Alindra's soul started beating herself up. Here was the first guy she'd ever had the hots for, the first she'd ever kissed without a duplicitous reason, and she was bragging how she could land some other guy. Of course, if she didn't, there would be no way to provoke Kvothe into feeling the slightest bit more possessive about her.
"I'm curious about something," Alindra said. She scooped up another berry and popped it in her mouth, washing it down a moment later with half a glass of wine. "Can I get you to chase after me?"
Alindra backed against the railing and looked over, getting an idea of where everything fell around her. She pushed herself up, sitting on the edge of the railing. Her legs dangled toward the floor while her hands kept her balanced in her new seat. Putting on her lust-filled smile, she looked at Kvothe while wondering if or when she should jump.

Kvothe tensed for the briefest instant when Alindra first touched him, merely from not expecting it; though really, by this point, things like that shouldn't have caught him off guard. It was all so new to him that he couldn't help himself sometimes, though. The tension faded away almost as soon as it came, and he looked at Alindra as she spoke, holding his attention captive with her eyes.
Part of Kvothe--no doubt a part of the side of him that was coming out tonight, the side that wanted to love--felt.... something as she talked about the way she could, in fact, go after some young noble and charm him into giving her a kingdom. A good kingdom, at that. His brow furrowed slightly as the realization dawned on him that what he was feeling was the slightest touch of jealousy of all things. The emotion was not even close to extreme--rather, it was really just on the edge of being noticeable-- as the young noble in question was imaginary, but the fact that he even felt it told Kvothe volumes about how he felt for Alindra.
He wanted her. That was something he already knew, but he realized that he didn't want anyone else to have her. But, as she'd said downstairs, he'd have to prove to her that he was something worth keeping.
Alindra spoke again before Kvothe could say anything. She turned around, and regretfully, her hands left his body as she lifted herself up to sit on the edge of the railing. The railing that led to the drop to the ground down below. He took a step forward with a worried hand out stretched out toward her. But when she gave him that smile, that oh-so inviting smile and he turned over the question she posed him a moment earlier in his mind, he finally got what she was getting at.
"Just call my name," he said wryly, taking a moment to set his glass down. Then he grinned at her, and with a step came to stand near her. Very near to her. He placed his hands on the rail, one to each side of her hips, and leaned in just a hair closer. "Call me, and I'll chase after you like no one's ever chased you before. Though, you should know," he said, as his smile took on a similar note to the one she gave him, "if you call me and I chase you, I intend to catch you."

Her eyes hungrily watched Kvothe approach, his hands taking the rail close to her hips. Her ears devoured his words as he barely leaned closer. She had but to call his name and he would follow, willing to catch her, to pursue her, to do whatever it took to have her.
Still Alindra put on a show, pretending to be innocent. Her smile, though genuine was simply to lure, to keep Kvothe close and wanting more. How is this going to end? Alindra asked herself. Nowhere in her dreams did she know just what it was she was doing. There was something truly new and primal in her actions.
Bracing her feet, Alindra let her head lean up and forward, closing the distance only a little. Even though they had kissed already, Alindra wanted it to be more, to feel more. Not just excitement or ecstasy, but something even beyond that. She wanted to feel how much Kvothe wanted it too.
In her wanting, she whispered, saying exactly what she knew they both wanted to hear. "Chase me, Kvothe Algaterra. Chase me as far as you can or as close as you can catch me. Chase me, Kvothe, and I'll only be yours."
Even Alindra was surprised by what she had said. Never had she said something like what had escaped her lips. There was something in her wanting. The needs of her heart, the passions stored there, it was all overflowing who she was, bringing her closer to this man, so maybe she could have him.
It was not a familiar feeling for a practitioner of the Dark Side.

Silence hung around the pair. Kvothe looked into Alindra's sea green eyes, as his own shifted to a dark purple. She'd called his name. Now there was nothing he could do but chase after her. He made a noise, a sort of half-laugh as his smile deepened, and then he moved.
Kvothe leaned in gently, closing what little distance remained between her face and his, and took Alindra with another kiss. It was different than the ones they'd shared before, though; those had been nice, certainly, but Kvothe wanted to make this one something different. Something greater. And so, as his eyes closed, he put everything he had into it, as if he were trying with all that he had to let Alindra know how he felt with the touch of their lips. He put his passions into. He put his love into it. While this was going on, his hands left the rail and moved up, to take Alindra in an embrace. It was strong, because Kvothe was strong, but at the same time, it was tender, and gentle.
Time seemed to stand still, and so Kvothe couldn't say for sure how long it lasted. But eventually, he pulled away just enough to come out of the kiss, and let his eyes open to take in the woman he knew he longed so much for. His heart was pounding within his chest, but not from fear or nervousness; it was beating for her. "As you say, Alindra," he said softly, letting his hands fall back down to rest gently on the rail. "You've called me, and I'll chase after you.

