Appearance Face Claim • Paul Craddock Height & Weight • 6'1" 145 lbs Overall Looks • Karn is tall and lithe, and doesn't seem to have fully grown into his body yet. He posseses more strength than his slender frame would suggest, and what muscle mass his figure holds is solid and well defined. Karn's eyes are pure white, as is normal for an Arkanian. His skin is pale and prone to burning, rather than tanning. His hair, kept cut at a moderate length, is a pale blonde that appears nearly white in most light. Depending on his mood, he carries himself in fashions ranging from angry plodding to a newly-gained, dangerous grace. Karn tends to dress well, preferring light colors to the drab dark common among his Sith peers. He eschews traditional robes when at all possible, in favor of sleeker options. A subtle scar runs from under his left arm to the edge of his stomach. His newest scar, earned from an expedition to Khar Delba, is a horizontal lightsaber burn across the middle of his chest. He often wears an earring stud in his right ear. Personality Profile Karn is arrogant to a fault. In this, he echoes the values of his parents, and - to a degree - his people; he believes his Arkanian blood elevates him above his peers, and in some ways, his superiors. He has a sharp tongue, and has only just begun to learn when and when not to use it. Respect, especially to his peers, is something that Karn never simply gives; it must be earned, and often with great difficulty. He has been raised to believe that he must project an image of strength at all times. Time among the Sith has only entrenched this attitude in the young man. He can be, when pressed or when he feels he has no other choice, incredibly stubborn - for better or worse. For those who earn his respect, or forge a rare friendship with him, Karn can be incredibly loyal, even at risk to himself. To those who earn his enmity, he can be a dogged, stubborn foe, capable of carrying grudges far beyond the point of reason. But for the front he shows others, Karn is deeply conflicted within. After losing his master in the Battle of Nar Shaddaa against the Archeri Chorus, it's not uncommon for him, in lonely moments, to question his own strength, bravery or worth. The taste of battle has shattered a number of notions he holds, about himself and the Galaxy at large, and he's not yet sure whether he can put them back together. Karn has always been prone to rapid and intense mood swings, and losing his master made them worse. He's passionate, in all things, and has a way of letting his emotions rule him. If pressed properly, he can change abruptly form affably aloof to raging and screaming in the blink of an eye. In conflict, Karn tends to operate in two modes. He prefers, whenever possible, to press the attack; he is aggressive by nature, and this carries over in force to his fighting styles. Whenever he can, he will attempt to overwhelm an opponent with overwhelming force, and very much leans into the 'offense as a best defense' philosophy. However, in some cases - particularly in spars - Karn has a tendency to toy with his opponents if he believes he holds an obvious upper hand. Karn is cruel, and takes of pleasure in causing pain as a means of showcasing his superiority. He will choose, at times, to hurt his opponents and drag out a confrontation, instead of otherwise ending it, and holds absolutely no qualms about using underhanded or dishonorable tactics. In instances where this backfires, or when he finds himself caught off guard, or his fortunes suddenly change for the worse, Karn can be prone to panic. His father, Volo, was a geneticist of growing renown on Arkania, and his mother a famed biologist. He was not their first attempt at a child, but he was — as they’d later tell him — their best. The two personified the ideals of Arkanian excellence, and to them, Karn was perfection. His early years were comfortable. The family was moderately wealthy, provided him with excellent early education and ensured he never wanted for anything. Troubles on the Outer Rim — rumors of the Sith Empire reborn — did not trouble them; the lesser species could do as they wish. All was calm on Arkania, deep in Republic space. Besides, as the Albrechts saw it, the Sith, with their ruthless ways and constant search for total superiority, might not be so bad as a replacement for the bloated, stagnant Republic. Karn was young when his latent Force potential was discovered. The Jedi came and asked his parents to whisk him away to Coruscant, where he’d learn the ways of the Force. Become a guardian of the peace. Learn ancient histories and see the Galaxy. His parents flatly refused. That their son, their perfect boy, was Force-sensitive was a blessing beyond even their wildest hopes. The Jedi wouldn’t take him away and soften him with their teachings. And so the Jedi left. Karn’s life continued apace until as he approached his teenage years. His parents ensured he had the best instructors, and he took hungrily to his learning. They even found a tutor who could offer him some rudimentary lessons in using his Force talents. Still, the tutor — a wayward shaman with little talent more than a proper master — could teach Karn little beyond how to touch the Force. It wasn’t long before the young Arkanian — who’d taken his parents’ praise and claims of perfection to heart — soon grew dissatisfied and demanded his tutor’s dismissal. His parents were all too willing to comply, and so his tutor was sent away from their home into the cold Arakanian winter without remorse They cared little for what happened to him after; he was, after all, just a lowly human. As Karn neared his thirteenth birthday, as the Sith ravaged the Galactic North in an onslaught against the Republic, Volo stumbled upon an intriguing opportunity. A Sith Lord, recruiting for the fledgling Sith Order, requested Volo’s services for a project, and in doing so, learned of Karn’s Force sensitivity. The Sith, he said, could take Karn and mold him into something greater by far than even his parents’ lofty expectations. That his parents had already taught him to embrace his superiority in all matters was a strength, not a weakness, as the Jedi might see it. In leaving, Karn would not be forced to cut contact with his parents. They agreed. Karn, who was at this point fully convinced of his own greatness and eager to push the limits, agreed. And so he was taken away, to Korriban. The early days with the Sith Order were rough. For all his intelligence, Karn knew little of fighting, and his command of the Force was lacking, compared to some of his peers. His rough tongue and — as he quickly learned — often unwelcome takes on his Arkanian superiority often saw him on the wrong side of ass-kickings his instructors were all too happy to let stretch on longer than they should have. As those hard days dragged into weeks, then months, Karn grew ever more angry, at himself for his failures, at the Order for lying to him, and at anyone he was too weak to properly challenge. One day, the damn broke and he touched the Dark Side for the first time. A Sephi he’d once called ‘blade-ears’ who’d never forgiven the slight was beating him soundly in a ‘spar’ that had turned to something more akin to a sanctioned beating when Karn snapped. Lances of lightning erupted from his fingertips, stunning his Sephi nemesis and driving him to his knees. Karn, tired of being beaten and bloodied, fell on his dazed foe with flying fists until crimson blood pooled on the desert sands and the instructor physically pulled him from atop his opponent. It was there, looking down at the Sephi he’d beaten within an inch of death with his own two hands, that Karn saw again the potential for his own greatness. This time, he was not alone. A Mirialan Sith Lady watched, unnoticed from the far side of the training grounds. Two days later, she approached Karn and offered to take him under her wing. She was Lady Colubus. She said he had potential, but needed direction. She warned that her tutelage would not be easy, but as pressures shape a diamond, so too would she shape him until he was strong enough that no one could look down on him. Karn accepted eagerly. Colubus’ training was hard, but she kept her word. Karn was a voracious learner and his master quickly earned his respect, even for being a Mirialan. She taught him to harness the Force, to focus the passions that roiled like storms within him, and turn them into strength. She taught him to use a lightsaber, and once he’d gotten down the basics of Shii-Cho, she advanced his training to Juyo, noting the aggressive form fit his personality. The war against the Republic dragged on. Karn was too young, too unprepared, to see any major action, but he joined Colubus for a mission or two away from the front lines. By the time he was coming more fully into himself, the war ended in a peace treaty between the Republic and Empire. He built a lightsaber — a long-hilted weapon with a crimson blade--and continued to forge a path for himself under Colubus’ steady eye. Everything seemed to be going well. She even said he might be raised to Knight before long, as his nineteenth year turned to 20. And then the Archeri came. Colubus and Karn, no matter their distaste for the agreement with the Republic, rushed to Nar Shaddaa to fight against the Chorus. Neither of them was truly prepared for what awaited on the Smuggler’s Moon. For all Karn thought he knew--for as prepared as he thought he was for war, the roar of battle disoriented him quickly. Colubus, leading a small unit of Sith troopers on a doomed attack against an Archeri stronghold on Nar Shaddaa, died in the fighting, and Karn found himself in command of soldiers he’d never expected to lead. It was a catastrophe. Karn’s unit was overwhelmed by the Archeri onslaught. Every man under his watch died, and he, bloody and battered, thought he was sure to follow until a Republic unit, led by a Jedi Master, rescued him. With the battle against the Archeri over, Karn returned to Dromund Kaas, where he was then transferred back to Korriban to await a new master. With a fresh taste of the Galaxy’s horrors, he’s found himself at a crossroads, unsure if everything he’s thought of himself is a lie. |