So much had flowed out fo Kvothe as he kissed Alindra; she could feel every drop of it. Beyond passion or even hope, Alindra got exactly what she'd wanted. It was enough to make her heart race. Alindra closed her eyes as she took in the gentle sensation of being with Kvothe. There was something else in their kiss, a feeling lacking from most of Alindra's life.
As they kissed, Alindra felt calm and peace. Nothing could break her of knowing that something in her life was finally going right. She eagerly returned Kvothe's kiss knowing that they not only felt the same things, but were finally giving in to those feelings. It wasn't even a quest for passion, but a slow, careful embrace of a newborn love.
After forever, their lips parted and they could go back to breathing normally again. As Alindra opened her eyes and dared to look at Kvothe, she started to sense that she wasn't alone. Even though he dared to let go of her, Kvothe reassured Alindra, telling her that she'd called to him, so he had to chase her.
Alindra took her place then, standing at Kvothe's side. For a few hours she didn't want to be the person she'd been. She only wanted to be with Kvothe. Her hand reached out and touched his, only enough to overlap their pinky fingers. "I can't believe I'm about to say this." Alindra's voice was calm and gentle. There was a slight weight to it, a kind sincerity she hadn't ever used. "I need you, Kvothe."

As Kvothe moved back enough to allow Alindra to get down off of the rail, he knew he'd found something good. In their budding love there was something he'd never had before; something he liked, something he wanted to get to know better. And he knew, as he set his hands back on the rail with a passionate look at Alindra, that it was something neither his brother or the Unum--both of which had caused him so much pain throughout his life--could take away.
He found himself smiling when he felt her hand touching his and turned to look at her. Right now, he really didn't want anything else but to spend some more time with her. All of his other worries, or the worries that shaped the world around them, could be put on hold, if only for a few hours. Here was a welcome bubble of serenity in an often chaotic world; one that Kvothe didn't want to leave.
Kvothe's attention returned to Alindra when she spoke. Her words floored him. Or rather, there were such that, for the life of him, he didn't know how to respond. She needed him, she'd said. His heart soared at the statement, but his mouth floundered, struggling to think of a way to convey how he felt about it. "I... I, uh..." How could he respond to that? The wine certainly wasn't helping, either.
"I'm... not really sure what to say, to be honest." He laughed almost helplessly, and moved his hand to take hers. If a look could convey what it was that he felt, then the look that Kvothe gave Alindra would have certainly done so, where his ability to form words failed him.
"But I can say," he said after a short silence, "that if you need me, I'm yours."

"I need you, Kvothe." Alindra said the words, looking up to his eyes as she spoke.
Her heart started beating in her chest, beating a tune of sadness and safety and love. "I crave you. All of you. Down to the smallest touch."
The simplest touch of Alindra's fingers came to rest on Kvothe's chest, feeling the fabric of his vest. "I want you--to be near you and feel you."
Then her head rested on Kvothe's chest. She kept it against him, feeling just how much his heart was beating with hers. "I have to have you," Alindra whispered. "Some way, somehow."

Kvothe wrapped his arms around Alindra again when she leaned in on him, taking her once more in a warm embrace. His chin brushed through some of her hair when he sighed wistfully, allowing his eyes to close for a moment before looking down at her.
"Well, Alindra, you can have me, because I want you just as much as you want me," he said softly, almost in a whisper. Each inhalation brought the scent of her perfume into his nose; underneath the fragrance, he could smell her scent, and each breath made him want more of her. One of his hands left her back, and went up, gently brushing against one of the loose curls of hair that hung near her face. "But how might you choose to take me?"

Must I do it all myself? Alindra had never played the game of love before. She didn't know its rules, nor did she know that the search for those rules was foolish and never-ending. Alindra was left to wonder and feel lost.
But she was tired of wondering, of feeling lost. She stood tall and pulled on Kvothe with one hand, grabbing the wine and glasses with the other. "Grab the berries," Alindra said. "There's no telling what we might be able to do with them."
Her expression had become wild and more than a little lewd. As they traveled to their destination, Alindra made a point not to back away from what she wanted. All she wanted was to kiss Kvothe once more before they went into her room. So she did just that, filling they mouths with passion and desire, wanting whatever the future might hold for them.
